This Day in US History... Dems Slaughter 300 Black Republicans

Grand Old Partisan reminds us of this sad day in American History:

On this day in 1868, a mob of Democrats massacred nearly 300 African-American Republicans in Opelousas, Louisiana.

The savagery began when racist Democrats attacked a newspaper editor, a white Republican and schoolteacher for ex-slaves. Several African-Americans rushed to the assistance of their friend, and in response, Democrats went on a "Negro hunt," killing every African-American (all of whom were Republicans) in the area they could fnd.
Emerson Bentley, the white man who was murdered, was editor of a Republican newspaper in the community.
Grand Old Partisan has more on this horrible slaughter of Republicans.

The KKK was a wing of the Demcratic party as southern dems rejected the outcome of the civil war. People need to remember that not only did America's main insurgency group come from the Democrats, so did racism. It was the Republicans who voted for the Voting Rigths Act of the 60's while more Democrats opposed it.

    But we're the racists.....

    1. Yes they did but it became somewhat useless with the help of the SCOTUS in 2013 giving about 19 GOP states to write some of their own voting procedures. And many Republicans were strong on racism. It didn't matter that both parties passed bills supposedly giving Black Americans Citizens rights, when many of the States oppose them. Sadly the 14th & 15th amendments was worthless. The white cops were both Republicans and Democrats that murdered many black citizens, sadly some were men and women wearing US Military uniform. None serve one day in jail. I suggest that Whites view the C-SPAN lectures about WWII & Civil Rights, you'll be amazed of the atrocities by white Americans on Blacks in the Military "https://www.c-span.org/video/?415058-1/world-war-ii-civil-rights" .

Truthfully, as a Black American, I think that we need to stop depending on white mainstream America to support us. We need to support ourselves and take pride in ourselves. Stop trying to appease white America. If white Republicans don't want our vote, so be it. Let's support a black conservative that stands for conservative values as well as economic independence for his/her people. White America has enough to deal with. Everyone hates them. We certainly don't want to be associate with that? Now do we?

I agree with most of what you stated but we can do a lot more together than separately. As a white conservative/libertarian, most minorities I meet still thoughtlessly support Obama, so we really have nothing to talk about politically. You have to make yourself known and I'm sure you will be welcomed once they get over the shock. :-) I see brilliant conservative blacks on the internet whom I would love to meet and work with but they are so few and far between that I'm afraid to bring up politics with anyone younger or of color because I usually run into a deaf zealot with whom a normal conversation is impossible. It's blind devotion like that which allowed Hitler to come to power and will allow our rights to be stripped from us.

I am a white conservative and I would certainly vote for a black conservative that stands for conservative values, etc. In a heartbeat I would!

    5. Black American Must form a BLACK Coalition of ALL organizations and black churches, etc. Such as the Hispanic and Latino. As Malcolm X tried to tell you in his Book "The Ballot or the Bullet" it seems that the Hispanic Coalition have read his book. The Black Coalition must aggressively register all Blacks of voting age to remove incumbents elective offices in local, state and Washington representatives and until we get representatives that will meet many of the Black American issues also. No politician will pay any attention to a group people who has a very dismal percentage record. This Coalition must NOT allow Willie Lynch thinking Blacks or Whites to impede its agenda. Voting for the President of the USA has NOT benefited Blacks in the last 3 decades or more.

I don't think " White People don't want your vote" I am white and I appreciate you but do you appreciate the white people who do care for you on the Rep side. Do you listen or are you rehearsing your hurts from the past. There is evil in the world of all color. Accept that and you begin to become free. I don't believe every black hates me although there are those who do. The white Quakers started the abolitionist movement in the 1600. They were good. The disabled people only got some rights to live in the middle of the 20th century. But I agree Blacks must stand individually for there communities. Forget government you are free men and life is tough injust. Lets fight against all forms of evil. So life can suck and life can be awesome. God does care and I am on the fight for disabled you on the fight for your culture. God bless us all.

