For a Constitutional Scholar- Obama Fails Miserably At History

"We the people, in order to form a more perfect union.”

Two hundred and twenty one years ago, in a hall that still stands across the street, a group of men gathered and, with these simple words, launched America’s improbable experiment in democracy. Farmers and scholars; statesmen and patriots who had traveled across an ocean to escape tyranny and persecution finally made real their declaration of independence at a Philadelphia convention that lasted through the spring of 1787.

Senator Barack Obama
A More Perfect Union
In Defense of his G-Damning America Pastor
March 18, 2008
Just words?

For claiming to be a constitutional law professor, Barack Obama failed miserably on the historical facts at his talk this week- the most important speech of his political career:

** The United States Declaration of Independence is an act of the Second Continental Congress, adopted on July 4, 1776.

** The Constitutional Convention began May 25, 1787 and ended September 17, 1787 - though Barry Obama says it ended in the spring of 1787.

** Obama also refers to people who came across the ocean at the convention - hogwash - they were men who were born in America. Only eight of the 55 delegates were born elsewhere: four (Butler, Fitzsimons, McHenry, and Paterson) in Ireland, two (Davie and Robert Morris) in England, one (Wilson) in Scotland, and one (Hamilton) in the West Indies.

** And, they formed a Republic, not a Democracy.

It is truly sad that his team could not look in a history book and sad that so few knew he had failed to use the facts.

You'd think before the media swooned that Obama's speech was on par with the words of Republican Abe Lincoln, they would have done their research first.

I may be missing something here but the 'more perfect union' part comes from the preamble of the Constitution, not the Declaration of Independence

Yes, it is from the Constitution, and he also misquoted it:

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union..."

Nevermind. I see what he is saying. Had my double extra thick BS filters on.

Yet we are being told that this speech, so JFK/MLK esk, was written by Obama himself over the course of two days. I would not be surprised that the next thing we hear is that he wrote it on the back of a [very large] envelope.

He was the editor of the Harvard Law Review, yet never wrote an opinion. He is a Constitutional scholar, but seems to get the dates wrong.

I am sure we will be told it is because he did not major in History.

The Kos kids were going all orgasmic gooey yesterday because they believe Obama wrote this speech alone late into the night, without any speechwriters. Yup, Obamessiah wrote it all by his own brilliant self. Last time I checked, that diary had about 500 awe-filled comments about how much smarter Obama is than any candidates or politicians before him.

I'm sure it doesn't have anything to do with the demphasis on facts so prevelant in both secondary and college-level educational programs.

Yeah and he left out the 'provide for the common defense' part as well.

Also, he is painting this as a democratic endeavor. Not accurate. There was no way these delegates were going to turn over the country to the passions of the masses. Nowhere in the Constitution does the word democracy appear.

marybel brings up this issue of comaprisons to Lincoln. I find this absolutely hilarious. These Kosbots and Chris Matthews with tingly feelings down his leg comparing Obama to Lincoln... a Republican... an actual President that threatened the Constitution, suspended the Writ of habeus corpus, that threatened to arrest legislators... you know, the kind of things thay claim GWB is doing to take away our rights.

Why should any of this surprise anyone?

Government schools, colleges and universities are no longer places of learning. They are places of indoctrination in "liberal values".

My nephew who just graduated from the University of Arizona (Master in Archeology, minor in Geology) told me that his teachers cared more that his papers reflected the proper "attitude" toward the subject more then they cared if he got the facts straight. He said he learned very early on how to bullshit them into thinking that he agreed with their views. He also said college was the biggest waste of time and money and he was thankful he paid his own way through and did not rack up thousands on student loans. Why does he think that? Because he said he really did not learn much of anything except in his math classes and that even the science courses are getting to the point where you have to write your papers with the professors "world view" in mind to get a decent grade.

Needless to say he is not bothering with getting a doctorate.

That's one of the nice things about being an idea guy - you leave the details to others. If anybody complains, you say "big picture" a lot.

I guess the honeymoon's over for Obama? I think he underestimated that people might actually want to find out who he is and evaluate his words.

That's not working so well for him. I *almost* feel sorry for him, but not quite.

Being factually accurate and logically consistent is willful enslavement to white oppression. More ethnic and victim studies is what is needed to lift children out of poverty and oppression.

The only similarity between Obama and Abe Lincoln involves a pair of clippers and his wife Michelle's face.

Listening to the General Public speak about life in America, I've heard people supporting Obama because he 'points out' the problems of people, mostly the problems of people without jobs or jobs that don't pay very much.

People should be outraged that government education took so many years from them and did not give them anything to use in the 'real world' and that is why they are working low paying jobs.

Obama is not the answer, American people need to educate themselves and work hard to prosper. Government regulations need to end and let people think for themselves.

FYI - Barry attended 5th-12th grades at Punahou School - a top rated Prep School - a very demanding educational load is placed on each student there and how odd that I learned my history there and he didn't....

And, why is anyone making excuses for him getting historical facts wrong - he can read, can't he?

Clarence Thomas

Mr. Constitution

excerpt:

[As for his judicial philosophy, "I don't put myself in a category. Maybe I am labeled as an originalist or something, but it's not my constitution to play around with. Let's just start with that. We're citizens. It's our country, it's our constitution. I don't feel I have any particular right to put my gloss on your constitution. My job is simply to interpret it."]
