The New York Times Mourns the Loss of Their "Defining Atrocity"
The New York Times can't be satisfied with some insignificant Al-Qaeda atrocity.
It must be an atrocity committed by the Americans.
And, they lost it this week in Haditha.

The Haditha Marines
The New York Times
May 26, 2006:
A military investigation into the deaths of two dozen Iraqis last November is expected to find that a small number of marines in western Iraq carried out extensive, unprovoked killings of civilians, Congressional, military and Pentagon officials said Thursday...The New York Times
That evidence, described by Congressional, Pentagon and military officials briefed on the inquiry, suggested to one Congressional official that the killings were "methodical in nature."
June 4, 2006:
The apparent cold-blooded killing last November of 24 Iraqi civilians by United States marines at Haditha will be hard to dispose of with another Washington damage control operation. The Iraqi government has made clear that it will not sit still for one, and neither should the American people. This affair cannot simply be dismissed as the spontaneous cruelty of a few bad men.The New York Times
This is the nightmare that everyone worried about when the Iraq invasion took place. Critics of the war predicted that American troops would become an occupying force, unable to distinguish between innocent civilians and murderous insurgents, propelled down the same path that led the British to disaster in Northern Ireland and American troops to grief in Vietnam.
December 22, 2006
Though this was not the first instance of American forces being charged with killing Iraqi civilians, the charges announced yesterday, including 13 counts of murder against one sergeant alone, Staff Sgt. Frank Wuterich, 26, suggest that military prosecutors view the Haditha killings as being among the most serious breaches of military rules in the nearly four-year war.The New York Times
October 6, 2007
Last year, when accounts of the killing of 24 Iraqis in Haditha by a group of marines came to light, it seemed that the Iraq war had produced its defining atrocity, just as the conflict in Vietnam had spawned the My Lai massacre a generation ago. That's The New York Times special way of saying "I'm sorry" for condemning the Haditha Marines to hell for the "apparent" cold-blooded murder of innocents before their trial even started.
But on Thursday, a senior military investigator recommended dropping murder charges against the ranking enlisted marine accused in the 2005 killings, just as he had done earlier in the cases of two other marines charged in the case. The recommendation may well have ended prosecutors’ chances of winning any murder convictions in the killings of the apparently unarmed men, women and children.
And, isn't it interesting how The New York Times is still searching for an atrocity to define the War in Iraq?
An Al-Qaeda atrocity like the Yazidi bombings, the murder of a brave young Sunni Sheik, torture chamber drawings, or dismembering and booby-trapping dead soldier's bodies just won't do.
It must be an American atrocity.
Sometimes it's hard to figure out just who they are rooting for.
Democracy Project thinks The New York Times has just excused itself.

