South Carolina Republican Primary-- McCain Up- Thompson Down? Hunter Out!... Update: McCain Wins!
The polls just closed in South Carolina and its too close to call.
FOX News has - McCain at 38%, Huckabee at 23%. They showed Mitt Romney with 19 percent, Fred Thompson with 12 percent, Rudy Giuliani with 5 percent and Ron Paul with 4 percent.
** Fred Thompson is now speaking in South Carolina.
Captain's Quarters asks, "Has the Thompson Surge Arrived?"
...According to FOX News reporter Molly Henneberg at Fred HQ- "No."
Powerline has the numbers from the exit polls in South Carolina where McCain and Huckabee are battling for the win.
FOX News reporter Molly Henneberg says the mood at the Thompson room was "like a funeral." She said that Thompson will go visit his mother in a Tennessee hospital tomorrow and then decide his next moves?
Here's the video from the Thompson Headquarters:
This won't be good news for Fred Heads.
Martha Maccallum from FOX News has blog coverage-- at least she's mentioning a couple of blogs by name tonight (RedState).
Glenn Reynolds reports that Duncan Hunter is quitting!
Stephen Green is live-blogging at Pajamas Media.
UPDATE: FOX News is reporting that Senator John McCain has won the South Carolina Republican Primary.
QUOTE OF THE NIGHT:
Sean Hannity: (To Senator McCain) Do you think your willingness to change your position towards securing the border first helped a lot?Still for amnesty?
John McCain: Actually, I didn't change my position...
**HotAir posted the video.
That clip won't calm conservatives any tonight.
Senator McCain's line about lowering taxes during his victory speech was a bit confusing, too-- considering he did not vote for the Bush tax cuts.
Update 2: (9:43 PM CST) With 93 percent of precincts reporting, McCain had 33 percent and Mike Huckabee, 30 percent. Fred Thompson had 16 percent, Mitt Romney had 15 percent. Ron Paul was polling at 4 percent and Rudy Giuliani at 2 percent.
UPDATE 3: Via MediaBistro and HotAir, MSNBC announcers Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews laugh at Fred Thompson and then grill Mitt Romney on his Mormon faith and then grill him for wearing his collar open and shirt sleeves rolled up... AMAZING!
That's a reason why trust in the media plummetted to 19.6% in a recent poll.
UPDATE 4: The Corner- Among Non-Evangelicals [Rich Lowry] Huckabee finished fourth, with just 12% according to CNN exits.
Senator John McCain with Senator Lindsey "We're Going to Tell the Bigots to Shut Up" Graham greets the crowd after his win tonight.

The Astute Bloggers have analysis on the win tonight.

I feel that if Romney is the GOP nominee that he'll pick Thompson for VP. They haven't really went after each other and he's a good solid conservative and that will ensure him a victory with republicans. I can't see any other choice, and the Fred-heads are a very committed bunch it seems.
You might want to do an update, those numbers at Fox have changed quite a bit.
After being a Republican who has worked their tail off for every Republican candidate since Ronnie Reagan ran, I have to tell all of you this. If McCain is the nominee, you will do it without me. I will not vote for McCain, EVER. So like Tom DeLay, I will sit this one out.
What does it say about McCain when Tom DeLay whose loyality to the Republican party cannot be questioned and when Rick Santorum, whose conservative credentials are impecable say "anyone but McCain"?
There is no difference in any socialist. Not even the ones who have an "R" behind their names.
I agree with retire05 about McCain. I have vowed to support whoever the GOP nominates, with the exception of McCain. It would have to be a game day decision, as to if I would be able to live with myself, knowing I had voted for him.
He doesn't have the Senate record to justify calling him a friend of the GOP, and he doesn't have the temperament, or maybe even the mental stability, to be President.
I'm a Thompson fan and blogger who's about to throw in with McCain. He's my second choice.

flashback: 4 Dems & McCain
==
RINO mcCain? Huckafool? I'll acftively campaign to see these rubes defeated by the Dem-scum first.
Death Wish 2008 for Pubbies, it seems.
This is a marathon, not a sprint.
Once Thompson drops out, Rudy will follow after a poor performance in Florida.
That leaves McCain, Romney, Huck and Paul. Huck's broke, and after a few more third place finishes, he'll be gone too.
McCain will stay financially alive with his recent victories, but not for long, as former Fred Heads will refuse to vote for him and either side with Romney, or more likely, Paul.
That leaves two contenders in the long run - Romney and Paul - the only two candidates with the money to make it through the marathon.
This will be an interesting race - an established neo-conservative, lobbyist-backing former hedge fund manager versus an anti-establishment, non-interventionist, fiscally conservative and economically sound former gynecologist.

Ron Paul hasn't got a chance. He's been deadweight for over two weeks now and is going nowhere.
Romney is going to do very well in Florida and most likely just knock Rudy out of the race since he's been using his turtle strategy, Rudy knows he's out already because he's changing message to fit the day and isn't upbeat at all.
