Iraqis Vow to Punish Al Qaeda For Death of America's Ally

The Islamic State in Iraq took credit today for killing pro-Iraqi Sunni leader Abu Risha calling the death of the tribal leader a "heroic operation."

Mourners at the popular Sunni leader's funeral shouted "Al Qaeda is the enemy of Allah!". They vowed to take revenge on the Islamic terrorists for killing their young leader.

Abu Risha was buried beside his father and brother, both victims of Iraq's sectarian conflict.

The BBC reported:

Sunni Arab tribesmen have vowed revenge for the killing of a leader who had become a focal point for opposition to al-Qaeda in Iraq.

More than 1,500 mourners attended the funeral of Abdul Sattar Abu Risha, who was killed in a bomb attack in the city of Ramadi, Anbar province, on Thursday.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq said later in an internet statement that it had carried out the attack.

Iraq's national security adviser, interior minister and defence minister all attended the funeral in Ramadi, along with the second-in-command of US forces in Iraq, Lt-Gen Raymond Odierno.

The procession was guarded by scores of Iraqi police and US military personnel.

Mourners chanted "We will take our revenge" and "There is no God but Allah and al-Qaeda is the enemy of Allah" as the procession continued to the family cemetery.

Ahmed Abu Risha has been named as the tribal group's new leader after the death of his brother.

The Sunni leader's brother promised to avenge the death of Abu Risha:

Ahmed Abu Risha, the dead leader’s older brother, said he would continue his work, the Los Angeles Times reported. "We are going to continue our fight and avenge his death," he said.

Meanwhile- Sick liberals attack the dead Sunni leader simply because he was photgraphed with Bush.

Iraqis vow to avenge America's murdered ally

excerpts:

["We blame al-Qaeda and we are going to continue our fight and avenge his death," said Sheikh Ahmed al-Rishawi, another of the sheikh's brothers who was elected to lead the tribal coalition.

Nouri al-Maliki, the Iraqi prime minister, was represented at the funeral by his national security adviser, Muwaffaq al-Rubaie, who condemned the assassination. "It is a national Iraqi disaster. What Ab Risha did for Iraq, no single man has done in the country's history," Mr Rubaie told the mourners gathered at the sheikh's house. "We will support Anbar much more than before. Abu Risha is a national hero."]

["Abu Risha was a man who proved that terrorism can be fought and security can be restored even in the most volatile area in Iraq," said Sheikh Saleh al-Obeidi, al-Sadr's spokesman in the holy city of Najaf.]

AQ et als final miscalculation..

if they thought assassinating Sheikh Sattar would put an end to his successful attempts at unifying Iraq, they were so wrong.. what they have done is not only "solidify" the unification, but accelerated the pace..

Sattar was a threat to AQ et al in
life, now even moreso in death..

God Bless Sheikh Sattar (may he rest
in peace).. he will be sorely missed..

Not only a moment of unity, but the tribes are announcing something that we do not understand: the bad blood engendered by al Qaeda is now a personal affront to all the tribes.

If it were a feud between tribes internal or on the borders of Iraq, that would be one thing. This is not *that*: as an outsider, al Qaeda has fouled their relationship with the Anbari tribes. Tribes the world over tend to remember such feuds for generations... or longer... and act on them. There may be a spate of 'revenge killings' by the tribes of al Qaeda members and sympathizers, and most of that will be kept quiet. Bill Ardolino points that out with his reporting - that tribal matters stay with and between the tribes for local justice.
