-Updated and Bumped-
This Pro-American Muslim country was fired up for the historic visit by President Bush.
They mobbed the president in the village of Fushe Kruje.

The Albanians even renamed a street after President George W. Bush for the occasion.

President Bush received a hero's welcome in Tirana, Albania today as he became the first US President to visit the staunch US ally and majoority Muslim country.
CBS News reported:
When Mr. Bush arrived on his brief stop in Tirana, the hills overlooking the capital boomed as military cannons fired a 21-gun salute to the president. Thousands of people gathered in the downtown square on a brilliantly sunny day to see the president and first lady Laura Bush.Bush met with Albanian soldiers who served in Iraq and Afghanistan during his visit.
Huge banners proclaimed “Proud to be Partners,” and billboards read “President Bush in Albania Making History.” Red-white-and-blue paper top hats with stars on top were passed out to well-wishers in this Balkan nation.
A herald trumpeter sounded a salute as Mr. Bush arrived at Albania's Palace of Brigades for an official welcome, playing "The Star Spangled Banner," reports CBS News White House Correspondent Mark Knoller. Mr. Bush was presented with an Albanian award - the Order of the National Flag - hailing him as a great ally of the Albanian people.

Prime Minister Berisha gave President Bush a very warm welcome as he arrived today in the Capital Tirana.
The White House reported:
PRIME MINISTER BERISHA: (As translated.) Today is a beautiful day. Today is a great day, historic for all Albanians. Among us is the greatest and most distinguished guest we have ever had in all times, the President of the United States of America, the leading country of the free world, George W. Bush.; his lady, Mrs. Laura Bush, and their close aides. For me, it's a great honor, and a special pleasure to thank them with gratitude and extend the most heartfelt welcome, in this historic visit, the first visit ever of a United States President in Albania.
Thank you heartily, Mr. President, from the bottom of our hearts, fulfilling ardent and long-awaited wish of all Albanians to have a special guest in their home. Tungjatjeta -- an Albanian word, means "may you have a long life." This is a most traditional greeting of Albanians that I chose to greet you on their behalf, on behalf of Albanians. Welcome to Albania, President Bush.
We have been blessed, however. We have won in all our efforts to defend our identity in Western oriented national vocation to emerge from the age of oppression to the age of dignity, from the age of darkness to the age of freedom. We have won because our just cause has always had the powerful support of the U.S.A., the greatest and the most precious friend of Albanian nation. God bless your great nation.

Albania has spent millions preparing for George W. Bush, even though he will be in the country, one of Europe's poorest, for just seven hours. Albanians have cleaned the streets, stocked up on thousands of United States flags and even retiled bathrooms for the U.S. president, the most important man ever to visit the long-isolated Balkan state. Pro-US Muslim Country Fired Up For Bush Visit

33 Comments:
Can anyone explain why Albania is so pro-American? Only in the light that most (all?) other Muslim nations are not. Does this have to do with US positions on past Balkan wars?
Derek- Certainly, a major part of the reason is the horrific abuse the country suffered under the communist regime.
And, the Albanian Prime Minister Berisha explained this bit of history today:
"President Wilson did not allow the partition of the newly proclaimed Albanian independent state. The U.S.A. recognized Albania 85 years ago. Your visit on this anniversary is its most beautiful crown, the climax of excellent, friendly relations between our two countries."
Albania is a largely secular country. The last census to support the claim that it is a Muslim majority country was taken around World War II, as far as I know. Since 1945, religion was banned by the communists for almost 50 years. Much of the religious heritage of the population was erased wholesale through an entire generation of people born and raised during communism, with little or no religious contacts.
Most Albanians today, being part of or descendants of that generation, are not interested in religion at all. This is especially in urban centers. Even people who refer to themselves as Muslim are usually only nominally such: they do not read the Koran, care about jihad, hate Jews, or anything of the sort. They see themselves as Muslim by loosely believing that there is a god, and Mohammed is his prophet. A lot of people have merged religiously conflicting monotheistic beliefs from Christianity, Islam, or Judaism, and do not even bother to try to make coherent sense out of them. For example, I know of people who call themselves Muslim, think Mohammed was God’s Prophet, but also think Jesus was the son of God, and the Jews are the chosen people. It's somewhat like the latest generation of Americans of Christian Heritage who rarely (if ever) go to church, abstain from sex until marriage, or practice any Judeo-Christian norms beyond celebrating Christmas, Easter, and so on. In general, religion just doesn’t play a considerable role in the lives of the vast majority of Albanians.
Albanians have found it particularly easy to let go of Islam since they adopted it for nominal reasons to begin with: just as a means to distinguish themselves from the neighboring Slavs and Greeks, who had ambitions of using religious congruity as an excuse to claim cultural sameness with Albania and annex Albanian lands to their newly formed states.
The history of the Balkans is ridiculously intricate, and has often hung on the whim of the then Great Powers, which had no interest or patience to get into Balkan history before making crucial decisions on the future of the Balkans nations. That is why it has often paid to use religion as a card for nationalistic purposed. For example, when the majority of Albania was orthodox Greek, the Greeks used it as a pretext to claim that Albania was nothing but a cultural suburb of Greece and needed to be annexed to the newly formed Greek state. Same thing with the Slavs in the north. So Albanians opted to convert to Islam in mass, in order to stand out from their neighbors and hopefully be more visible as a distinct ethnicity and culture, for future nation-building purposes.
The media loves to play the Muslim card with Albania. Whenever Albania is in the news, probably because so little about it is commonly known, it is usually tagged as the “Muslim Majority Country” in the Balkans. It is useful to do this to invoke a “Look, not all Muslim countries are fucked up and hate us” subconscious reaction amongst the readers. The fact that Albanians are so genuinely hysterically in love with America has nothing to do with Islam. It is not even a curious occurrence of love for America DESPITE Islam, because Albania is far less Muslim than contended.
The true reason Albanians go apeshit nuts about America is that for 50 years, Albanians were taught to hate and fear Americans. The communist regime made America sound like the ideological and practical opposite of what communism stood for. Because of the extreme isolation, America has grown into an almost mythological figure in the collective psyche of Albanians. Because they hated communism so much, they just assume, still to this day, that America is the opposite of it: free as opposed to oppressed, rich as opposed to poor, genuine, transgressive, and liberal as opposed to fake, dogmatic, and culturally repressed. Albanians have had naïve adulation for America, and since the demise of Communism they can express such sentiments freely. The intervention in Kosovo has only reinforced what has always been there.
Thank you Kejda for that information.
WILL THE REAL ALBANIA PLEASE STAND UP?
My sources paint a wholely different picture than that by Kejda, and in light of them . . .

