With each passing day, the disastrous conditions in Zimbabwe grow more severe.
Police arrested nearly 10,000 street vendors this week in a crack down on street trading, the livelihood of thousands of its citizens...
Paramilitary units armed with batons, riot shields and tear gas patrolled main roads in Harare Monday as police warned they would not tolerate protests against their crackdown on street trading - the only livelihood for thousands of poor township dwellers.
Police Chief Superintendent Oliver Mandipaka said 9,653 people were arrested in the five-day blitz on street vendors, flea market stalls and other informal businesses.
He said people were preparing to demonstrate but that police were ready and commuter minibuses were prevented from entering the city centre.
Angry demonstrators clashed with police over the weekend in the most serious unrest since President Robert Mugabe's ruling ZANU-PF won a landslide victory in March 31 parliamentary general election, widely condemned by Western governments for alleged rigging and intimidation. Mugabe, 81, has been in power since independence in 1980.

The clampdown has elicited retaliation from some traders, who fought running battles with police.
Law enforcement officers found themselves on the receiving end of a barrage of stones when the residents of Chitungwiza, a satellite town 35km from Harare, resisted attempts to demolish their informal 'tuck-shops' at the weekend.
Otto Saki, a project officer with Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) said it was unfortunate that the police had allegedly used strong-arm tactics to tackle small-scale traders, and ZLHR had met with representatives of the street traders to help them challenge the police action in court.
The leader of the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change, Morgan Tsvangirai, alleged that the clampdown on vendors was the ruling party's retribution for the opposition having maintained its control of urban areas in the 31 March parliamentary elections.
"It is unfortunate that a government that claims to have been legitimately elected by the people can descend on its own citizens with such brutal force - it does not make sense to shut down the informal industry, because that is the main form of trade left in the country: the economy has been mauled," Tsvangirai told IRIN News.

Those who took over the farms had no specialist knowledge - and most farmland now lies uncultivated. The machinery has been stolen, buildings have been plundered and the former workers are starving.

The UN is sending a delegation to the country to assess the food supply situation:
A special United Nations envoy is to visit Zimbabwe this week to assess the country's critical food situation.
It is not clear what reception James Morris, director of the World Food Programme (WFP), will get from the Zimbabwean president, Robert Mugabe, who curtailed UN food distribution last year.
Mr Mugabe said last week that he would accept UN food aid, so long as it came with no political conditions.

I ASK for your divine intervention in Zimbabwe. I have come to understand that we Zimbabweans lack the righteous capacity to unshackle the chains of bondage we now find ourselves in.
My Lord the churches in Zimbabwe remain divided deliberately or otherwise. The only man of the cloth worth mentioning in Zimbabwe is Pius Ncube (pictured at left of this page in the side bar dressed in purple carrying the cross) who remains focused. I pray that you give us more Pius Ncubes and arm them with your hand of supremacy to deliver THY KINGDOM. In case you have forgotten us, more than a quarter of us Zimbabweans live in the Diaspora where we suffer trauma due to lack of identity and decadence of social fabric.
Zimbabweans remain among the most educated on the land, most courageous, most resourceful, most skilful yet most oppressed.
Our problem, my Lord, remains shameful, that those who first cross the line of power immediately close the doors behind them. In unwittingly closing the doors, they close the doors to the voice of reason.
Finally, my Lord, I beg you to use your powers to descend on Zimbabwe and curse the tyranny. Zimbabwe remains our only Promised Land generation after generation, unfortunately Mugabe sees himself as all generations wrapped into one. How on earth can this be allowed. I offer myself, body and soul, to be used by the Holly Spirit to deliver salvation to the people of Zimbabwe, through you my Lord can this be done.
So, is this a single prayer of a single man?
Or, is this the cry of a nation?

Every dollar of aid, every scrap of food relief only maintains Mugabe in power. It's harsh, but the international community should refuse any aid, in any form, to Zombabwe until Mugabe and his cronies either leave power or are dealt with as Mussolini was.

Very sad, but predictable.
I think those whites would have to be crazy to consider returning, even with a new regime in power. A new regime will become confiscatory sooner or later as well, because apparently the whites were the only ones capable of maintaining productive enterprise, and thus will be the only source of wealth for those in power to confiscate. Until an African country develops a real, solid tradition of rule of law and inviolable property rights protected by an uncorrupt government, no one will be able to create productive enterprises there. It would be a waste of time to try. As the previous poster said, it's "Atlas Shrugged" in real life.

Just something to consider. According to some experts, 80% of the known natural resources on the planet are in southern Africa. The Chinese are currently making inroads in Zimbabwe. Mugabe will eventually be replaced. Who will ultimately control the wealth in that nation? Is there something the west can do about that? Is there something the west should do about that?
Oh, and by the way, that "white minority" believed that blacks have no souls. That message was preached in white churches as little as six years ago. Do all of you support that teaching as well?

Frankly, I think you know that every bit as well as I do, so I'm not giving you a pass: you have sullied the dialog, and I think you did so deliberately because you have nothing substantive to say to defend Mugabe.

So I gather your solution is an invasion and forced removal of Mugabe?
Generally we have, with the possible exceptions of Somalia, Haiti, Serbia and Kosovo, refrained from going into sovereign nations because of the abuse of the population or poor government unless that nation has been deemed to pose a threat to other countries or populations outside their borders.
Or is your suggestion that we provide aid directly to the population regardless of the government? How do we do that exactly?
It seems like North Korea could be on your list, too, along with a raft of other despotic regimes in which the population is paying the price ... a "humanitarian invasion" policy? Who decides which countries to go after and on what basis?
I'm at a loss to figure out your concluding paragraph. Are you implying that the "white minority" got was they deserved because of some odd religious beliefs presumably held by a small minority?

