Aliye Cetinkaya, a journalist from the Turkish daily Sabah newspaper, who was reporting on the recent protests over the offensive caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed, was stoned in Konya for reasons demonstrators said were provocative – as she did not cover her head. Cetinkaya was taken away by male colleagues after stones hit her head and shoulders. The female journalist was attacked for being ‘sexually provocative’ for not wearing a head scarf at the demonstration organised by the Peoples Education Research and Support Group in Konya (He-Da-Der) and entitled ‘Loyalty to the Prophet’.Two men were apprehended and charged with stoning on Monday, February 13, 2006.
A group of protestors insisted that Aliye Cetinkaya get off the bus where she was reporting the march, as they claimed she was provoking the crowd. At this moment, somebody started reciting the Koran into a microphone.
Approximately 30 people then started throwing stones at Cetinkaya, seated with her legs dangling from the back of the vehicle and taking notes. They claimed that her clothes and way of sitting was inappropriate while the Koran was being read, and shouted words of abuse at her.
Cetinkaya had to be rescued by her colleagues
But that is not all... an Islamist Group is filing charges against Cetinkaya for "Disturbing the Peace" that carries up to 3 years of jail time!
One of the groups in the demonstration, the Islamist "Association for Training, Research and Cooperation of the People" (HEDA-DER) meanwhile filed a complaint against Cetinkaya the same day, accusing her of disturbing the demonstration, an offence that carries a fine or between 18 months and three years imprisonment under a 1983 law on public demonstrations.Kate says it best:
"Freedom of the press is one thing - Unnecessary provocation is quite another."

Actually this should help Turkey in its quest for EU membership. The EU pols are falling all over each other to suck up to middle eastern facists over cartoons. They'll surely not offend the Turkish fascists by telling they can't join the EU.
To inject a few facts into this debate: Konya is the Colorado Springs of Turkey. A few guys from there acting like complete asses does not reflect on a country of over 80 million people. Does Eric Rudolph define American Christianity? (I know he's not from Colorado...) Didn't think so.
The Turkish government, while Islamist, actively bans headscarves from universities and national celebrations. The issues are not quite as simple as they're being presented here. Turkey has strong secular-nationalist tendencies and some religious extremism as well (which the governement heartily cracks down on). Sounds like just about anywhere else.
An interesting fact lost in all of this insanity, is that Turkey forbids the wearing of headscarfs in government buildings. Girls can not were head scarfs in schools. The rules that France adopted were first in acted in Turkey. They are trying to be a secular government but they still have radical muslims in their midst

Its not just the government and the secular folks of Turkey that will be able to flood Europe. These guys are Turkish citizens and they will also be able to have the free run of Europe.

And tell the oh so tolerant and secular Turkish govt to give back Hagia Sophia to Christians to use as a church. We built it. We occupied it for something like a 1000 years. Christians never willingly surrendered it. It was stolen from them. Converted to a mosque to make sure the Christians knew they were a "humiliated" people. It was wrong to take it. It is never right to steal a place of worship. It should be returned to the people who originally built it and worshipped at the site.
But this will never happen. It still matters a great deal to Turks that Christians in their country dont forget their "tolerated" status. The so-called ready for the EU govt regularly hassles the Church over its properties in the guise of secular law. This so-called ready for the EU govt steadfastly refuses to recognize Bartholmew as the ecumenical Patriarch, insisting that they are the ones who define his office. His opinion doesnt matter and the opinion of 100 million Orthodox doesnt matter either. As dumb backwards Christians they apparently need to be told by muslims who is our leader and who is not. I guess this is just kindness on the part of the muslims, right? to be so helpful to us in deciding who is a leader of one branch of the Church?
Finally, this oh so modern and secular and ready for the EU country seized the seminary of the Ecumenical Patriarchate and steadfastly refuses to give it back. This Church cant educate its priests in its own territory because the determination of the govt to pursue a clever and disguised campaign to keep this church "humilated" continues to this day and there is no sign whateever that they will.

This seriously scared me; but I wasn't so sure why. Somehow, I don't think the right would realistically succeed in bringing sharia into the US. And yet still, the tone of the statement carried with it the ruthlessness and reality of sharia.
Then I realized, what scared me about it was the certitude of the tone. It has the same disdain and narrow-mindedness that the mullahs have toward women. It's a certitude that betrays tolerance and unwittingly aligns the writer with the intolerant right he/she so fears.