. . . I have to say:
It's a bit embarrassing seeing Bush basking in what should be Clinton's slimelight.
Yes, I would prefer Clinton get all the credit for this beast of his making, and that Bush kept as far as possible from what I am convinced not only will come back to haunt America, but probably already has.
I like Bush, and I hate to see him share in the "legacy" that rightly belongs to Clinton.
I guess it shouldn't be a surprise to me that Bush supports a terrorist haven on Europe's doorstep, because Mr. Bush is a supporter for the "self determination" of the terrorists who call themselves "palestinians." No, I don't think it's malicious on his part, just foolish. They are playing him, and he's too naive to see it.
Also, something I find interresting is the connection between Balkan Muslims and the "palestinians." As Manfred Lehmann points out, many of the "palestinians" are really just displaced Muslim Bosnians. (Bosnian/albanian, no difference - they are all Balkan Muslims):
"The current turmoil in former Yugoslavia cannot be understood without knowledge of the region's long history of Balkan wars, ethnic strife, religious persecution and violence. The curious aspect about all this is the existence of a Moslem pocket in the heart of Europe, and how Bosnia came to be the origin of many of today's "Palestinians." . . .
The close ties between Palestinian and Bosnian Muslims—also called "Bushnaks,"[a little irony thing going on here???] their Arabic, Turkish name—was shown in World War II: The infamous mufti Hajj Amin el-Husseini, uncle of today's PLO member Faisal el-Husseini, set up an "Islamic Legion" consisting of Bushnaks to fight for Hitler."
I don't know if you remember, but the war to "save" the "ethnic albanians" was based on a concocted blood libel much the same as the blood libel that Jews "are oppressing" the poor "palestinians." If anything, there, as in Israel, the reverse was true: [If you've never seen the movie "Wag The Dog" I highly reccommend it]
In this last link, which I hope is wrong in it's assessment of Bush, we see his current wirlwind sell-America-down-the-River tour in some detail. If even part of this is true, this is NOT good news.
Sorry, Joe. I like your blog because you do things up in a detail that’s missing in most others, not to mention that you are usually right. But here I’m afraid you haven’t yet got the big picture.
Oh, yeah, and if Kejda is right about them being so "secular," why do they call him "God's Messenger?" DUH!
Warmest regards
ytba, your sources are exclusively from the Serbian propaganda. Yes, the same Serbs that attempted the ethnic cleansing of Kosova, sending refugees streaming through the border in what the western media described as an "exodus of biblical proportions", the same Serbs that killed 10000 Albanians, expelled a million of them, burned nearly 300000 houses, raped, pillaged all in the space of 3-4 months, in the worst genocide Europe has ever known since the WWII. Of course it's convenient for these Serbs to depict Albanians as "Muslim terrorists" because in the post 9-11 it would somehow justify future atrocities they have in store for the Kosovar Albanians.
"Bosnian/albanian, no difference - they are all Balkan Muslims" - Behold the Ignorance that you proudly pronounce!!!! If Palestinians were Bosnians, how come they don't speak Slavic? And how come they don't have the fair complexion and blue eyes like the rest of the Bosnians?
"Oh, yeah, and if Kejda is right about them being so "secular," why do they call him "God's Messenger?" DUH!"
By the same token then, if they were the muslim terrorist heaven you depict, why would they call - none other than George Bush - the God's Messenger?
"If Palestinians were Bosnians, how come they don't speak Slavic? And how come they don't have the fair complexion and blue eyes like the rest of the Bosnians?"
Manfred Lehmann didn't say ALL of them, he said . . . "how Bosnia came to be the origin of MANY of today's "Palestinians." . . .
Not all, but many, like . . .
"Ibrahim Bushnak, a Palestinian[sic] citizen of Israel"
("Remember that . . . Bushnak/Bushnaq" = "Bosniak," = "Bosnian") . . . as was alluded to above)
"Mohammad Bushnak" (appears to be an artist)
"Baseem Bushnak. Administrative Regulation of the Governorates in Palestine
"Palestinian[sic] Ali Bushnak" is supposed to want to climb Mt. Everest with a couple of Israelis
"Ramez Bushnak, 24, from Kafar Manda" (deceased)
"Ahamd bushnak" (captured by IDF)
"Ibtisam Mustapha Bushnak" mother
"Majdi Bushnak, 38, a Palestinian who lives in Kuwait"
"Mahmud Amin BUSHNAK "palestinian" politician
"Hilmi Bushnak" mentioned in story in Haaretz
"Farihan Bushnaq, Palestinian-American and Olympia resident"
"Nabil Bushnaq, Gynaecologist, born in Ramla/Palestine"
And those are just some from the first few pages of Google search, and there are probably plenty who kept their Bosnian family name, and there are plenty who aen't listed in Google.
The rest are Arabs from Syria, Jordan, S.Arabia, Iran, Iraq, etc., with only a few whose families lived there prior to Jews returning to OUR Land and making it prosperous.
Manfred Lehman is a scholar, in the real sense of that word. If he says many originated there, than I trust him that they did.
What are all these foreigners doing in MY LAND, and making the preposterous claim of "right of return?" And why are you lying to me about it?
Also, my Grandparents were respectively from Ireland and Poland. I know only a few words of Polish, and no Gaelic. What's the big deal if the "palestinians" don't speak 'slavik?' (For all I know, some do)
"the same Serbs that killed 10000 Albanians, expelled a million of them, burned nearly 300000 houses, raped, pillaged all in the space of 3-4 months, in the worst genocide Europe has ever known since the WWII.
Your claims of "genocide" have long been shown by the investigations to be false, and that what attrocities were committed by Serbs were grossly exagerated by your propagandists.. It may have been 3,000 killed, not 100,000 or even 10,000. Nato killed more than 6,000 civilians in it's bombing campaign.
You may not like this link, but it's based on reports from BBC, and Wall St. Journal, etc., and is a pretty good summary of the findings. NO GENOCIDE BY SERBIANS.
There's more, but it's late and that's enough for tonight.
ytba;
BBC an authority? Think not. The Serbians are currently demonstrating their priorities. I wouldn't take their word for it if they said the sun was setting somewhat westerly of them. They cannot and will not accept that Greater Serbia is history, not gonna happen. Sorry.
A FEW MORE RELEVANT LINKS
There was no genocide by Serbians, and in order to get us into the war, they had to lie to us.
However, attrocities do continue. It just that they are being perpetrated against Serbs.
In this history lesson we are told, and it seems quite plausable, that despite all the Communist abuse, most people on both sides tried to deal with it politically until the Muslim terrorists started shooting and blaming it on the Serbs. So, in a sense, those Albanians who are peacful are victims as well, of both the terrorists and their NATO and US enablers.
And they complain about the mess in Iraq. Bush has enough on his plate with Iraq, he shouldn't leave this one in Clinton's lap where it belongs, if there's room.
Even back in 1999 some Jews knew that the Serbs were being railroaded by the same forces that were attacking us. And now that we have recent historical proof of the harm the activist press can do, are any of them ashamed of what they have helped destroy? The fact that those who did it then have not only not changed but have gotten worse is all I need to answer that question.
Yeah, and some little dog will come and bark about my references without dealing with what's in them. But at least the thoughtful will consider them. If there are any thoughtful objections to what I've presented, I'll respond, otherwise I don't intend to waste my time.
Also, although KEJDA is a real name (both first, and last it seems) it is also a regional equivalent of QAEDA, in case anyone is interested.
"Also, although KEJDA is a real name (both first, and last it seems) it is also a regional equivalent of QAEDA, in case anyone is interested."
It seams???? You are not sure, are you? Dear google academic, unless Kejda is 7 years old, is unlikely that her name is inspired by the now infamous terrorist group. As usual, hatred blocks mental capacity. Maybe you should've clicked in a few more ooooo's to find some more palestinians of bosnian descent ... LOL ... and forget about figuring out what the name Kejda means in Albanian.
Again you bring a truckload of rubbish Serbian propaganda. The conflict in Kosova was so recent and public and everything happened in the plain view of the world media, that I doubt that President Bush is waiting to read Julia Gorin's commentaries to know the truth. It is beyond me, why would any American, with even the tinest amount of patriotism would side with Serbia, the leash dog at the hands of Putin, which has as it's ultimate goal the weakening and humiliation of US in the world scene.
And since you provided links for the "thoughtful", allow me provide more links in case someone was in a comma in the past 10 years.
From the site of the US State Department:
"On November 10, 1999, ICTY Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte told the U.N. Security Council that her office had received reports of more than 11,000 killed in 529 reported mass grave and killing sites in Kosovo. ... Press accounts and eyewitness accounts provide credible details of a program of destruction of evidence by Serbian forces throughout Kosovo and even in Serbia proper. The number of victims whose bodies have been burned or destroyed may never be known, but enough evidence has emerged to conclude that probably around 10,000 Kosovar Albanians were killed by Serbian forces."

