Islamic Prayer Tower Rises Over South St. Louis City

The South St. Louis skyline is getting a new addition...
...An Islamic prayer tower complete with loud speakers.

In the middle of America's Heartland an Islamic prayer tower rises. (GP Photo)

In the last decade 50,000 Bosnians have moved to St. Louis and many to the South City Bevo Mill neighborhood. St. Louis today is thought to hold the largest Bosnian population in the nation.

(GP Photo)
So to make the local Bosnians feel more at home the local Islamic Center is putting up a prayer tower in the formerly Dutch and currently Bosniak neighborhood of Bevo Mill, according to blogger Republican Riot. From this tower the call to prayer is to be broadcast several times a day.

I was surprised and a bit skeptical to hear this prayer tower news but Republican Riot even posted photos of the tower being constructed in South St. Louis City.
Here's one photo from Republican Riot blog:

This morning I got up early and drove to the Islamic Center in South St. Louis and took a couple more photos of the new tower:

Amazing! (GP Photo)
Those calls to prayers ought to go over really well with the people of this South St. Louis neighborhood.

UPDATE: Little Green Footballs is being threatened by CAIR over this story.

UPDATE 2: The imam says there will be no loud speakers on the minaret at this time.

My God, what brain dead city inspector gave a permit for this autrocity? Does St. Louis no longer have noise ordinances? This is really going to go over well when the residents of the Bevo area have to listen to this starting at what? daybreak? and on for four more times? Prayer towers use loud speakers to blast the call over a large area.

The residents of a quite mainly residential town outside of Houston, Katy, is facing the same thing. The locals have gotten together and are trying to block the Islamic prayer tower on the basis that they have a noise ordinance that they insist be observed.

Once again, Islam shows that it only respects those of it's own faith, and not the community surrounding the mosque.

Bevo residents need to demand construction cease immediately.

"Islamic Prayer Tower Comming Soon To Your Neighborhood" should be a wakeup call for all Americans.

If the Muslims want to have a call to prayer twice a week like my parish rings the bell before Mass at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and 10:15 a.m. on Sunday, fine. But five times a day over a loud speaker? Doesn't that violate my right to privacy?

Down the road, St. Louis will have a more and more islamic city council- just like Hamtramsk- and in due time there will be a call to silence Church Bells- just like in Hamtramsk. And other towns I likely have not yet heard about.

Before the ethnic cleansing of Bosnia in the early 90s, the practice of Islam by Bosnians was relaxed, and worlds apart from the aggressive, in-your-face Wahabi style which is mandatory in Saudi Arabia.

But with the US policy of denying arms to Bosnian Muslims for self-defense, came an eager campaign of aid to them from the middle East. Mujahadeen fighters from many Islamic countries, and wads of money from the Saudis. And riding on those wads of dough came Wahabi controllers, eager to start a new European beachhead.

So where before 1990, Bosnia had some lovely old mosques from centuries ago (those the Serbs failed to knock down), now it has giant grim new concrete mega-mosques straight from the Saudi drawing boards, with mega-minarets and mega-PA systems to match.

And presto! Now the Wahabis have used their Bosnian connection to leapfrog the mega-minaret to Saint Louis. Who says that ethnic cleansing can't be exploited for further conquests?

Obviously you have never been to an Islamic country. Church bells ring to announce the start of services. The towers are used to broadcast the entire prayer/service to the community.
I wonder how long it will take for them to start shutting down roads and businesses during prayer in this community?

I see you have no experience with these "prayer towers". Having spent quite a bit of time in the middle east, I know what these things sound like. And comparing them to church bells is just laughable. I could hear the damn thing IN my apartment shouting out the call to prayer several time a days, clear as anything. These things are LOUD. And the call is repetitive and never seems to end. It definitely got old, real real fast.

So what, you hear church bells once a week maybe, on Sunday? Get ready for up to FIVE TIMES A DAY, repeated over and over each time.

Shame on St. Louis for allowing this into our country.

First off, Church bells are beautiful.

Second off, what goes up, can come down.

Muslims in Britain wanted to broadcast the call to prayer five times a day, and the British people threw a hissy-fit. Here, I thought the British were on the fast slide to dhimmitude, but I think the Americans, who can't be outdone, are even surpassing them.

