Arrests At Berkeley Protests-- City Meeting On Marines Tonight ...Update: City Council Sides With Code Pink!

I suppose this protest was extra credit for the Berkeley school children--
(Actually- Their teachers escourted them to the protest!!)

Scott Conover of Tracy (back to camera) and Anna Powelson, a Berkeley High School freshman (directly in front of Powelson) speak as protesters on both sides of the issue clash outside the Maudelle Shirek Building, where the Berkeley City Council will meet tonight to consider rescinding the letter they sent to the U.S. Marines. Conover told the crowd his son was killed in the war. (Chronicle photo by Kim Komenich)

The Berkeley City Council members were going to meet tonight to decide on whether to continue their attacks against the US Marines.

Michelle Malkin had a roundup on the violence earlier in the day in Berkeley.

Senate Democrats blocked the "Semper Fi Act" and refused to support the US Marines in Berkeley.

UPDATE: At their meeting that ended late last night the Berkeley City Council balked at an apology to the US Marines.
The San Jose Mercury News reported:

...The City Council with a 7-2 vote at 1 a.m. sought to clarify one of its Jan. 29 Marines motions with new language that recognizes "the recruiters' right to locate in our city and the right of others to protest or support their presence."

The new statement also said the council opposes "the recruitment of our young people into this war."

The council heard testimony from about 100 people who came from as far away as Colorado to weigh in on the issue.

At the same time, the council let stand four other items it passed at its previous meeting, including one encouraging "all people to avoid cooperation with the Marine Corps recruiting station," another asking the city attorney to investigate whether the recruiting station is breaking the city's law against discrimination based on sexual orientation and two items giving the peace group Code Pink a free weekly parking space and sound permit to protest at the Shattuck Avenue recruiting station once a week.
CNN added this on the new resolution:

It went on to say the council applauds residents and organizations that "volunteer to impede, passively or actively, by nonviolent means, the work of any military recruiting office located in the City of Berkeley."

Note that McClatchy Watch has the following on this very situation: McClatchy reporter who insulted a US soldier in Baghdad writes article on Berkeley's snub of the Marines...

Kevin has provided some very good stuff here... "Calvan's article doesn't come close to giving readers the full flavor of what Berkeley did to the Marines, so I'm offering a few links"...

Definitely worth a look at...

What is this about? Isn't it about the Marines' policy on gays? Anyone who wants to protest on behalf of gays should be able to easily find some other group to protest against, such as the Islamists.

But I doubt if these people would ever protest against the Islamists, which doesn't say much for their intelligence.

The policy on gays is, of course, only an excuse. These people just hate the fact that America has a military and uses it to fight genocidal fascists. For a modern progessive, that is inexcusible.

"But I doubt if these people would ever protest against the Islamists"

Islamists lack the restraint of US Marines. Islamists would slowly behead these nicompoops. They know that the Marines will simply abide by the law, follow orders, and although one Marine could inflict serious injury upon a crowd of hippies, they won't.

One of those Pink Code female representatives on Fox said that they wanted to soldiers to come back home. The interviewer asked the Pink Code female why they weren't going to boycott the trans-gender? conference, and she replied that well, they weren't killing anybody - paraphrasing. So really, the Pink code people just want the soldiers to come home, not because they care, but because they don't want them killing anybody.

These Pink Code people are so clueless about what the American soldiers are doing in Iraq; it should be a crime to be that stupid.

Ah yes, you are a traitor if you disagree with the military, the government, or the actions of either. That's what America stands for: never dissenting, never protesting, never disagreeing with the powers that be. That makes you a good American. Never question authority... hey, isn't that what got the Germans in trouble in the 1930s? Funny how fascist history is repeating itself right before our eyes and you people here are the forefront of the fascist march. You ought to be ashamed to call yourselves Americans!

"hey, isn't that what got the Germans in trouble in the 1930s?"....

Hey, isn't the Berkely attitude that got people marched to the ovens in large numbers to be turned into ash?

How is the Berkeley attitude that got people marched to the ovens?

Quite the contrary, the "sheeple", which you are one of, in this country sound an awful lot like the Good Germans of WWII. Just listen to the people in charge. Obedience is key. Worshipping of the military is key. Disagreement is treason. Protest is treason.

Open your eyes. This country is on the fast track to fascism and you are helping it on its way. How sad that we don't learn.

I'm the first anonymous to post on this thread. To the second anonymous, I say that what got Germany in trouble was not obeying orders and never dissenting. By the time the Nazis took over, it was too late to do much of anything but obey orders. No, the mistakes were made before then. And the leftists made the big mistake of thinking that the Social Democrats, who were just to the right of them, were fascists who must be destroyed, while the Nazis were thought of as inconsequential. Guess where that kind of thinking led?

We see the left making the same dumb mistake today. They think that evangelicals and our military are terrible and must be destroyed, while our real enemy, the Islamists, are thought of as inconsequential.

And just for the record, I myself don't mind dissent. But as a leftist, it's embarrassing to see other leftists be so stupid.