Why do albanians 'love' Bush? Or USA for that matter? As somebody asked 'why albania is so pro-american' (for some of us with a short attention span - albania was the most anti-american country in the world 20 years ago or so).
It's very simple, and I'm going to be condesending - because you all deserve it:
- USA bombed Serbia on behalf of Albanians. (Imagine Russia bombing USA on behalf of Mexicans in TX or CA. can you?)
- USA is pushing very hard (noticed the Putin-Bush discussion lately?) for taking away 15% of Serbia's teritory and giving that to Albania (funny, right? Imagine CA going to Mexico... or TX, or FL to Cuba...) - Now that is getting 'hot' because of elections (we got something done!), but nevertheless..,
Now, all of you goofballs (I dont count albanians here - they are working on their agenda) - how do you feel about supporting (militarily, politicaly and financialy) al-qaeda, so called 'kosovo liberation army', hamas... etc, just because it serves tactical, daily political agendas of 'blue-s' and 'red-s'? And doing that with your money, your troups, and your ever so diminishing reputation of a democratic and free nation?
Or, more accurately - how do you feel about CONTINUING to support and pay for islamo-fascist movements and terrorist organisations?
Cause, that's what this is. Plain and simple.
That's what you're supporting, working for, and ultimately that's the crap your eating up every day when you sit in your chair and turn on the 'most trusted' pile of shi* that interest groups can pay for you to see... :)
Funny, huh?
About the 'secular Albania' :) Anybody stupid enough to take it? :) If you check the UN data from March 2004 terror in Kosovo - you'll see that the main hobby of these nice 'secular' fundamental albanian muslims is burning christian churches (300 in one week - good chunk of that 800 to 1 thousand years old, check the UN data), and building mosques (500+ in 2 years - check the data)
Hey, don't trust me - CHECK THE PUBLICLY AVAIALABLE UN DATA. Think about it.
On a brigh side - did you hear that #1 got his wrist watch nicked while receiving the 'love and gratitude' from Albanians?
Bizzare, appropriate, plain f'n hillarious.
:)
I'm expecting Putin (albanians were very 'in love' with Stalin's Russia too) to put it on Ebay one of these days and to make a little fun with it. E.g. to call george (I call him Vladimir) and ask 'can you tell me what time it is?' :)))
On a not-so-bright side - you know who's really paying for this crapola? Can't you guess? Guys that are going after the 'wmd-s', 'mass-graves', 'bringing the freedom and democracy'... etc. But they're just numbers, right? Also, succers that believed in a 'leader of a free world' are getting their share of sobriety too, but wth.
So, you might be asking yourself - why would we be doing something like this for (this fn Serb is full of it...)? I dont know - check the political process, contributions, scandals and timings, read some Bzezinsky books... etc.
Wanna discuss this - do you homework. But do it yourself.
9.11; madrid; london; beslan; fort dix; jfk; ...
I guess I'm a tad dissappointed here - you probably didn't notice, but it's true. A little bit.
THE ACCUSATIONS OF 8 YEARS AGO HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO BE FALSE
What will get them to stop repeating ancient accusations as "proof" that they occured?
The bottom line is
"The court [International Court Of Justice, ICJ] concluded that there was no genocide in Bosnia, except for the massacres in July 1995 around Srebrenica. . . . [and also that Serbia] . . . was not responsible for “complicity in [that] genocide. . . ”.
And yet, people like "dritan" can only bring references FROM BEFORE THE FACTS WERE ESTABLISHED. But it doesn't matter how many false proofs they cite, because subsequent investigation has shown the initial exagerations to be false.
If even the UN, who is no friend of Serbia, says so then there's a good chance it's true. It's the same as in the case with our "palestinian" enemies who still repeat the lie that there was a "massacre at Jenin," despite the fact the the UN, no friend of Israel, says there wasn't.
Another example of dritan's strained world view. He cites . . .
"OSCE:
Human Rights in Kosovo: As Seen, As Told"
Will someone please tell him that . . .
"Former OSCE Observer Speaks Out No evidence of genocide or ethnic cleansing in Kosovo"
Oh, and dritan also came up with this whopper in his first post:
"And how come they ["palestinians"] don't have the fair complexion and blue eyes like the rest of the Bosnians?"
Here's a picture or your "blond haired blue eyed" Muslim Bosnians doing what they do best, frothing at the mouth. Funny, they look just like "palestinianz" to me. . . . (and exactly why are "secular" Bosnians protesting the Danish cartoons, anyway?)
And here's miss Albania. How's this for a blond-haired blue-eyed beauty? Well, the beauty part is correct, anyway.
The "peaceful" people of Kosovo make the UN feel "welcome." (not) The UN even went so far as to investigate some of their oh so friendly behavior.
dritan needs some more up to date material from reliable sources if he wants to get the UN to reopen their investigation.
Since he likes the older links, here's one that I don't think he will like, or this newer one by a general who thinks we supported the wrong side, where he writes . . .
"The objective of the Albanians is to purge all non-Albanians, including the international community's representatives, from Kosovo and ultimately link up with mother Albania thereby achieving the goal of "Greater Albania." The campaign started with their attacks on Serbian security forces in the early 1990s and they were successful in turning Milosevic's heavy-handed response into worldwide sympathy for their cause. There was no genocide as claimed by the West -- the 100,000 allegedly buried in mass graves turned out to be around 2,000, of all ethnic origins, including those killed in combat during the war itself."
Just like Islamic terrorists to start a fight, and when the other side defends themselves they play the victim and blame the whole thing on the victim. And Clinton got America to buy it hook, line and sinker.
Like I said, Bush should have left this one alone.
"I guess I'm a tad dissappointed here - you probably didn't notice, but it's true. A little bit." -- stan
Remind me not to get you really upset.
Well done, btw. I wish more people knew that stuff, especially the author of this excellent site. I guess it just goes to show that one person can't do it all. It's something the bloggers need to remember.