Anony-mouse - A church rings its bells, without a loudspeaker, once or twice a week - my church's bells can hardly be heard past the church parking lot. This would be a call-to-prayer FIVE TIMES EVERY DAY, over a LOUDSPEAKER.

Big difference.

In response to "anonymous" and retire05, where I live, there was a famous court case about a church steeple (Church of Latter Day Saints, I believe) that was just massive. The neighbors brought a case under the state's zoning laws, but lost, mainly because of a federal law that protects houses of worship.

The law is 42 USC 2000cc (the "Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act). The general rule is that "No government shall impose or implement a land use regulation in a manner that imposes a substantial burden on the religious exercise of a person, including a religious assembly or institution, unless the government demonstrates that imposition of the burden on that person, assembly or institution (A) is in furtherance of a compelling governmental interest; and (B) is the least restrictive means of furthering that compelling governmental interest." In a nutshell, building regulations for churches, mosques, etc. are treated the same as race-conscious government actions.

I personally think this law stinks. I understand the idea behind it, but the Feds should seriously get their noses out of local zoning matters. Anyway, don't blame the local St. Louis officials - their hands are most certainly tied on this one.

When I see Islamic countries letting Christians come in and build churchs and when Muslim women have equal rights, THEN I will not mind a Islamic prayer tower or mosques here.

Islam is not about tolerance, just look at the hell women and non-muslims go through in Islamic countries.

Something wicked this way comes.

This is not the beginning. Several citys in Michigan have silenced church bells and built towers that call out the call to Muslim prayer 5 times a day. Multi-Culturalism is a sin to Islam. There's is "our way, or the highway"... to death.

Slowly but surely, we will see these towers, these symbols of torture and death most hideous, rising in every American city across the land while our feeble minded pacifist ELECTED leaders willinlgly become the supplicants of tyrannical Islam and allow Islam to subjugate all of America at the behest of weak kneed slack jawed politicians, and their constituents who would rather die in slavery than resist the enemys of freedom and democracy.

It's just a matter of time, maybe our time, maybe our children's or grandchildren's time, before all of America will hear the Muslim call to prayer blared from loud speakers atop towers five times a day, everyday, 365 days a year, everywhere. Yet, so many people dismiss what should be an epiphany as a blind attempt at "equality", and they are ignorant that to Islam there is no such thing as "equality", only conversion, slavery, or death.

WAKE UP AMERICA... you can't ignore the beast standing on your doorstep and make it go away!

Another difference--church bells sound nice. The high decibel howling that emanates from these monstrosities is ugly. Maybe it's just a cultural thing, but hey, I can't just change my mind and start liking a sound that makes me think of oppression, misogyny, slavery, murder, and brutality.
It will never be the sweet sound of multiculturalism, will it?

Another difference, church bells are sometimes used as time keeping signals, going off at noon etc. The call to prayer is a demand that the people do something, like report to the nearest mosque. In Islamic countries where the dhimmis live, the folks who aren't attending are fair game for the muttawa.

The spread of Wahhabism is the most serious threat to the fabric of American life. You can bet that if this policy stands, this prayer tower will act as a beacon of weakness to radical Wahhabists seeking a home (and potential base of operations) in the heartland. before we all go nuts over this, let me share my that i've lived in Dallas (tons of Muslims and tons of mosques) and all those mosques had prayer towers. i've also traveled all across the US to major cities that had mosques i noticed.

HOWEVER, not a single one of those prayer towers was EVER used. they were more for visual presence than anything else. i even asked about that and was told by residents that they're never used.

i'm willing to wager that in order to get the permit, something had to have been documented prohibiting the actual loudspeaker use of it.

so don't go nuts. no one is taking over America... geez, you people scare so easily.

why don't one of you who live in the area actually find out if they intend to use the tower for something other than architectural use (like EVERY other mosque i've encountered)?

Our basic concern with religious liberty is founded on certain assumptions about religion which may not hold for everything that goes by that name. Islam for example, might well be considered not as a religion but as a criminal conspiracy. It's founding documents
demand that its adherents steal lie cheat pillage and rape as their natural right all those who are not Muslims, unless they convert or accept dhimmi status. Even if one abases oneself to be a slave, he may be killed at the whim of a "believer.
Let's get serious. While not all Muslims are murderous thugs,( and Muslims can make an excellent case with their Koran that those who are not are apostates and deserve death) still almost all the murderous organized thuggery in the world is Islamic.

