Syria Jails Democracy Activists on International Human Rights Day
The Assad Regime celebrated International Human Rights Day by arresting democracy protesters.
AFP reported:
Syria issued summonses and arrested dozens of opposition activists, including the brother of political prisoner Anwar Bunni, during International Human Rights Day, human rights groups said on Tuesday.Anwar Bunni was arrested immediately following the trip by Nancy Pelosi to visit the Assad regime in Damascus.
Authorities acted on Sunday and continued targetting opponents on Monday, the anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, rights campaigners said.
The crackdown targetted around 30 people who signed the 2005 Damascus Declaration calling for "radical change" in Syria and took part in a 163-person protest held on December 1, the groups continued.
Security officials visited the home of writer and protester Akram Bunni, who was elected as secretary of the National Declaration of Damascus Council on December 1, the rights groups and a member of his family added.
In April, his brother, human rights lawyer Anwar Bunni, was jailed for five years after signing the declaration on relations between Lebanon and Syria, its former powerbroker.

Image released by his family Tuesday April 24 2007 shows one of Syria's most vocal human rights activists, lawyer Anwar al-Bunni as he talks on his cell phone in Damascus in this February 21, 2006 file photo. A Syrian court sentenced al-Bunni to five years in prison on April 24, 2007 for criticizing government policy towards Lebanon.(AP).

HAPPY INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS DAY!!
Dismay Over New U.N. Human Rights Council
U.N. Further Weakens Human Rights Council
excerpt:
[Conclusion
The United States was one of only four countries that voted against the General Assembly resolution that created the Council. The U.S. was concerned that the Council lacked the measures necessary to prevent it from repeating the worst mistakes of the Commission it was created to replace. The deplorable record of the Council has validated both the United States' concerns and its decision not to run for a seat on the Council in 2006 and in 2007.]

btw.. i hope this doesn't detract from the fact that there doesn't have to be a special day to beat on Democracy advocates, not to mention anyone who speaks out against the house of Assad..
btw.. i believe both Syria & Cuba (i believe both also had turns chairing it at one time) sit on the UN Human Rights Commission, not to mention Iran, China, etc.. go figure.. *sigh*

The United Nations, and the councils associated with it, are collectively impotent for a number of reasons, most notably the reality that countries on the security council like Russia and China use it as a tool to check the expansion of democracy and freedom. The "Human Rights" councils have been littered with laughable regimes that support oppression, genocide, mass murder, terrorism and authoritarianism.
I always have to laugh when some bozo fires off a salvo aimed at the U.S. with regards to taking action without a UN mandate (ie. Iraq).
The UN wasn't on board stopping Milosovic's slaughter of Muslims, weren't on board stopping Hussein's mass murder of Muslims, and hasn't been on board with stopping any of a number of genocides in Rwanda, Somalia, Congo or the Sudan.
The UN is a debate club, that's it. It's a platform for third world despots to seemingly stand on equal footing with countries that have actually done something for humanity. It provides nutcases like Ahmadinejad the opportunity to fantasize about glowing in front of world leaders as he holds them in a trance.
What a joke.
