US actor Sean Penn bales water out of a boat with a plastic cup as he and members of his entourage make an attempt to rescue stranded people in New Orleans. (AFP)
I am just speechless with this one! What is even more funny is that this story is traveling around the world from The Australian to The Turkish Press. I wonder what his friends in Iran think?
EFFORTS by Hollywood actor Sean Penn to aid New Orleans victims stranded by Hurricane Katrina foundered badly overnight, when the boat he was piloting to launch a rescue attempt sprang a leak.The plug, Sean... The plug.
Penn had planned to rescue children waylaid by Katrina's flood waters, but apparently forgot to plug a hole in the bottom of the vessel, which began taking water within seconds of its launch.
The actor, known for his political activism, was seen wearing what appeared to be a white flak jacket and frantically bailing water out of the sinking vessel with a red plastic cup...
...With the boat loaded with members of Penn's entourage, including a personal photographer, one bystander taunted the actor: "How are you going to get any people in that thing?"

Last time Sean heard that was a bath house in the Tenderloin.
What kind of fool sets out in an overloaded boat without a bailer? Penn needs to have his boating license revoked.
Is that a Kevlar vest he's got on? It's too small to be a PFD, and not day-glo enough to be a hi-visibility vest that first responders wear.
Looks like Ol' Sean doesn't trust the folks he's there to save not to shoot his grandstanding ass and take off with his leaky boat.
How fortunate that FEMA had the foresight to leave people in New Orleans to attract Sean to it! What political brillance! What a publicity coup! For their next act, perhaps an embarassment involving Jane Fonda or Barbra Streisand. After all, what are we paying taxes for?

I am sorry that so many people were trapped and died in New Orleans, but President Bush isn't omnipotent. I think he made some mistakes in the early going, but his detractors need to inform themselves as to the facts.
The blame begins with the city itself.
That picture looks a lot like the one of Cindy Sheehan and Al Sharpton "praying". In other words..... it's a fake.
So where are all the pro-Bush celebrities going to NOLA to try to help, let alone getting in a boat to try to save lives? Anyone? Anyone?
Sean would have done better by using the flotation devices available in his private jet. I'll give him credit for bring a smile to my face in spite of the horriic situation in NO.

While not sure of the exact make and model of this aluminum "john boat" it appears to be very similar to mine. A typical 14-17 foot boat of this type has a US Coast Rating Maximum Capacity of 4 to 6 People. If this photo is real, it shows that there are already 3 people onboard this vessel. It's probably a good thing that they left the plug out and had to retereat to shore instead of jeporadizing the life and safety of innocent victims of Katrina.

Nice to see a celebrity trying, albeit pathetically, trying to do something rather than talking about going to, uh, well, going to see what they can donate in terms of dollars. A dollar won't save my child but a boat will. Hell, I'm generous... take my neighbors children first. I'd rather mine sit on this roof for four days waiting for slowpokes than have even one drown in a sinking boat.

You folks are leaving out some important details about Sean Penn's efforts, such as the fact that he DID lead several people to safety, AND he handed them cash when they got there as well. He also accompanied to hospital those who needed to go.

I was the "taunting bystander."
I wasn't really taunting; rather I was pissed off and favoring profanity. So many people who were willing to help couldn't get into the city to do so; yet Penn, with his boat-load of camera men, went out sight-seeing. All of the real rescue boats would push out with only two people and return, much later, with thankful victims. Flat-boats only hold 5-6 people. People were in desperate need of assistance and he had a boat full of people. I find the suggestion that he rescued 40 people and was out there HIGHLY suspect. I was there for most of the day.
In Penn's defense, the boat wasn't really about to sink. It did, however, take them about a half hour to get the necessary help to locate the "of/on" switch for the outboard motor. (The entertaining part of an otherwise depressing day.)

oops. I read my posting (preceeding this one) and apparently, like Penn, I am prone to mistakes. He was "out there." I meant to say that I think he'd have a hard time proving he was out there for 8 HOURS. A really, really HARD time. Moreover, the boats that really were there ALL day (4:00 all boats were supposed to quit)were bringing in close to 40 people, not the one that came out in the afternoon and could'nt fire up their outboards...
Penn is an idiot! He needs to stick w/acting, (which he is not very good at either) and stop trying to make Americans look like uncaring troglodytes!

I may not have been on the boat with Penn, but I was there, yelling at his boat full of people. I don't know if one of the photographers was "personal." I don't care. I know he was there to get someone in particular because he had dropped in the previous day and stated as much. Good for him.
I am merely alleging that 40 rescues and 8+ hours on the high seas of New Orleans was a gross exaggeration.
I have never seen so many haters as there are on the "Christian" boards. Sean is the one who is being Christian. He is saving lives if they are on his side or not. He is putting himself in harms way to help others. I commend him. I did not see Marine 1 in there helping save people (it was probably being used to ferry the Bush dog from Crawford to the White House with its' personal photographer). Hypocrites and cowards. I for one wish I had done what Sean did.

Hello guys. I want, No, I guess I need to tell ya'all about someone I met today. Well, maybe it was yesterday. I really don't know. In this surreal environment, the images, the fire calls, the rescues, the recoveries, the faces...they are all merging and blurring for me now.
First I need you to remember that New Orleans is not flooded with water. We are flooded with sewage. Rotting raw waste, oil, gas, rotted food, dead bodies, chemicals God only knows what methyl Ethyl bad stuff is here.
I was working with a couple of guys a few blocks from the Superdome in a residential neighborhood. We were going from house to house looking for living people, but finding many more dead than alive. We were wading through about three foot of whatever this stuff is that is several feet deep and all through town. A couple of guys in civilian clothes came by with a small fishing boat. We exchanged nods and they started doing the same thing we were. A while later and a few doors down, I noticed one of the guys was escorting a frail elderly man across a yard toward the boat. The mas started to fall and this guy swept him up with so much tenderness it touched my heart. I was pleased to see a volunteer civilian there, and doing that. A few minutes later, the same civilian was escorting a very frail looking women across the same yard. I started that direction to see if there might be more in need. The women slipped and disappeared. This civilian didn't blink, he dove, yes he dove head first into the sewage/slop whatever and surfaced with a lady in his arms. He tenderly wiped the sludge from her face as he carried her toward the boat. He sat this lady in the boat like you would imagine a new groom setting down his bride. At that point I was along this civilian and reached out to shake his hand, when I recognized him as being Sean Penn. He confirmed his identity and asked me if he was doing alright and asked me to let him know if we needed his help. He said he was going to take this couple to the hospital and would be back soon.
I looked around to see where the TV cameras were, and there were none. I have read the bad boy negative press about Sean Penn for years, and I guess I had believed it. Almost an hour later Sean was back. In and out of the boat, in and out of yards, in and out of homes,back and forth to the hospital, and I never did see any reporters or cameras. Sean came here, probably without any ones permission from wherever it is that he usually is, and with a determined look upon his face and an even more determined attitude, risking the deadly water snakes infesting this wet stuff all over, wading sometimes neck deep, and doing as much or more than anyone else could do.
Guys, ya'all have TVs and probably know more about the whole picture here than I do. My guess is that bunches of celebrities have called press conferences and have donated bunches of money to this cause like they always do. Sean Penn, whom I have never had positive feelings for has earned my respect. From my short exchange with him, and from the way he carried himself, I will be floored to hear of him doing any of this for publicity. It was too hands on, tender and determined for that.