The main difference between the Islamic call to prayer and church bells--which no one else seems to have hit on--is that the Islamic call to prayer is a PROSELYTIZING message.

Bells are not religion-specific. It's a fucking bell. It can mean anything. Whether it's annoying or not is a matter of taste, but it has no inherent connection to any religion.

However, someone yelling over a loudspeaker, in Arabic, to come to pray to Allah is very obviously different. I don't think anybody can be faulted for not wanting to hear that stuff five times a day. I'm not a Muslim. I don't want to hear someone yelling for me to come pray to their God.

And frankly, if a Baptist church were issuing a call to prayer over a loudspeaker in the same way, I'd be JUST as against that. I don't want to hear them calling me to pray to their God either.

Sorry to go anonymous here but I can't make my Blogger account work anymore and don't use it enough to fix it.

How is this different from a church bell?

1) Church bells are wordless. They can be a pretty noise if you prefer. They are used in celebration or mourning and to tell time. They used to call people to church but we have watches for that kind of thing now. (So do Muslims. There are host of other technical innovations which can be used to tell the times of prayer without disturbing the neighbors)

2) The Muslim call to prayer is a statement of faith in Islam. Even though it is in Arabic, it will invade the homes and backyards of non-muslims every day. Image if a church was allowed to blast the sinners prayer or the Nicene Creed into your private space every day and that is exactly what is happening with the call to prayer. No church bell says anything and it would have to be a big damn bell to penetrate into your home.

3) Last but not least. In Islamic teaching the broadcast of the call to prayer over an area claims that area for Islam forever more. It will be considered Muslim territory just like Spain is still considered Muslim land unlawfully stolen from Dar al Islam. They won't make that claim until they can, but they will certainly make it if ever anyone challenges their authority over that space or tries to take it back. In Islam, territory must be Islamaformed, environments purified and tailored for the comfort of Muslims first and foremost, then the dhimmis get only those accomodations which don't interfere. A Muslim must be perfectly comfortable and in control of an environment free of any offense or temptation. They believe that only in such an environment can a person be truly "respected" and pure. In other words they have to live in a bubble and anyone who wants to live with them must sanitize themselves so as not to upset the oh so delicate and morally sensitive and pure systems of Muslims.

They will gradually purify the area and God help anyone who tries to reverse the trend.

After a while you will hear liberals praising the wholesomeness of these areas and scoffing that anyone could have a problem with them. (Cultural betrayal is their M.O. after all.) But no one except Muslims and the odd multi-culti moonbat will want to live there.

LEDependent,

They have special clocks that keep track of the times of prayer. They operate just like a clock just a bit more complicated. But like a clock, they pretty much run themselves. All you have to so is adjust them on a regular basis to keep them on time.

I also have a suggestion for those in the community who would want to oppose this. Besides clocks, the mosque could use beepers or broadcast the call over the radio in that local area. I am sure that this wouldn't be expensive. What about some enterprising Muslim inventing something like a weather radio that would be tuned to a certain frequency at all times. It would only sound in response to an alert sent from the mosque.

Anonymous from Dallas. Not every mosque uses them for decoration. There are many documented examples of mosques in areas where Muslims are concentrated in larger numbers than in Dallas which have received permission to broadcast the call and do. This one seems to be set up to broadcast.

Finally to the guy who got all outraged at us here,

The freakout wouldn't necessary if you would refrain from snap judgements. Most people here arent against the peaceful practice of Islam as long as it is respectful of the privacy and personal space of non-Muslim neighbors. I am against this kind of thing because it is such a gross violation of the religious compact that has served this country well for so long. We should be free to believe what we want and free from someone else getting in our face with what they believe. This kind of thing MUST be put to a permanant end. We have to start raising a fuss and fighting it somewhere.

A couple points I would like to make. 1) The minuret was originally a place for the imam to climb up to so HE could call people to pray. I say let him. But don't embrace modern technology to let you use speakers and a recorded cd to call to prayer. 2) if they can accept that technology why can't they use alarm clocks? They actually HAVE alarm clocks in Moslem countries that call to prayer 5 times a day. Software too. My wife had my computer screaming 5 times a day. I told her it was a virus and had to be removed. 3) I doubt they will be using it to call to prayer right away. They will wait a few years and if the population becomes large enough they will do it then.