ytba, unless you come up with some serious facts, and solid proof that the facts that I presented were fabricated, I won't bother with your rabid hateful barking anymore. I provided you with concrete facts and proof from authoritative sources, US State Dept, UK govt, ICTY, OSCE, HRW etc etc, and all you can come up with is a collection of some random pictures from the internet, your opinions and ... Julia Gorin again. You questioned the number of ethnic Albanians murdered by the barbaric forces of the dictatorial regime of Slobodan Milosevic, I gave you proof and now you call it outdated? Well, here's how it stands today and reported by every news agency:
"Some 10,000 ethnic Albanians died and hundreds of thousands fled Kosovo during the 1998-1999 conflict between Serbian government troops and ethnic Albanian separatists."
Regarding religion again, since both you and your Serbian friend seem to be stuck on that nail. Reality, my friend, is not something that you can manufacture freely on the internet; US and the rest of the democratic western countries, have thousands of solders on the ground and thousands of bureaucrats and diplomats both in Kosova and Albania, and they know the situation and actual realities way better that you can ever hope to learn by googling. If they consider Albanians, as a state and as a people, a staunch ally in the global war against terror and religious fundamentalism, their word no doubt weights far more than yours. Here's reality:
"Albania recently decided to triple its deployment in Afghanistan to 140 troops, and it has about 120 troops in Iraq - a presence that President Alfred Moisiu says will not end as long as the Americans are engaged there." By comparison, how many troops is Serbia contributing?
And here's more:
"The majority of Albanians today are either Atheists or Agnostics. According to the official US Government Report [1]: "No reliable data were available on active participation in formal religious services, but estimates ranged from 25 to 40 percent.", leaving 60 to 75 percent of the population non-religious.[2][3][4]"
The country does not have a history of religious extremism and takes pride in the harmony that exists across religious traditions and practices. Religious pragmatism continued as a distinctive trait of the society and interreligious marriage has been very common throughout the centuries, in some places even the rule. There is a strong unifying cultural identity, where Muslims and Christians see themselves as Albanian before anything else. This has been solidified historically by the common experience of struggling to protect their culture in the face of various outside conquerors."
AS I SHOWED, AND SUPPORTED WITH SOLID REFERENCES
The UNITED NATIONS INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE investigated and found Serbia was NOT GUILTY of genocide, not even in Srebrenica!
I have also shown that Albania was, and is even more so now, the problem, even necessitating the UN to investigate attacks on them by the "grateful" people whose sorry butts we saved from the victims they provoked into defending themselves
I gave dritan facts WITH solid references. He gave me buffalo chips.
If he is too delusional to accept the facts, or thinks his readers are, that's his problem.
And he can't show me that the UN was wrong in acquitting the Serbs, so he skirts the issue and says that most of Albanians are "secular" Muslims. But even if that were true, it doesn't matter as long as their KLA (= UCK) Army is an Al Qaeda "clone".
Of course, it isn't really true they aren't "religious" just because they haven't recovered from Soviet oppression, because . . .
"The majority of Albanians today, up to 75% of the population, are nonreligious. NEVERTHELESS, despite such non-religiousity, MOST Albanians associated with a religion, to which the THE MAJORITY associated with Islam.[1]"[my emphasis].