oh yeah, by all means stay away from "white" Republicans.. i mean if it weren't for them, you'd probably still be paying homage to your rightful masters, the Dixicrats.. oh wait a sec, you are, only they're called Democrats these days, not only that, some of them are black, go figure..

    democrats returned them (lower haight)

Blacks might be surprised to compare
    Republican history with the Democrats’

    Deroy Murdock
    February 18, 2005
    excerpt:

Republicans also have supported legislation favorable to blacks, often against intense Democratic headwinds:

In 1865, Congressional Republicans unanimously backed the 13th Amendment, which made slavery unconstitutional. Among Democrats, 63 percent of senators and 78 percent of House members voted: "No."

In 1866, 94 percent of GOP senators and 96 percent of GOP House members approved the 14th Amendment, guaranteeing all Americans equal protection of the law. Every congressional Democrat voted: "No."

February 28, 1871: The GOP Congress passed the Enforcement Act, giving black voters federal protection.

February 8, 1894: Democratic President Grover Cleveland and a Democratic Congress repealed the GOP's Enforcement Act, denying black voters federal protection.

January 26, 1922: The U.S. House adopted Rep. Leonidas Dyer's (R., Mo.) bill making lynching a federal crime. Filibustering Senate Democrats killed the measure.

May 17, 1954: As chief justice, former three-term governor Earl Warren (R., Calif.) led the U.S. Supreme Court's desegregation of government schools via the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision. GOP President Dwight Eisenhower's Justice Department argued for Topeka, Kansas's black school children. Democrat John W. Davis, who lost a presidential bid to incumbent Republican Calvin Coolidge in 1924, defended "separate but equal" classrooms.

September 24, 1957: Eisenhower deployed the 82nd Airborne Division to desegregate Little Rock's government schools over the strenuous resistance of Governor Orval Faubus (D., Ark.).

May 6, 1960: Eisenhower signs the GOP's 1960 Civil Rights Act after it survived a five-day, five-hour filibuster by 18 Senate Democrats.

July 2, 1964: Democratic President Johnson signed the 1964 Civil Rights Act after former Klansman Robert Byrd's 14-hour filibuster and the votes of 22 other Senate Democrats (including Tennessee's Al Gore, Sr.) failed to scuttle the measure. Illinois Republican Everett Dirksen rallied 26 GOP senators and 44 Democrats to invoke cloture and allow the bill's passage. According to John Fonte in the January 9, 2003, National Review, 82 percent of Republicans so voted, versus only 66 percent of Democrats.

True, Senator Barry Goldwater (R., Ariz.) opposed this bill the very year he became the GOP's presidential standard-bearer. However, Goldwater supported the 1957 and 1960 Civil Rights Acts and called for integrating Arizona's National Guard two years before Truman desegregated the military. Goldwater feared the 1964 Act would limit freedom of association in the private sector, a controversial but principled libertarian objection rooted in the First Amendment rather than racial hatred.

June 29, 1982: President Ronald Reagan signed a 25-year extension of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The Republican party also is the home of numerous "firsts." Among them:

Until 1935, every black federal legislator was Republican. America's first black U.S. Representative, South Carolina's Joseph Rainey, and our first black senator, Mississippi's Hiram Revels, both reached Capitol Hill in 1870. On December 9, 1872, Louisiana Republican Pinckney Benton Stewart "P.B.S." Pinchback became America's first black governor.

August 8, 1878: GOP supply-siders may hate to admit it, but America's first black Collector of Internal Revenue was former U.S. Rep. James Rapier (R., Ala.).

October 16, 1901: GOP President Theodore Roosevelt invited to the White House as its first black dinner guest Republican educator Booker T. Washington. The pro-Democrat Richmond Times newspaper warned that consequently, "White women may receive attentions from Negro men." As Toni Marshall wrote in the November 9, 1995, Washington Times, when Roosevelt sought reelection in 1904, Democrats produced a button that showed their presidential nominee, Alton Parker, beside a white couple while Roosevelt posed with a white bride and black groom. The button read: "The Choice Is Yours."

