Muslim Helped Save Jews During Subway Hanukkah Beatdown

"A random Muslim guy jumped in and helped a Jewish guy on Hanukkah - that's a miracle."

Hassan Askari from Bangladesh jumped to Walter Adler's aid while a group of thugs allegedly pummeled and taunted him on a New York subway this weekend.

The two new pals - Adler, 23, (on left) with a broken nose and a fat lip, and Askari, 20, (on right) with two black eyes - broke bread together and laughed off the bruises the night after they were jumped.

(This video is amazing!)

A Muslim man jumped in to help four Jews who were victims of an anti-Semitic attack on a subway in New York this weekend.
The New York Post reported:

A Brooklyn man whose "Happy Hanukkah" greeting landed him in the hospital said he was saved from a gang of Jew-bashing goons aboard a packed Q train by a total stranger - a modest Muslim from Bangladesh.

Walter Adler was touched that Hassan Askari jumped to his aid while a group of thugs allegedly pummeled and taunted him and his three friends. So Adler has invited his new friend over to celebrate the Festival of Lights.

The two new pals - Adler, 23, with a broken nose and a fat lip, and Askari, 20, with two black eyes - broke bread together and laughed off the bruises the night after the fisticuffs.

"A random Muslim guy jumped in and helped a Jewish guy on Hanukkah - that's a miracle," said Adler, an honors student at Hunter College.

"He's basically a hero. Hassan jumped in to help us."

But Askari, who is studying to be an accountant, shrugged off the praise.

"I just did what I had to do," he recalled. "My parents raised me that way."

The 10 subway passengers wished the Jews "Happy Hanukkah" before they beat them down.
Haaretz reported:

Four Jewish subway riders who wished other people Happy Hanukkah were pelted with anti-Semitic remarks before being beaten, New York police and prosecutors said. The incident was being investigated as a possible hate crime.

The four were on a train in Manhattan on Friday night, during the eight-day Jewish Festival of Lights, when they were approached by a group of 10 people who offered holiday greetings. The victims responded, Happy Hanukkah and were assaulted by the larger group, police said Tuesday.

Police caught up with the train in Brooklyn and arrested eight men and two women, ages 19 and 20. They were arraigned Saturday on charges of assault, menacing, riot, harassment and disorderly conduct, the Brooklyn district attorney's office said.

The case was being handled by the office's civil rights bureau, and charges could be upgraded to hate crimes, prosecutors said. The two men and two women who were attacked had bruises and welts on their faces and heads but were not hospitalized, police said.

One of the men charged, Joseph Jirovec, pleaded guilty last year to attempted robbery as a hate crime and was awaiting sentencing, prosecutors said. Jirovec, who is white, was part of a group that yelled racial epithets and assaulted two black teenagers in Brooklyn, prosecutors said.

It is too bad there is likely no way to keep tabs on Askari (sp). I am very curious to see how the muslim community treats him after this event.

The New York Post quotes thug-with-priors Jirovec: "I'm trying to stay out of trouble," he said."I want to straighten out everything in my life. When I get out, I want to go into the military."

Yeah, sure. That's one ambition that's not going to go very far.

@ Otter

I'm guessing his friends and family will commend him for a good deed. Perhaps if he's vain he'll use it to pick up a girl someday, no different from your average american don't you think?

Your comments based on the false assumption that Islam is fundamentally at odds with Judaism and therefore he'd be condemned for helping a Jew. Not true.

The fact that the man was Muslim shouldn't even matter, just that he jumped in to help another human being out.

Well ... you know when our country has gone to the dogs when it's the good ol American Christians who pervert the meaning of the season by inciting violence.

BTW: There was a time in history when Muslims and Jews actually live side-by-side in relative harmony. The the Christian crusaders came in and screwed everything up, destroying price art and burning libraries of irreplaceable knowledge. I'm pretty secular in my beliefs and have noticed a backwards trend in the U.S. to embrace evangelical Christianity. It would be a shame if fascist theocracy took over our government. We'd be no better than the Taliban.

BG proves my point ... not only does he ramble, but he uses profanity. And if you read the article, the "thugs" did make references to the Jews Killing Jesus. Doesn't get much more religious than that.

Thank BG, your colorful language is a fine example of the regression of online conversation where some people become unable to communicate like human beings. Go on BG ... what othe expletives do you have to show off.

An African Asks Some Disturbing Questions of Islam

excerpt:

[These three Christian countries, from 300 A.D. to 1500 A.D. had their own written language, great centers of learning, international commerce with Egypt, Ethiopia and other Middle East states, and sent out missionaries to other African states (see K. Milhalowski,Faras, vol.2, Poland, 1965 for extensive archaeological and historical documentation on these states).