http://drsanity.blogspot.com/2007/06/every-days-new-day.html
I have a few things to say that bear repeating here. (sorry, I just don't have the time to put all links into href form)
"The American people seem to understand, . . . "
Actually, they haven't got a clue.
It's not because they are stupid; it's because for some strange reason
http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/ReadArticle.asp?ID=15577
they have never been told the truth.

And, not only has the truth been withheld, we were LIED TO
http://www.converge.org.nz/pma/sholo.htm
to justify the war that WAS NEVER APPROVED BY EITHER CONGRESS (OR THE UN), NOR WAS THE SITUATION IN ANY WAY EITHER AN "IMMINENT" OR "GATHERING" THREAT.
BUT, our involvement on the side of what has been shown to be our enemies

by aiding the KLA (=UCK) which is an al Qaeda clone,

and we are still "involved" in the quagmire there.

Of course, you could say our allies approved, since NATO was involved (NATO bombing killed around twice as many civilians as the ground fighting, btw), and the UN did come on board at some point. But they weren't too happy with the way they were welcomed

So why is Bush so eager to adopt

Clinton's little international bastard child?

We don’t even need DNA evidence for that.
If he persists in his folly, Bush had better be ready for more than his watch to be nicked.

"however — and historians will certainly agree — that … [that] … war … was a catastrophic mistake."
Yes, "that" war, not in Iraq but in Bosnia was,
http://www.frontpagemag.com/Articles/Printable.asp?ID=21712
and we should eagerly hope historians discover it soon, before modern civilization is erased by it's own self-inflicted extinction in cooperation with the Islamist beast that wishes to replace it with the mother of all desolations.
Perhaps one should believe your own eyes and ears if you were around at that time. There were refugee camps, mass exodus, captured films, congressional reports, etc.,
I guess if it's not technically a genocide, that makes it okay for some. If Americans committed war crimes in Vietnam or Iraq, that means everyone was just as wrong? Right?
Might as well get in bed with Holocaust deniers.
Ooops... I knew that one is comming :) 'holocoust deniers'!
Now, just to clarify the cynicysm of this 'righteous cry':
Albania and Albanians were in love with Hitler too. Even more so than with mr Bush (again - open your books and check it out). During the WWII Albanians were nazi allies 'to the bitter end'... and not because they dug Nietze, or Heideger, or the 'painter' himself - but because Hitler was waging a horrifying war agains SERBS in Kosovo. And guess what? He also promissed 'independence'...
What's not to love!?
Recent Pictures of Bush in tirana are pretty much copies of the ones of the 'painter' in Kosovo some 65 years ago.
Same 'enthusiasm', same 'passionate' camaradery. Same bc about 'liberation' :(
BTW - There were approx 400 Jews in Prishtina (Kosovo) before 'painter' occupied it... and created Albanian SS division - guess what happened to those 400 Jews after that...
So, there was a reason our parents made us do our homework... If we could only remember what it was?
Maybe to help us diff the BS from the truth? Wth, turn on the 'most trusted' and sit back... someone will pay for an interesting afternoon.