GOP presidents Gerald Ford in 1975 and Ronald Reagan in 1982 promoted Daniel James and Roscoe Robinson to become, respectively, the Air Force's and Army's first black four-star generals.

November 2, 1983: President Reagan established Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday as a national holiday, the first such honor for a black American.

President Reagan named Colin Powell America's first black national-security adviser while GOP President George W. Bush appointed him our first black secretary of state.

President G.W. Bush named Condoleezza Rice America's first black female NSC chief, then our second (consecutive) black secretary of State. Just last month, one-time Klansman Robert Byrd and other Senate Democrats stalled Rice's confirmation for a week. Amid unanimous GOP support, 12 Democrats and Vermont Independent James Jeffords opposed Rice — the most "No" votes for a State designee since 14 senators frowned on Henry Clay in 1825.

"The first Republican I knew was my father, and he is still the Republican I most admire," Rice has said. "He joined our party because the Democrats in Jim Crow Alabama of 1952 would not register him to vote. The Republicans did. My father has never forgotten that day, and neither have I."

Maybe next time Herbert really wants to help out the blacks in this country, he will condemn the party with the only former (6) Ku Klux Klan Kleagle sitting in the US Senate.

If he really wanted to be honest and cared about helping blacks, that would be a good start.]

    what the heck, another excerpt:

The House Policy Committee's 2005 Republican Freedom Calendar offers 365 examples of GOP support for women, blacks, and other minorities, often over Democratic objections. Among its highlights:

"To stop the Democrats' pro-slavery agenda, anti-slavery activists founded the Republican party, starting with a few dozen men and women in Ripon, Wisconsin on March 20, 1854," the calendar notes. "Democratic opposition to Republican efforts to protect the civil rights of all Americans lasted not only throughout Reconstruction, but well into the 20th century. In the south, those Democrats who most bitterly opposed equality for blacks founded the Ku Klux Klan, which operated as the party's terrorist wing."

Contemporary partisan hyperbole? Consider this 1866 comment from Governor Oliver Morton (R., Ind.), who is immortalized in the U.S. Capitol's Statuary Hall: "Every one who shoots down Negroes in the streets, burns Negro school-houses and meeting-houses, and murders women and children by the light of their own flaming dwellings, calls himself a Democrat," Morton said. "Every New York rioter in 1863 who burned up little children in colored asylums, who robbed, ravished, and murdered indiscriminately in the midst of a blazing city for three days and nights, calls himself a Democrat."

White supremacists worked club in hand with Democrats for decades:

May 22, 1856: Two years after the Grand Old party's birth, U.S. Senator Charles Sumner (R., Mass.) rose to decry pro-slavery Democrats. Congressman Preston Brooks (D., S.C.) responded by grabbing a stick and beating Sumner unconscious in the Senate chamber. Disabled, Sumner could not resume his duties for three years.

July 30, 1866: New Orleans's Democratic government ordered police to raid an integrated GOP meeting, killing 40 people and injuring 150.

September 28, 1868: Democrats in Opelousas, Louisiana killed nearly 300 blacks who tried to foil an assault on a Republican newspaper editor.

October 7, 1868: Republicans criticized Democrats' national slogan: "This is a white man's country: Let white men rule."

April 20, 1871: The GOP Congress adopted the Ku Klux Klan Act, banning the pro-Democrat domestic terrorist group.

October 18, 1871: GOP President Ulysses S. Grant dispatched federal troops to quell Klan violence in South Carolina.

September 14, 1874: Racist white Democrats stormed Louisiana's statehouse to oust GOP Governor William Kellogg's racially integrated administration; 27 are killed.

August 17, 1937: Republicans opposed Democratic President Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Supreme Court nominee, U.S. Senator Hugo Black (D., Al.), a former Klansman who defended Klansmen against race-murder charges.