"Clusterfuck" doesn't even begin to describe this situation. Zimbabwe is going kablooie even sooner than I expected, because Mugabe doesn't have clue 1 about how to even run a dictatorship, much less a functioning country.
At least Saddam had some idea how to sustain at least a minimal level of economic function.
I have been to Zimbabwe. I have seen how the people are starving. I have seen their living conditions. In no way am I giving Mugabe a pass. I have seen the brutality of his regime. If I were defending Mugabe, why would I be suggesting forced removal? That doesn't make sense.
The human rights abuses are real in Zimbabwe. The starvation with the complications from Aids will kill millions if something is not done. People in the west don't really know what is going on there because there is no freedom of the press there.
Let me ask another question. If starvation is caused intentionally, is that better or worse than using weapons of mass destruction against your own people?
Oh, and by the way, I, like you, Eagle1, would like to believe that only a minority of whites believed that blacks didn't have souls. That would make me feel better. Unfortunately, according to people on the ground in Zimbabwe that is not the case.
Let's face it. The colonial system that was in place in Zimbabwe did a good job of feeding the people and developing the country. However, it was racist. Unfortunately, the Marxists who replaced them now have created a situation where there is no food, and are more racist, while being infinitely more abusive and brutal to their own people.
It is easy to sit in the USA, where one of our largest health problems is caused by large amounts of inexpensive food, and between burps proclaim that the Zimbabweans should just starve, to make a political point.
Does anyone care about the people of Zimbabwe who just want to be able to feed their children? Does that not bother anyone? Glib comments from people who don't really understand the complexity of the situation there really don't add much to the discussion.
So what is to be done?
The case for military intervention is very weak.
Saddam not only brutalized his people, he also made war on his neighbors, used WMDs, supported and encouraged international terrorism and (critically) repeatedly violated the cease-fire that ended the shooting of the first Gulf War.
Milosovic brutalized his people and started a civil war, which was enough for the Europeans to back military intervention, but Zimbabwe has presented us with a lesser case than Yugoslavia.
Mugabe has not invaded his neighbors, or instigated a full-scale civil war (yet) nor has he used WMDs or been shown to be a state sponsor of international terror. Most of the chaos in Zimbabwe seems to have been brought about by incompetence and corruption, not outright mass-murder/ethnic cleansing as practiced by the radical Serbs.
If we are to lower the bar for intervention to include incompetence and corruption, we will basically have to re-colonize the entire "third world" (are you listening Chavez?)
There is little or nothing that outsiders can do to truly fix the situation in Zimbabwe. The people of Zimbabwe are going to have to muddle through and figure it out for themselves. It would be crazy for whites to go back there and try to make a go of it; there is too much corruption and violence. Zimbabweans have to work through this, through revolution and a restructuring of society, probably along a more primative, tribal model. However they were surviving before whites came along is probably what they need to revert to, since they don't seem capable of maintaining a western-style modern society. (None of the black-run nations in Africa do.)
If the west tries to intervene, we will only get involved in an endless quagmire like Somalia. If we give food aid, the natives will become dependent on our food aid. We can't very well go in and run their industries and farms for them. If we oust Mugabe and put in a new government, the new government will be dependent on the west for money and arms. The people of that country have to work out their own salvation according to their own customs and traditions and their own unique way of life. Outsiders can't figure it out for them, and our advice is not likely to be a good fit for their society. It's a hard thing that they are going through this period of famine, but if anyone other than themselves resolves this situation, the solution will be artificial and temporary and as soon as we leave (as we will have to eventually) they will have to work through their issues on their own anyway.
You all make good points which only exemplify the fact that the situation in Zimbabwe is more complex than most people realize.
Frankly, I am not a great fan of "nation building" but it seems that many Americans have changed their position on that topic in the past couple of years.
Beyond the human rights issues and the environmental issues, people also need to understand that there are tremendous natural resources that someone will control in the future. Would be of benefit to the United States if a democratically elected government that is friendly to us were in control of those resources?
Under any type of democratic government that is ruled by law, Zimbabwe could raise enough crops not only to feed themselves, but the entire continent of Africa. Would that be of benefit to us?
In one sense, I believe the situation in Zimbabwe is similar to that in Iran, in that there are a substantial number of people who would welcome some assistance in overthrowing an oppressive regime.
I would take the position that Zimbabwe is not just some little third world country that has no effect on us. There is a reason why it was referred to as the jewel of Africa. It could be a jewel once again with the right leadership. That could reflect well on the west.
The only fix for Zimbabwe is South Africa. Mbeki could step in with diplomatic measures that would force Mugabe's hand...but Mbeki won't.
Because Mbeki is a Marxist too, and democracy DOES NOT EXIST in Africa!

Well. I've spent a lot of time in Zim and my experience is that the races worked better together there than in any place I've been to including the US and Australia and South Africa. Previously, I thought Zim was like South Africa but it was much better and there was real progress after 1980 too. It was when Mugabe changed his ideas and started blaming whites that things went downhill fast. Black businessmen were operating sucessfully in the 90s. I was connected to an operation that employed substantial numbers of Blacks and they were not up to first world standars overall but some were and in a generation or two Zim could have been huge sucess. The educationn system produced bascialy literate English speaking workers. White people who had grown up under the old dispensation repeatedly said to tme that while they could never felt entirely comfortable around blacks they alowed thier children to socialse with Blacks. That is a much more important commitment than merely not using certain racist words...its betting your children's future on a multiracial society.
