A handout picture released by the US Army in Iraq shows Safi, a militant touted as Al-Qaeda in Iraq's emir of Mosul, who was killed in a shootout with Iraqi soldiers. Elsewhere, US soldiers arrested two of the extremist network's chieftains as a suicide car bomber struck police in one of the group's strongholds.(AFP/US Army)
Iraqi soldiers shot Safi and his two cohorts dead in Mosul after they spotted his car.
