Deaths Reported at Tibetan Rally-- Rioters Torch Cars & Shops

(Updated and Bumped)
UPDATE: The BBC reported that shops are on fire in the Lhasa, the capital-- deaths are reported. Monks and ethnic Tibetans brawled with Chinese security forces in the streets.

The BBC reported:

Fires have broken out in the Tibetan city of Lhasa amid reports of rioting, as rare street protests led by Buddhist monks appeared to gather pace.
One eyewitness told the BBC how large groups of people were setting fire to cars and shops and destroying anything of Chinese influence.

The US embassy in Beijing said US citizens had reported hearing gunfire.

Rallies have continued all week in what are thought to be the largest protests against Beijing's rule in 20 years.

Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, released a statement expressing deep concern, saying the protests were a "manifestation of the deep-rooted resentment of the Tibetan people".

The Dalai Lama, who heads Tibet's government-in-exile in India, called on the Chinese leadership to stop using force and begin dialogue with the Tibetan people.

He also urged Tibetans not to resort to violence.

"As I have always said, unity and stability under brute force is at best a temporary solution. It is unrealistic to expect unity and stability under such a rule," the statement said.

The International Campaign for Tibet reported that the monasteries were locked down in the capital following the protests this week.
Two monks tried to commit suicide during the protests(?)

Conditions are said to be increasingly tense within the three major monasteries in Lhasa, which are under lockdown and surrounded by troops following peaceful demonstrations over the last three days by hundreds of monks from Drepung, Sera and Ganden monasteries on the outskirts of the capital. Ganden monks demonstrated yesterday, marking the third day in a series of protests unprecedented in recent years that have now rippled through the Lhasa area, while others are reported in at least two remote rural monasteries and towns in areas of central and eastern Tibet.

All three monasteries are closed off to tourists according to several tourism operators. Two Drepung monks are said by Radio Free Asia to be in serious condition after stabbing themselves in a possible attempt to commit suicide, while monks at Sera are refusing to attend classes and are on hunger strike in a bold act of protest despite the crackdown at the monastery.
Chinese authorities blamed the Dalai Lama, for instigating the trouble by the monks in Lhasa.

What the Chinese have done to the Tibetian over the past 50+ years is horrific. Hundreds of thousands of people killed and deported to slave labor camps. Destruction of religious temples, art and institution. They've attempted to destroy their country and their cultural identity. Think twice before you buy anything made in China.

This is interesting --"Hundreds of thousands of people killed and deported to slave labor camps"

I am curious who is going to believe this.

The murders of Tibetans by the Communist Chinese are fairly well-known in the West. Some celebrities such as Richard Gere have tried to publicize this genocide, but with little effect. The Tibetans aren't white people, you know. Check out FreeTibet.org for details.

Around 50 million Chinese died during Mao's rule, yet we hear little about them, too.

Just go to a news portal and search for news on Tibet.

There are dozens of stories from this protest to the closing of the China side of Mt Everest.

It's all part of the government crackdown on many activities as part of the buildup to the Olympics.

Can't wait to see the millions of lefty "free Tibet" types booking passage to help out. But, maybe it's just metaphysical "help" they're offering. Or the ever-effective "rhetorical" help. Or, the lefties are just blowing smoke, as usual. The cowards would rather create violence here, than where it might promote freedom. Gee, there are CONSEQUENCES when you travel to foreign lands. Who'd o' thought?

Hey, Mike H., you'll have many chances. Just let me in, now and then. ;-) I have to leave the hard ones to better minds than mine. Fortunately, GP inspires lots of those folks.

Well what's happening China has the IOC worried and they are NOT worried about the Tibetans...

IOC plea against Beijing boycott

I wonder if the IOC Jimmy Carter is asking to keep his mouth shut on this?

There is already one person publically announcing a boycot but it isn't for reasons regarding Tibet...

could you give me some evidence like photos or videos to prove that "hundreds of thousands of people killed and deported to slave labor camps"?

dont give me some link to the blog or free Tibet website, they are rubbish.i can also write an article, pretending to be tortured by tibetans. it's so judgemental thing.

for Da Man, if you don't like chinese goods, just ignore it. no one force you to buy things made in china, it's your own choice, your own notion.

but please, stop pouring out these bullshits again. i think you are a civilized people. hence you should be responsible for what you say. so, next time, please attach a photo or video when you want to lie again, so it could be more persuasive.

From the youtube, obviously, those rioters are beating chinese and burning shops. it's the evidence that those tibetans are the ones that need to blame.