Bosnia was a one hundred percent Christian country until the evil Muslims invaded, raped. Killed and enslaved the people and forced people to become Muslim. In Islam you have three choices. My first thought upon looking at the tower is someone issued a variance and probably got the consent of the neighbors sharing the parking lot.
Of course, it all depends on zoning regulations in that county.
I'm with others, I wouldn't want to hear that thing blaring 5 times a day and I wouldn't frequent the stores around it. I believe it is meant to be intimidating.
And as far as erecting it but not planning on actually brining it into use, that's just avoidance for now. You can bet your bottom dollar that once they have it up, they will eventually push the issue to the next step.
I don't like it. It's too big and has the capacity to disturb the peace. No church, either Muslim or Christian should be blaring prayers over a loudspeaker 5 times a day. It interferes with my rights on peaceful enjoyment and not being subjected to the religion of others.
You want to practice your religion? Go go for it. Just don't expect me to be subjected to it.
St Louis, remove those speakers and bring that tower down to a reasonable level.
Living in a democratic society means you have to be mindful of the rights of others around you. I understand why you don't want school prayers. Now understand why I don't want that tower.

As a citizen of India let me warn my American counterparts that the loudspeakers in these minarets are a major source of noise pollution. We have these all over India and I do not have an issue with folks practising their religion, but it does become an issue of civic disturbance when one impinges on others' right to peace and quiet. Unfortunately, the boneheads in St Louis, in a manner of being politically correct and afraid of being sued by terror organizations like CAIR and ACLU, have allowed for this source of disturbance to be erected. This is a portender of things to come, folks. Giddy up!

If a certain religion wants a call to prayer, let them program that time into an alarm clock or cell phone. I should not have to hear something like this multiple times a day. We don't need stupid things like this in modern times. Someone's baseless religious practices should not be allowed to disturb my life. Just as they have the right to practice their beliefs, I should have the right to not be affected by them. If they would spend more time becoming educated they would spend less time worshipping their imaginary friends who preach hate.

Even Muslims like Khaled Hroub made this comment.
"Some people wonder, what happened to 'European tolerance?' Why don't the Europeans accept strangers? How come they reject the Muslims and oppose the building of mosques? Such questions are in fact evading the real problem. The problem [we are facing] is how to avoid provoking European society, how not to exaggerate in displaying religious [symbols] - such as large mosques and religious establishments - and how to refrain from flaunting them in public..

Most of those Bosnians came here under the guise of political assylum. Now that Kosovo will be recognized as a state, by the UN, shouldn't they be sent back? They obviously do not plan on integrating, or embracing American culture. WAKE UP AMERICA!!!! They are scratching away at the layers of the laws and our civilization, until all of the wonderfulness that is the USA will become extict....A THIRD WORLD. SEND THEM PACKING!!!

It is great to see the comments of all you patriots here. Some people do care thank god! People need to stop living in a fantasy world and come over to reality.
REALITY: Islam is evil and the religion of the devil! Pure and simple. Any religion that says its ok to blow people up is evil. Muhammad was not a prophet, he was simply a conqueror. Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and most other religions were founded and spread on words. Islam was founded and spread with the sword.

I have asked myself many times why Europe and America continue to let these thieves in dirty nightshirts into our lands. I mean why would you let these barbarians in? The govt knows they will cause problems and blow shit up. That is what they are counting on so they can declare martial law and take away ALL your freedoms under the guise of "Security and Safety"

All I can say is to prepare yourself for the revolution that is inevitable.

I will NEVER convert to the Religion of Satan!!!!!

Outlaw so called "prayer towers" immediately. They are too easily turned into a Trojan Horse used to communicate militant radical islamist commands. Ban them and tear them all down immediately! Outlaw Sharia law, outlaw Wahabeehism and other militant forms of islam in the United States immediately!

Freedom of religion is not freedom to put in place structures which can be used to destroy the country.
REMEMBER 9/11/2001!!!

The local community should embrace this and see it as a tourist attraction. They can begin selling Mohammed t-shirts, mugs, posters, bumper stickers, and anything else they can put its face on. Muslims love seeing pictures of Mohammed lets make them feel welcome.

