Why Must Democrats Always Meet With the Wartime Enemy?

Yesterday's news was disgusting and theacherous but shocking? ...No!

This news yesterday that democrats were meeting with Hamas terrorists on the sly is disgusting but not so shocking:

Sources close to the Hamas-led government claimed that Hamas representatives recently held talks with officials from the US Democratic Party at a secret location.
Ynet has much, much more on these secret meetings.

This, of course, isn't the first time that democrats have held secret meetings with the enemy during wartime...

This certainly is nothing new for the democrats.

1864- During the Civil War democrats often met secretly with the Confederacy.

A democratic pamphlet handed out during the Civil War. (Wikipedia)
Dartemis explains:

Copperheads nominally favored the Union but they strongly opposed the war, for which they blamed abolitionists, and they demanded immediate peace and resisted the draft laws. They wanted Lincoln and the Republicans ousted from power, seeing the president as a tyrant who was destroying American republican values with his despotic and arbitrary actions.

Some Copperheads tried to persuade Union soldiers to desert. They talked of helping Confederate prisoners of war seize their camps and escape. They sometimes met with Confederate agents and took their money. The Confederacy encouraged their activities whenever possible.
1970- John Kerry secretly meets with representatives from the Vietcong in France while the Vietnam War is raging in southeast Asia.
Front Page reported:

John and Julia Kerry travel to Paris on a private trip. Kerry meets with Madam Win Thi Binh, the Foreign Minister of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of Vietnam (PRG) -- the political wing of the Vietcong -- and with representatives of Hanoi who were in Paris for the peace talks.
1983- Senator Ted Kennedy secretly offered the Soviet KGB assistance in bringing down Ronald Reagan in the upcoming US election.
HotAir reported:

That document is a memo regarding an offer made by Sen. Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts via former Senator John Tunney, both Democrats, to the General Secretary of the Communist Party, USSR, Yuri Andropov, in 1983. The offer was to help the Soviet leadership, military and civilian, conduct a PR campaign in the United States as President Ronald Reagan sought re-election. The goal of the PR campaign would be to cast President Reagan as a warmonger, the Soviets as willing to peacefully co-exist, and thereby turn the electorate away from Reagan. It was a plan to enlist Soviet help, and use the American press, in unseating an American president.

John Kerry (left) and Tom Harkin (middle) on their visit to Daniel Ortega, April 1985. The woman is unidentified.

1985- Senator John Kerry and Senator Tom Harkin during the Cold War met with the communist radical Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua.
Hacer.org reported:

You will recall the 1980s, and that decade's fierce debates over Central America policy. At the heart of these debates was Nicaragua: the Sandinistas, Castro, and the Soviet Union versus the Contras and the United States (or rather, not all of the United States: the Reagan administration, in particular). Kerry was an important player in all this. He was part of a group derided by Republicans as "'Dear Comandante' Democrats," for they would address letters to Daniel Ortega, the Sandinista No. 1, "Dear Comandante." ("But that's his title," they would plead, not unreasonably.)

Only months after he was sworn in, Kerry joined Harkin on an infamous trip to Managua, to meet with Comandante Ortega.
2002- Senator Jay Rockefeller took a trip by himself (his own admission) before the start of the war in Iraq and secretly told Syria who is allied with Saddam Hussein that the United States was going to war with Iraq.
From National Review:

I took a trip by myself in January of 2002 to Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Syria, and I told each of the heads of state that it was my view that George Bush had already made up his mind to go to war against Iraq — that that was a predetermined set course which had taken shape shortly after 9/11.
Bill Faith has much more on the Hamas story.
The Anchoress reported on this story yesterday.

I am not shocked by anything the Dems do. Disgusted, but not shocked. Nothing more than a bunch of communists.

Excellent history lesson. Some of us already knew it but too many didn't. I just added an excerpt and link to Dhimmicrats In Secret Talks With Hamas? (Updated and bumped. I'm betting it's Kerry)

Sure, but don't forget Jane Fonda(D), Jimmy Carter(D) made direct contacts with Soviet officials to try to subvert President Reagan's anti-communist policies , or Dan Rather (D) and Jim McDermott(D) visiting Saddam.

The Constitution, Logan Act of 1790s, plus a wide-ranging slew of related statutes, prohibit such "negotiations" (representing whom, on behalf of whom?) with foreign governments in any circumstances. Bad enough in peacetime, treasonous in war.

Are mere politics to blame for egregious lack of prosecutions, or more likely, extreme moral cowardice in the face of such treacherous behaviour? And even more, why is it always extreme leftwing ideologues performing their ablutions before slaveholders, murderous dictators, thugs and kleptocrats of every stripe?

Conservatives, Republicans by whatever name, simply do not engage in such betrayal. Note too, that most times these Democrat excursions are strictly clandestine, sub rosa, subsequently denied with full knowledge of their implications. The sellout is under-the-table, subject to extreme anti-American rationalizations. Even Benedict Arnold was not a liar and a thief.

Prosecute and convict these craven creeps. Absent ongoing scrutiny with serious personal repercussions, we are nurturing a nest of vipers in our midst (a classic Civil War cartoon depicts just this). Whatever the Copperheads' warped psychology, shared in spades by Kerry, Kennedy, and others of their ilk, it is high time simply to apply centuries-old penalties.

Projection: As indicated by New York Times' malfeasance, the Bush Administration will do nothing. As evidence of backdoor treason cumulates, who will stand against it? By default, these abnegators of their most solemn Oaths will feel free to strike many times again.

This is stupid. During the Civil War, the Democrats were the "conservative" party and the Republicans were the "liberal" party. The Democrats wanted to preserve the status quo and saw Lincoln as a flaming radical. Much of their electoral support was in the Slave States (today's "Red States").

Get that last part? The Vietnamese delegation was meeting US diplomats for peace talks. Why don't you criticize Nixon and Kissinger for sending officials to
meet with these Vietnamese?

The Sandinistas overthrew Anastasio Somoza, a brutal US-backed dictator, in 1979, in a popular revolution. Daniel Ortega held free and fair elections in 1984, monitored by the international community. He won overwhelmingly.

The Sandinistas were under attack by US-backed terrorist death squads named "Contras", that Reagan was illegally funding with the proceeeds of illegal arms sales to Iran.

There are persistent rumours that these arms sales were negotiated by Ed Meese and other Republican operatives in 1980, in a secret deal to prevent Jimmy
Carter from being re-elected. This alledgedly happened while 52 Americans were being held hostage by the Iranians. In this scenario, it's not the Democrats meeting with the enemy, but senior Republicans.

The United States was not at war with Syria in January 2002, to my knowledge.
Senator Rockefeller gave his opinion that Bush was determined to commit a war crime by invading a country that never attacked the United States. There's no reason to believe that this was a big secret. In fact, in the same month, Bush declared that Iraq was part of an "Axis of Evil", in a sabre-rattling speech before Congress.

Meeting with the legitimately-elected government of the Palestinian Authority is "meeting with the enemy during wartime"? I was not aware that the United States was at war with the Palestinian Authority. Did I miss something?

Hamas may have a radical, violent wing, but it was still elected by the Palestinian people. They are not friends of the United States, and of course meeting with them is anathema to the childish Bush doctrine, where you never talk with people who disagree with you.
