Palestinian officials struggle to gain control over the chaos in Gaza.

After massive celebrating, looting, drownings, torchings, shootings, and beatings, Palestinian forces are struggling today to bring order to the Gaza Strip.
Palestinian police Tuesday blocked off abandoned Jewish settlements and chased after scavengers in a first attempt to impose order after chaotic celebrations of Israel's pullout from Gaza. The overwhelmed forces were unable to halt looting of the area's prized greenhouses.Looters scavenged for anything of value left by the Israelis.
The chaos raised new questions about the ability of Palestinian forces to impose order in Gaza. (Hmm.)
The greenhouses, left behind by Israel as part of a deal brokered by international mediators, are a centerpiece of Palestinian plans for rebuilding Gaza after 38 years of Israeli occupation. The Palestinian Authority hopes the high-tech greenhouses will provide jobs and export income for Gaza's shattered economy.
During a tour of Neve Dekalim, Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia implored Palestinians to leave the structures intact, even as people scavenged through debris elsewhere in the settlement.
"These greenhouses are for the Palestinian people," he said. "We don't want anyone to touch or harm anything that can be useful for our people."
Just minutes away, crowds of looters in the Gadid settlement overwhelmed hundreds of guards trying to protect the greenhouses. Guards acknowledged that in many cases, they were unable to stop the looting.
He said about 80 percent of the greenhouses were still intact, but looters walked off with lighting fixtures, cables and wires. Many were undeterred by the police presence. Police said one man dropped his loot only after he was beaten by security forces.
Israel withdrew the last of its troops from Gaza early Monday, handing control of the coastal strip to the Palestinians. Celebrations frequently spun out of control, with Palestinians setting fire to debris and the few remaining buildings in empty settlements, and thousands of people rushing back and forth across the Egyptian border.

Deadly and chaotic scenes ensued as Palestinians took over the Gaza Strip for the first time, yesterday:
"It is time for our people to rejoice and to put an end to the tragedies, sadness and suffering," Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas said as he toured the ruins of the former settlement of Dugit in the north of the territory.Little Green Footballs had more on the Gaza "celebrations", yesterday.
"We have made the first steps on the road to realising our aspirations and we must continue with our journey," he added.
The day was tinged with tragedy, however, as five Palestinians drowned in once-forbidden seas off Gaza while another was killed on the border with Egypt.
Smoke spewed into the air from burning rubbish in former settlements as enormous national flags fluttered from telegraph poles while mobs of youths poured in, ransacking, looting and torching synagogues and other buildings.
The green banner of Islamic militant group Hamas, which has declared the pullout a victory for its five-year campaign of violence, was hoisted above a ransacked synagogue in Neve Dekalim, once the largest Gaza settlements.
One Palestinian was shot dead as he approached a security fence while dozens of youngsters entered no-man's land on the Egyptian side after toppling the barbed wire fence on top of a concrete wall that marks the frontier.
Egyptian authorities, denied responsibility for the shooting.

So what was stopping them from building their own greenhouses?
It was the crowd of people that were rushing to destroy the greenhouses and other buildings and infrastructure left by the Israelis.
Y'know, it's said that the Muslim world gave us science and mathematics. I think it's only fair that we should lend it back to them for awhile.
"Lend it back to them?" Have we been hiding it?
Actually, it was the Arab world that gave us Science and Mathematics, NOT the Muslim world. That is, Sci & Math pre-date Islam.

As to science, a grossly disportionate number of Nobel Prize winners in mathematics and science are Jewish, something like 25%. Muslim Nobel Prize winners are scarcer then hen's teeth but we aren't supposed to notice that.
Err, it wasn't the Arabs, it was the Ottoman Turks (read Greeks) that preserved and advanced the knowledge of the ancient Greeks that would otherwise have been lost in the fall of Rome.

As much as I admire and support Condi Rice and her future campaign for the Presidency, I am disappointed in the lack of criticism from State about the wanton destruction in Gaza. Especially in regards to the torching of the two synagogues.
However, this doesn't surprise me, and it probably doesn't surprise Rice. Gaza is a Hamas stronghold. Arafat's Fatah organization lost alot of influence here to the more ultramontaine Hamas movement.
Of course, once the Israelis have quit Gaza and most of the West Bank, Palestine will descend into mindless fratricide and civil war, despite the best efforts of Rice and diplomats throughout the world.

This kind of thing could legitimate a policy of expelling Palestinians from the west bank into gaza, declaring them a state, and putting a healthy DMZ on the border.
Destroy the Synagogues? Why not? It's their land now and they get to do what they want with it.

It may be just as well, given that criticism from State would more likely than not be aimed at Israel for "permitting the destruction" or "provoking civil disorder" or some such formulation. No, that wouldn't make sense... and yes, I expect people to start saying it anyway. Blaming Israel is a spinal reflex for some.
Just to clarify for the non-historians, it was Arab Muslims that preserved much of ancient Greek philosophy (upon which most of classical Islamic philosophy is based). The Ottomans did many great things, especially in architecture, but by the time they arrived on the European scene in force during the 14th century, Greek philosophy, especially Aristotlean philosophy had long been revived. It is worth reflecting on the fact that the Greek empire of the Byzantines was less interested in classical philosophy than their Arab Muslim rivals. It is also worth reflecting on the fact that the civilizational divide between Byzantium and Rome was so great that Western Europe's cultural flowering, which began in earnest during the 12th century, owes more to its contact with the Jews and Muslims of the Caliphate than with Eastern Christendom.
I should also have mentioned in my previous post that it was Arab Muslims who passed on to Christendom the concept of zero (which they took from Indic civilization--which had millennia-long contact with what we call the Middle East--at least as far back as the Dilmun Civilization). Classical Arab civilization also has the distinction of being the first to develop algebraic systems. (It should be remembered that the word "algebra" comes from the first word--"al-jabr"--of a seminal 9th century Arab mathematics text that classifies and provides solutions for quadratic equations and explicates a system for completing the square.) To steal shamelessly from Professor Lewis, "What went wrong?"