I left St. Louis in 1984 to get away from the politically liberal environment. I knew that it would continue to get worse! I truly feel sorry for friends that decided to stay and build families there. 'Next thing you know, we'll have Sharia law in St. Louis! St. Louisans, get out while you can still sell your homes.

Those saying the muslim call to prayer is no different than church bells, HAVE YOU EVER HEARD THAT CALL TO PRAYER OMG ITS HORRIBLE. No wonder so many of them are crazy jihadists.

Great idea selling mohammed picture t shirts outside that tower. Hopefully the corrupt city will give you a permit, but sell other t shirts too. That should work.

What is wrong with this picture. Why is it ok for islamics to put up prayer towers when the Christians are being forced to take down crosses and the ten commandments?
When are the American people going to stand up and say enough is enough. As far as I am concerned we are at war with islamics and their terrorist. Being islamic is not a religion it is a cult. In their koran is stated that they are to convert their neighbors and if their neighbors will not convert they must be killed. And they call this a peaceful religion give me a break.

If you need a reminder, set up a texting service that will email your phone when it is time to pray or have a Outlook calendar reminder.

The church bells at three Catholic churches that I regularly drive past chime every HOUR. Why is this such a big deal? Most of the folks that live in Bevo are Bosnian anyway.

Those that say "bells sound nice" are missing the point. It's subjective--they may sound nice to you. Maybe the Muslim call to worship "sounds nice" to Muslims.

If you guys want to exercise your freedom to post ignorant, inflammatory, and xenophobic comments, I'd recommend not infringing on the Muslim right to worship. Or do their rights not count because they're Muslim?

I'm ashamed to live near such racist, hateful, ignorant folks. You're the ones threatening our freedom.

BTW, this is a symbolic minaret only. There are no speakers. It will make no sound. I realize that should take all the wind out of your collective sails of hatemongering, but I'm sure you ignorant rednecks can come up with some other reason to hate people different than yourselves.

Someone needs to fly into this eye sore a remote-controlled plane, painted just like an American Airlines jet and one that is outfitted with a couple sticks of dynamite. Send a REAL LOUD and clear message to these folks that we aren't allowing this crap in our country!

Has anyone realized that the minaret is actually under all that scaffolding? You're looking at something under construction, not the finished tower which will likely be aesthetically pleasing, especially to those of you that think churches bells "sound pretty".

I lived in Egypt for a year. Had a Mosque across the street.

The call to pray is distinct to Muslim power.

Personally, Muslims should be subjected to all the same restrictions we are, while allowing freedom of worship.

Still, the Muslim flood into our country and Europe is more than sissy liberals refuse to believe.

Most of them would either change their minds or convert after living in one of their countries for a year.

We used to turn up "devils" music from our observation tower when ever the call to prayer happened... Yeah... They didn't like that ;^)

Now that some stupid American city allowed one tower to be built, now they will demand that hundreds are built in every American city!! The tower offends my religion, according to the ACLU, it must be torn down to protect MY religious beliefs.

All I can say is I hope a bunch of butcher shops, liquor stores and abortion clinics start setting up next door to this nuke missile device posing as a piece of crap eyesore.

I say the locals deserve what they get. I don't know what the approval process there entails, but surely this is a big project and there must have been many meetings with community involvement.

Maybe many residents did fight, but apparently not hard enough, and if it the result of representatives not looking out for their best interests, well that is their fault too for failing to elect good ones.

Until people get their asses off the lazy-boys, put down the beer, shut off the TV, and start getting serious about where they want the country to go it will continue to go to those who do. Nothing short of a near revolutionary stance will suffice at this point.

If you don't like it it's your fault!

Just north of Kansas City in Overland Park an Islamic Center has gone in. Like the one here it will soon get a tower of terror. The islamic center in overland park is only 3 miles from an unguarded small low fenced AIRPORT with easy access to crop dusters on other types of planes. Wonder why they would pick such a place. ALL ARE FUNDED BY THE SUADIs. THANK GEORGE BUSH FOR LETTING EM ALL IN.

In response to Greg's post regarding the law and religious institutions. The law was undoubtedly in place prior to the mass immigration of these Bosnians. Due to their religious "demands", why didn't they move to the outskirts of the city in light of the law. Are religious practices of any kind able to force hardship or discomfort on others?