Even the Arab, ibn Selim al-Assuani, was impressed when he saw Soba, describing it as having, ...fine buildings, roomy houses, churches, and the land is more fruitful than Makuria...[and it has] much meat, and good horses.

But all this was destroyed by Muslim invaders in 1275 A.D., not European colonialists! The same type of massive destruction happened all over Africa, yet we never hear anyone holding the Muslims responsible! Why? Arab Muslim racism is just as obnoxious as that of the Europeans, so why is it allowed to continue?]

apologies to all for going so far OT..

"There was a time in history when Muslims and Jews actually live side-by-side in relative harmony."

EVERYTHING IS RELATIVE...

"MYTH

"Jews who lived in Islamic countries were well-treated by the Arabs."

FACT

While Jewish communities in Islamic countries fared better overall than those in Christian lands in Europe, Jews were no strangers to persecution and humiliation among the Arabs. As Princeton University historian Bernard Lewis has written:"

Also, you won't get very far reasoning with bg, he's a 'believer,' which is OK if one's belief is well founded, but if it's just because that's what tweaks his fancy this week (not because he's carefully thought it through) then who knows what side of the fence he'll be on next week. Generally, the louder one yells at one's "friend" (theoretically on the same side as himself), the less likely he is really on their side.

But, from what else you say, I'm guessing you probably already know that.

"A Muslim-American saved us when our own people were on the train and didn't do anything," Adler said.

Who exactly are "our own people"? Was he talking about other Jews on the train? Or perhaps only non-Muslim Americans count as "our own people"?

This Adler guy sounds like he has his own bias issues.

In brief ... under the rule of Caliph Omar, Jerusalem was shared by all faiths ... until the craders paid a visit.

The Muslim faith, in general, has gotten a bad rap from desperate extremist groups, but the core of the faith is the same with any other. Askari is one example, but why should it surprise anyone that a human being is able to come to the aid of another ... regardless of religious differences.

We seem to think that a "typical" Muslim normally wouldn't perform such an act ... that's ignorant.

you are correct ... at least you bring clarity. Unfortunately, status quo does determine who gets the best seat in the theater. But at least under a good leader, efforts could be made to bring "harmony" to the people. It's relative yeah, and in the past it seemed the Jewish people got caught in some crossfire.

Thanks for making a civilized argument. :)

AN ANECDOTE ABOUT GOOD MUSLIMS

I have a Jewish friend from the old Soviet empire who's car got stuck very late at night in an unlit backwoods area of some Regurgistan(I dont't remember which one)somewhere over there. He was with his brother-in-law, and they went out to the main highway to see if they could get help. This was risky, because there were terrorists roaming those parts at that time, just out to kill the "other" guys.

They flagged down the first car, and two fellows got out, one of them being nearly 7 feet tall. The guys who stopped were a little suspicious (gee, I wonder why) but they agreed to help. They were both Muslims, and they stopped helped a couple of strangers, at risk of their own lives since they didn't know my friend was harmless, who turned out to be Jews.

It gets better. One of the Muslims got upset because he recognized the car and thought these two might have stolen it. He had been good friends with the owner of the car. After some tense questioning, everyone realized they could trust each other when it was revealed that the owner of the car was my friend's father.

But, the point is that even in the most seemingly G-d forsaken wilderness, there ARE good people, and some happen to be Muslims.

POSTSCRIPT. My friend now practices Medicine in the US, but as we see from the incident on the train, attacks can happen anywhere, even here, and even by those who one might think more trustworthy than those who actually were.

The bottom line is that if G-d want's to help you, you will be helped; and if not, nothing you can do, and nowhere you try to hide, will be able to change that.

I think that It is a very sad time in our world and In our country when people are shocked by a person doing a kind and human thing, based solely on the religious beliefs of that person at the same time I am glad to see that news is being less biased based solely on religious believes. I also think that if you really look into most relgins that they do have a civl code of conduct and it does not involve not helping someone simply because their beliefs are different then yours. I am a Unitarian for the record.

bg,
Ignore him. The rest of us will.
Attacks against Christianity are popular in some circles. If you have to bring up the crusades to prove your point, it's rather a mute point.
As a New Yorker, I can tell you, you can find the best examples of humanity and the worse, within the city confines.
New York City has a population of over 8 million. In the metro area, it's 20 million. So think of where you live, if you can find a few jerks, multiply ours by 10.
Am I surprised that a group of teens attacked a man simply because he is Jewish? If you watch the news in the city, you will find that some groups of teens need no reason to attack. They are just looking for trouble.
Thank you to Hassan and others, who step forward everyday to give us the examples of the best of humanity.