But how, why, and by whose authority was My Lai the "defining" atrocity of Vietnam?
That My Lai was an atrocity, and that it was committed by Americans, no one disputes. But in what way did it "define" the Vietnam war? That's the premise that the New York Times would like us to accept without question.
The contempt the lefty, anti-Americans have for our country, and those who rise to defend it and them knows no human bounds. The bile rises in my throat every time their unrepentant rationalizations are expressed. The democrats know no shame.
"Sometimes it's hard to figure out just who they are rooting for."
No, no it's not.
They have been rooting for the bad guys since 1968, if memeory serves.
"Sometimes it's hard to figure out just who they are rooting for."
You're kidding, right?
The New York Times --
Foolin' some of the People
ALL of the time.
The New York Times: "All the News that Fits, We Print."
Well I beg to differ.
Haditha IS the defining atrocity of this war.
What other event best illustrates the method and mindset of the media in this war?
Not Abu Ghraib. Which though 'sexy' for having lotsa pictures for the media to 'explain' for us, was still not quite right for the frame they needed.
No PTS victims rabidly devouring innocents. Too many woman directly responsible. Not Hollywood enough at all.
No, what they needed was a Duke Lacrosse team for the WOT.
And in Haditha they thought they had it. Classic "Rush to Judgement' style.
All the news that's Fit to print indeed.
That should be "All the news that fits The Narrative."
The way that My Lai becomes the defining event of the Vietnam war happens later. It happens in my High Schooler's history book. When I looked at the section of those years, My Lai was the only thing mentioned about Vietnam. More Indoctrination than you can shake a stick at. My kid knows the difference, because I tell him, and my Vietnam Veteran husband tells him too. What about your kid?
Weeeeeee!
Haditha was TEH AWESOME!111!!!!!!! We need more Hadithas!
In your face NYT!
Kill 'em all, let God sort 'em out!
USA! USA! USA! USA! USA!
Blue captures perfectly the caricature of our soldiers that lives in the hearts of the NYT's editors.
Well done Blue!
It must be awful to live in a world with nothing good to say about the country, its leaders or citizens. Being surrounded by fellow "America-the-Ugly" people all the time would lead to a horrible mood if one didn't already have it...
So much negativity is not good for the spirit. It can lead to poor decisions and poor choices in friends...
I like my America-the-Beautiful filled with occasionally silly people and a spirit of helpful co-operation towards the whole world. I like my nation where no burden is too heavy, no struggle to great to being peace and freedom to countries of the world...
I wouldn't like to live in a NYTimes world... Too bad so many do.
Blue captures perfectly the caricature of our soldiers that lives in the hearts of the NYT's editors.
Er, that comment was directed, obviously, at GP and Instapundit, which would've been clear to anyone with a reading comprehension level over 6th grade.
Nice try conflating these two 101st Keyboarders with the troops, though. Yeah, we never see that on the right!
Blue Texan,
You were understood perfectly.
OK, Blue Copperhead, back in your hole.
Isn't it funny that Blue Texan thinks us incapable of grasping his "teh special logic" (misspelling intended) while at the same time displaying a thorough misunderstanding of this post.
I'm not sure when the change occurred but the lack of teh smart on the Left is puzzling. It's most especially so when viewed alongside the moral preening and misplaced sense of moral superiority.
Rhymes with "Nifong"
What struck me about that article was how much the Times was trying to spin this as the result of a failure to properly investigate the allegations. The Times seemed to suggest that, had things been done properly, these Marines would have never seen the light of day again.
We loath the military who want to protect the USA. We progressives at the NYT want to protect the world from the USA.
Why did the Marines initally LIE about the deaths?
FYI, I have an update on one of the Marines in your picture at the top of the article.
All charges against Capt.Luke McConnell were dropped before they could hold a preliminary hearing.
http://edition.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/meast/09/18/iraq.haditha/
I've met Luke several times (one of my closest friends serves as an officer with him in the Marines).
Luke was the CO of the troops involved, but was not on the scene at the time of the shootings. He arrived later and accurately reported that civilians had been killed.
I have been told that he was not responsible to investigate further, and his report made it to the top of the chain of command. Nevertheless, the Marines charged him with dereliction of duty for failing to investigate.
As demonstrated by the fact Luke never even faced a hearing on the charges before they were dropped, the charges baseless.
What part of, we followed the ROE, was a lie? If they lied how did the charges come to be dropped?
You know steve j, you should really try to stop lying about people.
No, no, Stevie's correct, a Marine did lie about Haditha. His name just happened to be Jack Murtha.

don't believe they did..

It's very simple folks. Follow the NY Slimes lib logic:
Wars are by definition, attrocities.
We are at war in Iraq.
Therefore,
We are commiting attrocities in Iraq.
All the Slimes needs do is search out that "defining" illustration of this (on their view)simple analyitic truth.
Now, some seem mystified by the fact that the Slimes does not seem to count AQ beheadings, kidnappings, and torturing as 'defining' attrocities'. This too is simple to explain:
These folks are not making war, for they are not ultimately responsible for their actions. Only people who freely choose to their actions can go to war. These poor misguided souls are in fact objects of pity, similar to people that were beaten and abused by their parents who become criminals. They lash out only because they know nothing else. They are stunted, emotionally damaged, not truly autonomous agents. The real fault lies with their oppressors, the 'parent' that beat the snot out of them. So we cannot hold these poor children to as high a moral standard as we can our own military. Oh..and by the way, the oppressors, the big bad parents? Yes, you guessed it. US.
Note for Mr. von Zielbauer, as others have noted, My Lai is more like two generations ago. See a doctor, Paul, Altzheimer's can be treated. Otherwise, FTA The recommendation may well have ended prosecutors’ chances of winning any murder convictions in the killings of the apparently unarmed men, women and children. Remember the old presumption of innocence stuff, Paul? The investigation is a process and if it is flawed, no conclusion is possible. This is just mental masturbation by the slimes. Yet again I am forced to conclude that had al Quaida flown a stolen passenger-less airplane into the Times building, we should have given them a bye. And if a board meeting was in session, a medal.
"That My Lai was an atrocity, and that it was committed by Americans, no one disputes"...
Well I for one thought Lt. Calley actions were part of war, real war and not this politically correct crapola that libtards and fools want to foist off on us today...
Then you would think wrong. Do us a favor and find a career in a cubicle, not a on the battlefield. We need - and have - more soldiers like WO Thompson.
As for the moonbats still trying to pile on the Marines, the charges came to a screeching halt because it turns out there was UAV footage of the entire incident. Done, end of story.
Whenever the NYT is listed as a source...we know its garbage.
I don't trust them to report the ball scores accurately.
dung.
Anon@12:28, I would have hoped that the Marine Corps had excommunicated him by now, severing his association with the Corps forever.
No A @ 8:20 AM, YOU would be wrong but if you ever got out of your mom's basement you would know that...
How often do you read history and come back with zero comprehension for the lessons of history?
Quite often it seems...
A new motto for the NYT: When news breaks, we fix it.
It's True:
Murtha did lie.
But he's corrupt enough to qualify for long term membership among the DC Elite.
No Good Marine goes unharassed