There's ton of stuff on the inet about this just google: skenderbeg kosovo nazi..
Nice pictures... 'painter' of course was not present 'in person' (domestic political situation was stable) but the spirit of love, liberty... devotion...
:(
It seems that liberators come and go, but those fundamental things never change.
1. For those that would like to depict Kosova's struggle for freedom as an islamist cause, here's the testimony of the Catholic Archbishop of Kosova, Mons. Mark Sopi, given before the US House of Foreign Relations Commitee, making the case for Independence.

2. Stan seems to equate the US President to Adolf Hitler. Perhaps out of his own blind hatred, he apparently doesn't see the irony, that it is Stan that is supporting the ideals of a Hitler-like mass-murderer like Slobodan Milosevic.
To quote from Stan's own links:
The PFSh was a puppet movement of the Italian Fasci di Combattimenti, with Benito Mussolini at its head and organized along the same lines and principles, and with its own paramilitary Black Shirts. It was never a mass movement
From Wikipedia also:
Serbian Orthodox Church and Holocaust
The Serbian Orthodox Church openly collaborated with the Nazis, and many priests publicly defended the persecution of the Jews. On 13 August 1941, approximately 500 distinguished Serbs signed “An Appeal to the Serbian Nation”, which called for loyalty to the occupying Nazis. The first three signers were bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church. On 30 January 1942, Metropolitan Josif, the acting head of the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church, officially prohibited conversions of Jews to Serbian Orthodoxy, thereby blocking a means of saving Jewish lives. At a public rally, after the government Minister Olcan “thanked God that the enormously powerful fist of Germany had not come down upon the head of the Serbian nation” but instead “upon the heads of the Jews in our midst”, the speaker of these words was then blessed by a high-ranking Serbian Orthodox priest.
Fascism in Serbia
In August 1942, Dr. Harald Turner (the chief of the German civil administration in Serbia) announced that Serbia was the only country in which the “Jewish question” was solved and that Belgrade was the “first city of a New Europe to be Judenfrei.” Turner himself attributed this success to Serbian help.
The fight against the Jewish influence had started six months before the German invasion when the government of Serbia issued legislation restricting Jewish participation in the economy and university enrolment.
ANTI-SEMITISM IN SERBIA DURING THE WORLD WAR II
----------------
The conclusion is that, anywhere in the Nazi occupied Europe, the occupiers set up their own pupet, kuilsling regimes, created branches of the Nazi and Fascist Parties, found collaborators etc. It happened in Albania, as well as in Serbia, Greece, Romania, France, Danmark, Norway, everywhere. It is a dark page in the European history, but this is after all, what happens with every occupation. Yes, there was a Scanderbeg SS Division set up by the Germans in Kosova, which according to historical documents (Bernd Fischer, "Albania during WWII"), the nazis themselves didn't trust and considered not battle worthy. Yes, they did commit revenge attacks against local Serbs and perhaps took part in rounding up Jews, and that I find shameful. However, there was no Nazi Party in Albania before the occupation and certainly not after. Even today, there is no neo-nazi movement in Albania whatsoever, and no anti-semitism. In comparison, there are in Serbia:
Tel-Aviv university - Antisemitism in Serbia
Neo-Nazi threats in Serbia
Serbia: Neo-Nazis threaten to kill independent journalist
Serbian police arrest member of neo-Nazi youth group
And finally:
Brad Blitz -
Serbian connection to the bombing of three synagogues in Sacramento
But I do believe that the arsonists were encouraged by two things: the xenophobic rhetoric from Yugoslavia that is actively parroted by the Serbian diaspora and, above all, by the hate crimes committed in the Balkans.
On behalf of the Serbs, right-wing groups have circulated anti-Muslim and anti-Albanian slogans. They have repeated the false accusations that the Kosovars are fundamentalists and have recast the wars in Bosnia and Kosovo as civil wars rather than admit the truth behind Serbia's occupation and genocidal programs.
On behalf of right-wing groups, the Serbian-American community has financed extremists who are also in the service of Europe's leading neo-Nazi politicians. They have attracted racists and given them public platforms from which they fashioned their prejudices into policies for southeastern Europe.
More important, however, are the ideological ties between Serbia proper and the far right. Ultranationalist groups throughout North America and Europe have cheered on the Serbian campaigns of ethnic cleansing. For the ultranationalists, ethnic cleansing makes sense. Reflecting the way they view the world, the Serbs enthusiastically renounced the ideals of inclusion and proportional representation and crushed minorities in their way.