February 2005: The Democrats' Klan-coddling today is embodied by KKK alumnus Robert Byrd, West Virginia's logorrheic U.S. senator and, having served since January 3, 1959, that body's dean. Thirteen years earlier, Byrd wrote this to the KKK's Imperial Wizard: "The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia." Byrd led Senate Democrats as late as December 1988. On March 4, 2001, Byrd told Fox News's Tony Snow: "There are white niggers. I've seen a lot of white niggers in my time; I'm going to use that word." National Democrats never have arranged a primary challenge against or otherwise pressed this one-time cross-burner to get lost.

Contrast the KKKozy Democrats with the GOP. When former Klansman David Duke ran for Louisiana governor in 1991 as a Republican, national GOP officials scorned him. Local Republicans endorsed incumbent Democrat Edwin Edwards, despite his ethical baggage. As one Republican-created bumper sticker pleaded: "Vote for the crook: It's important!"

hey, ya never know, some "white"
    Republicans might get educated..

lets see where do I start? So the voting laws being created around the country are helping Black Americans? The dixiecrats being absorbed into the republican party was very helpful to Black Americans. That's how you reach out to a group of people that have been marginalized, brutalized, treated as second class citizens, had legislation created to keep them out of the economy and unable to exercise their political and human rights as stated by the constitution and not been allowed to vote. I could go on...The history you site may be true, but every time I go on one of these sites to address the historic issues from the past history that have created the conditions Black Americans find themselves in today the republicans tell me to get over it, its the past. So sir, the things you mention are in the past. When Senator John McCain filibustered the Martin Luther King Holiday, Arizona for many years did not observe the holiday, I had to ask myself how racist are you, and this is a great way to get Black Americans to support your party and its ideology.

bg: Lincoln loathe Black people he didn't even want them on the US soil, he only used them to fight for Tariff. The GOP hid behind the blacks while Northern & Southern fought in the Civil War. The Southern wanted free foreign trade but the Northerns didn't Bcuz they had manufacturers where the Southerner had farmland.

So when did the GOP change and thus become loathed by African Americans and why hasn't the true story been advanced to show African Americans a history they may not know about. To me The GOP just gave up trying to include African Americans in their party. Big Mistake, I don't know. Can someone enlighten me and pinpoint when The African American Community began hating the GOP.

GOP never abandoned African Americans, instead African Americans abandoned the GOP.

Republicans let blacks join their party in the 1850's, elected the first to Congress in 1860. Dems didn't let blacks join their party until 1925 and didn't elect one to Congress until 1935. Says a lot. Dems filibustered and lost the battles to defeat both the Voting Rights Act of '57 and Civil Rights Act of '64. Dems then went on a PR blitz claiming credit to secure the voting block, which also let them continue keeping them under their thumbs.

GOP later pushed through Welfare Reform even though Clinton threatened to veto it. Welfare Reform pumped billions $$ into education funding, daycare, and incentives for recipients to enter the job market and Dems called it racist. Barack Obama himself was elected on the promise to repeal welfare reform - he was elected on the promise to strip education benefits from the poor. Dems elected him for that promise....go figure.

And even as late as 2009 Dems lost yet another bid to repeal the Civil Rights Act when they argued before the Supreme Court they had the right to base hiring and promotions for municipal jobs strictly on the color of a man's skin. The case was triggered when CT firefighters were denied promotions because not enough minority officers passed a NAACP sanctioned exam (white and hispanics were denied promotions because they weren't black). As an appeals court judge Sotomayor supported the repeal and was personally singled out and lambasted in the eventual Supreme Court decision. Not surprisingly, it was a 5-4 decision - the five judges who ruled against institutionalized racism were the five conservatives on the court.

So no, the GOP never abandoned African Americans. They still continue to fight for them knowing full well Dems will take all the credit. Yet they still fight for them. Says a lot about which party has morals...and well, the other sells baby body parts so 'nuff said.

Just look at how African American Republicans are treated. They get called Uncle Toms, "traitors to their kind", tokens, and all sorts of other nasty names. It's 2015 and Democrats STILL think they own black people.

The best analogy for Dems vs. Republicans when it comes to helping African Americans - give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach him to fish and you feed him for life. Dems are handing out fish, Republicans give fishing lessons.
