Obama's Foreign Policy Ideas a Huge Hit... In Iran!

Messiah frenzy hits Mullacracy.

"Change!"

Iran Press TV points to hopeful signs in the horizon, via HotAir:

Senator Barack Obama promises to hold direct talks with Iran and Syria in a bid to stabilize the Middle East if elected president.

In an interview with France's Paris Match, the Democratic presidential hopeful said he would also hold a summit with Muslim state leaders to address the growing gap between the West and the world of Islam.

The Illinois Senator added that to repair the image of the United States in the world he would have to 'put an end to the war in Iraq'.

"Occupying the country has put the odds against us with the world," Obama expounded.
There's a reason that Obama is being called the black Jimmy Carter.

Why do I have a feeling that talking with Syria and Iran equals selling Lebanon?

Carl in Jerusalem,

The fate of Lebanon and Israel is one. They are both countries that the Arab and Islamic states have tried to wipe out, albeit using different methods. Obama would sell Lebanon and that would result in Syrian occupation and Hezbollah being stronger than ever, therefore threatening Israel. This is what happened when George Bush Sr. Let's learn from the mistakes of the past for the sake of the USA, Lebanon, Israel, and all peace-loving people of the Middle East.

Heaven forbid someone would try have a dialogue with leaders of Muslim states! Imagine the horrors of people attempting to bridge the gap between them... the sky is falling, the sky is falling.

It is way, way better for us to just bomb them... that's what Jesus would have done.

that's right, bg, iran didn't offer to help the US in the Iraq situation, an offer which we rebuffed. ahmadenijad didn't send a letter to bush to try to open a dialogue.

you can ignore it all you want but we created this problem w/ iran by shutting the door when it had the possibility of being open.

what the US wants is for Iran to agree to our demands in order to have dialogue, when the goal of dialogue is to get our demands met. If Iran already meets our demands w/o talks, what the F is the point of the talks???

the US may have rebuffed some advances of so called "talks" with Iran.. don't know what papers you've been reading, but they obviously not only left out the reasoning, but the context of the matter, not to mention Iran's stance..

besides, you have it a tad bass ackwards anyways.. Iran refused to talk to US re: it's nukes.. as far as either countries setting demands for talks re: Iraq goes..

the main obstacle was Iran's refusal to talk with US w/o having it's demands met first..

Iran no longer willing to talk with U.S.

excerpt:

[Despite repeated offers from the United States, Iran has refused to set a new date for further talks between the two countries in Baghdad, U.S. and Iraqi officials said Thursday.

The U.S. and Iranian ambassadors held three meetings last August in an effort to defuse tensions, but since then Iran has backed out of a follow-up session on three occasions, Iraqi officials said.]

Iran, U.S. willing to talk about Iraq

excerpt:

[The White House said it was prepared to discuss Iraq with Tehran, but topics must be limited to that subject and not Iran's nuclear program, The Associated Press reported.]

["We will appoint a negotiating team for talks soon," he said.

Al-Hakim made his request during an address Wednesday on a Shiite television station, the news agency reported.

"I demand the leadership in Iran to open a clear dialogue with America about Iraq," AP quoted al-Hakim as saying.

"It is in the interests of the Iraqi people that such dialogue is opened and to find an understanding on various issues."]

US Rules Out Direct Talks With Iran On Nuclear Standoff

excerpt:

[The United States on Thursday ruled out any direct discussions with Iran on the nuclear standoff after the Islamic republic offered to negotiate with Washington on another thorny subject -- Iraq.

On the same day of the release of a key study pinpointing Iran as the United States' biggest threat, the White House said any talks between the US and Iran on efforts to stabilize Iraq would not take up the nuclear crisis or other disputes and that negotiators would have a "very narrow mandate."]

yeah, we're constantly refusing to "talk" to Iran.. NOT!! go figure..

Iran has been defying, and is still in defiance of the UN.. iow: the entire Global Community, not just the US..

Iran still defying UN over uranium enrichment: IAEA (5/07)

excerpts:

[VIENNA (AFP) — Iran persists in defying UN demands to stop enriching uranium and is expanding the work, the UN nuclear watchdog said in a report Wednesday that could open the door to new sanctions against Tehran.

"Iran has not suspended its enrichment related activities," the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said of Iranian compliance with a UN call in March, including the imposition of sanctions, to stop enrichment work, which makes fuel for civilian reactors but also atom bomb material.

Iran has also failed to give the cooperation IAEA inspectors need to "provide assurances about ... the exclusively peaceful nature" of Iran's nuclear program, the IAEA said.]

[The IAEA assessment "is a laundry list of Iran's continued defiance of the international community and shows that Iran's leaders are only furthering the isolation of the Iranian people," he said.]

IAEA sees progress but says Iran still enriching uranium (11/07)

excerpts:

[However, "the agency's knowledge about Iran's current nuclear programme is diminishing," said the report.

Last week, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Iran had reached a key target of 3,000 centrifuges enriching uranium, which is the number sufficient to produce enough enriched uranium in one year to make a single nuclear bomb.

And for the first time, a senior UN official confirmed Tehran's claim.]

[In Vienna, the US ambassador to the IAEA, Gregory Schulte, said Iran had "failed the test of full disclosure."

The IAEA report "shows that Iran's cooperation with the IAEA remains selective and incomplete," Schulte said.]