3. In the same Wiki page that Stan provided, I find also these links:
Bernd Fischer, historian: The Jews of Albania during the Zogist and Second World War Periods
While others in the Balkans - and obviously in the rest of Europe - have institutionalized discrimination, participated passively or often enthusiastically in some of the most horrific crimes against humanity in relation to Jews, Albanians, often at personal risk, have opened their country and often their homes to not only Albanians Jews but to foreign Jews as well.
Harvey Sarner, Jewish-American author - Rescue in Albania - 100% of Jews in Albania rescued from Holocaust
While the Nazis tried to deport all Jews not of Albanian citizenship, the Albanian people helped them escape concentration camps by taking them into their homes, giving them food and shelter, and hiding them. At first, individual Albanians saved Jews on their own initiative. Later, when it became more dangerous, the task was organized by National Liberation Councils in the towns and villages. There were cases where Jewish families, in great danger of discovery, were moved from family to family and village to village, from town to country and back again. Sometimes Jewish families travelled with false passports given to them by Albanians. Often Jews were disguised as Albanian peasants and covertly relocated. In the process, many Albanians were arrested and shot to death for their heroic activities.
...
In Prishtina, capital city of the annexed territories, the local authorities complied with German demands and jailed 60 Jewish men. A sympathetic doctor, Spiro Lito, convinced the mayor that they must not let the Germans take the 60 Jews to Poland for extermination. He also convinced the German authorities that the Jewish prisoners had typhus and it was necessary to send the Jews to hospitals in Albania to avoid an epidemic. The Jews were taken to Berat, given false documents and spread around Albania, mostly to the friends of Dr. Lito in the cities of Lushnja, Shijak, Kavaja, and Kruja.
Also, from the Library of Congress, Senate Resolution 521: Commending the people of Albania on the 61st anniversary of the liberation of the Jews from the Nazi death camps, for protecting and saving the lives of all Jews who lived in Albania.
Whereas at the start of World War II, approximately 200 Jews lived in the Republic of Albania, and approximately 1800 Jews escaped to Albania from Western Europe and the former Yugoslavia;
Anti-Defamation League praised Albania as only occupied country where no Jews died at hands of Nazis
Norman Gershman's film of Albanians who rescued Jews
part 2
'...Sarner conceded that the Albanian government and the Albanian people did play a major role in the Holocaust and Final Solution: “In April, 1944, the Germans shipped 400 Jews from the annexed territories to Bergen-Belsen; 100 survived the war.”
The way the Albanian propagandists get around this problem is by arguing that Kosovo-Metohija and Western Macedonia were not a part of a Greater Albania. This is absolute nonsense and rubbish...'
Karl Savich; http://www.serbianna.com/blogs/savich/?p=34
Sarner = Harvey Sarner, interesting fella, he was the one of those that 'jumped right on board' on that 'poor, oppressed albanians' crappola, wrote a book about 'albanians saving jews' even, and when he was confronted with the facts - went back and eat up his own words...
Mind you so called 'KLA' (kosovo liberation army) was listed as a terrorist organisation in US and UN, until Clinton needed to 'patch the hole in his pants' - then KLA misteriosly dissappeared from that list...
also, Diogardi and Biden had a nice 'allowance' upgrade from 'poor and oppressed...', so they pushed that agenda too...
Anywho, there's a lot of crapolla about all this - keep in mind - NATO (US) bombed a sovereign country that didn't invade anyone, was not a US national security problem, no UN backing for that decision, international 'best practices' were broken, and only to support this terrorist islamic organisation... That took a LOT of propaganda crap.
Just imagine what needed to be done to 'cover' the facts and the 'bottom line'.
Anyways, I'm not going to continue this discussion - I said what I had to say, everyone is responsible for their own sanity and their 'carbon footprint'.
That a lot of Serbs are in denial, I can understand that. That a lot of them don't actually care at all of how many lives were lost in pursuit of their Greater Serbia, I can even understand that, because they apparently considered their victims as some kind of sub-humans.
But to say, that NATO broke international 'best practices', with your left side of the mouth, while justifying the actions of the "BUTCHER OF THE BALKANS" with your right side ... I don't even know how to wrap my mind around that one!
CREDIT WHERE IT IS DUE
dritan
Thank you for FINALLY giving me some reliable references.
As a Jew I can only be grateful for what anyone has done to save even one Jewish life, and apparently Albanians did a lot more than that. After seeing that they were recognized for it by Jews who knew what happened, it must be a fact. Thank you.
The reason I have been so strident is that our leaders, Clinton who got us into this mess and Bush who wants to perpetuate it, were and are so wrong to involve themselves as they have. Of course their mistakes don't make all Albanians bad (or all Serbs good). You will recall, I said that . . .
". . . despite all the Communist abuse, most people on both sides tried to deal with . . [the dispute between them] . . politically [i.e., maturely and rationally] until the Muslim terrorists [the KLA, a faction of the Albanian military] started shooting and blaming it on the Serbs.? the Serbs became defensive and the fighting was ultimately blamed on them.
I do realize that MOST people on both sides are decent human beings. However, I also realize that the KLA are radical Islamists who will now capitalize on the victory for their terrorism, handed them by Clinton and about to be ratified by Bush, to consolidate their gains and recruit more support. Remember that the Muslims of what is called "Palestine" were a lot less violent until the world intimidated Israel into giving them some autonomy and assisting Arrafat's terrorists to "govern" them. If you want to know where Albania is headed, look to the so-called "palestinians." If you want to know where Serbia and soon Macedonia, Greece, etc., are headed, look to Israel.
There is no such thing as a "secular" Muslim, at least not if the Islamists can help it anyway, and they WILL be radicalized, and are heading there at this very moment. You may not see it so clearly now, but you will.
And if you still doubt that then you should look at how Turkey, once the model "secular" ex-Muslim nation that was closer to America and Israel than it was to the Mullahs of hate, is now in a life and death struggle with Islamofascism, and has developed a most intimate and dangerous liason with Iran.
Albania is in an even more precarious situation than Turkey, because the terrorist KLA are so fundamental to it's present existence. It is at the very core of their being. Don't pretend they are irrelevant, for your own sake if no one else's.
No matter how you spin it, it is bad news not just for Israel, but for any nation which has to deal with seperatists and/or greedy neighbors.
So, my initial thesis stands. Clinton should not have been so eager to use force when diplomacy combined with suppression of the KLA would have been more effective.
And Bush shouldn't have got himself sucked into the mess Clinton made, because now he's going to be given the credit while Slick-Wiilley gets off, . . . yet again.
fin.
Kejda, perfect assessment. I've lived in Albania, Yugoslavia, and all over the Blakans. I have done ethnographic reasearch and must conclude that Kejda's description is the most accurate of the real situation, leaving the politics out of it. To everybody else i suggest spending about 20-30 yaers in the region seeing things first hand before they go on to amass tons of irrelevant and contradictory "information" of "reliable" foreign sources. Wanna know the truth, do the time on the ground with an open mind and no preconcived notions. Kejda, nice work. And praise to you for making your statement of how you know the situation to be and then keeping out of the endless "scholastic" argument between ytba and dritan which will resolve nothing because of the closed-mindedness and rigidity of their points of view. I sumbled upon this blog by chance and won't bothering visiting again so if you want to engegae in "argumntation" with me, your stuborn-headed comments will not affect me. Your relavance is worse than non-existent, because your arguments, espacially ytba's, show that he is just a psychotic with an inferiority complex, trying to make-up his lack of real world knowledge by endlessy arguing. My suggestion as stated previosly would be for him to go live several years in the countries concerned, and then report back his empirical observation, not unsubstantiated argumets. Clearly, Kejda is presenting an unbiased and empirically accurate portrait of the reality in Albania as I have witnessed and studied it myself. To label people as "terrorists" based on their religion or nationality is the biggest idiocy that the "informed" individuals in this blog have committeed. Anyway, my last word: let the inferiors argue and the superiors act.
I don't want to continue this any longer too, but a few quick points. Thank you ytba for recognizing the role of Albanians during the WWII, in saving Jews.
1. Regarding KLA being radical islamist. While there might have been a few mujahadin fighting in Bosnia, in Kosova's they were not. I never heard any religious rhetoric comming from KLA, and they have refuted any such links.
Krasniqi acknowledges that when the KLA faced total annihilation by Serb forces in September 1998, mujahedin groups did offer to travel to Kosovo to join the fight, but he says the KLA's military command decided to decline the offers.
"There has never been, nor will be, any organised mujahedin group in the ranks of the KLA, such a presence would damage our position. We were supported by the Americans and Europeans, whom we considered our allies. People should understand that we belong more to Western Europe that the Orient," he said, pointing out that the KLA included in its ranks volunteers from Sweden, Belgium, the UK, Germany and the US. In Macedonia, political representative of the NLA Ali Ahmeti also refutes allegations of mujahedin involvement in the Albanian guerrilla movement.
Here's another excellent analysis of the relationship between arab and balkan muslims.
Nevertheless KLA was disolved after the '99 war, they handed their weapons over to NATO and the organization ceased to exist. A few of their leaders entered politics, and have become successful politicians, such as PM Agim Ceku for example, and are working with the US and EU to make Kosova a western-style liberal democracy, open and equal to all its citizens. Ceku by the way is married to a catholic Croatian woman and had been a high ranking officer in the Croatian army, hardly possible had he been an islamist fanatic.
2. Is there a danger today in Albanian/Kosova from islamic radicals? For me it would be hard to imagine; of course we should never let our vigilance down towards any kind of extremism, but I know that the majority of Albanians look up to Europe not Asia for inspiration, and want their country and society to be an open, liberal and democratic one, and aspire to be part of EU and NATO soon.
Regards to all
just reminding a few nutters here that serbia was the cause of all the balkan mess during the last decade of the past century. they should have been in the eu now together with slovenia. instead they fucked it up big time by going back to their most primitive insticts of bigger serbia. bigger my arse! on the contrary, serbia is being reduced like a nokia phone. it gets smaller as time goes by. that's why i take pity on those small serb nationalists who in the future will end up having a country just the size of belgrade!!
zdravo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
O.k., I thought I was done here, but I found one more link that goes into sufficient detal and places the events in an historical perspective which is very helpful to understanding it.
It is also important to realize that what was done to the Serbs is the model upon which the Arabs current war against Israel is based, and by many of the same players in the same ways.
Here it is.
(And if that fellow "pal2u" is an "ethnographic reasearcher" then I am Donald Duck.)
Americans of my generation (I'm 25) know that it's only a matter of time before these people will hate us with pure venom. Just look at Germany and South Korea. We helped these countries become democracies, we helped them recover from war, we saved them from dictatorships, and we provided billions of dollars for rebuilding projects. What thanks do we get? A culture saturated with the most horrific images of the United States. It's only a matter of time before the Balkans do the same. Has anyone heard of the old saying "No good deed goes unpunished"??
hey ytba, your a retard
i dont care what your stupid links say, i was actually in bosnia during the war, and witnessed what happened, serbs raped and killed thousand of innocent people just because of their religion. they also killed thousands of innocent people, piled them on top of each other, and buried them all together, that is some of the most insane things i've ever seen
and it wasnt even a fair fight
when yugoslavia was still together, bosnia had pretty much no army, and the serbs were little pussies because all they did was get huge guns and placed them on top of hills and shot down on cities like sarajevo. the serbs raped, killed, and displaced thousands of people. what they did was horrible, not only to the people, but to the country. bosnia will probably never be like it used to be before the war. it was such a peaceful country, with muslims, croats, and serbs, all living together. peacefully. and then the croats, slovenians, and bosnians didnt want to be yugoslavia. but serbia coulnd't stand for that, so they had to come and FUCK EVERYTHING UP.
another thing i dont get:
why do they call them bosnian serbs and bosnian croats. if the serbs didnt like what was going on in bosnia, then they should go back to fucking serbia!!!!!
i think that its such bullshit, that most of the great powerhouse countries stood by and watched as the serbs destroyed a country that had a lot of hopes
Thanks, annonimoid, for showing how "rational" you can't be.
And, those poor poor Kosovars. How they "suffered." The only way they could make a living was to harvest Serb body parts, from kidnapped and murdered Serbs. Yeah, they deseve a state, all right, in hell.
EVIDENCE OF SLAUGHTER - OF SERBS BY MUSLIMS!
It's never too late to expose the Islamofascists lies, especially when they are so profound.
