Laura Bush traveled to Bamiyan Province in Afghanistan today to meet with Habiba Sarabi.
Habiba is the first woman appointed governor of any Afghan province.
Just 7 years ago, a few miles from where Laura Bush spoke today, the Taliban bombed the historic Bamyan Buddhas. The Buddha statues were intentionally dynamited and destroyed in 2001 by the Taliban, on orders from leader Mullah Mohammed Omar, after the Taliban government declared that they were "idols" which are forbidden under Sharia law.
And, just 9 years ago the Taliban was executing women in stadiums.

On her third visit to the country, the first lady flew into Kabul before boarding a helicopter for a 50-minute flight to Bamiyan province, the farthest she has traveled from Afghanistan's largest city.Years after George and Laura Bush leave the White House the people of Bamiyan Province will remember who set them free from the brutal Taliban.
The helicopter landed in a dusty field at a provincial reconstruction team compound operated by New Zealand. From there she could see the empty niches in a cliffside where two giant Buddha statues once stood.
They were carved into the sandstone cliffs more than 2,000 years ago. The Taliban, which considered the statues idolatrous and anti-Muslim, demolished the treasures in March 2001, causing an international outcry. The repressive Taliban ruled Afghanistan until the U.S. invaded after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
Bush's visit came ahead of a conference Thursday in Paris where the U.S. hopes other countries will pledge billions of dollars to help Afghanistan. She intends to address the conference.
"The people of Afghanistan don't want to go back and live like that," Bush told reporters during the nearly 14-hour flight to Kabul. "They know what it was like. The international community can't drop Afghanistan now, at this very crucial time."
President Bush, in an interview in Washington on Friday with RAI TV of Italy, said bluntly, "Afghanistan is broke."

Good that the article noted Mrs. Bush's emphasis on getting more international support for Afghanistan, something Obama's been criticized for saying, even though that's precisely what the "experts" and Afghanistan reports have suggested, as does Mrs. Bush here.

bg, I don't remember exactly who criticized Obama about it since a few weeks now, and that far back the Obama-bashng websites start to blend, you could probably search it out just as easily as I could, but you're exactly right, so often Obama haters criticize him for saying the exact same thing present government or Defense folks have said, even things McCain has said. But Obama says it and it's all of a sudden dangerous, uninformed, naive, etc. It's the strategy of if you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it...

Therefore the Taliban would still be in power if he were President at the time. They'd still be there while he calls us all bitter and demonizes oil companies for causing the problem by drilling in Saudi Arabia. We should know infidels are not allowed on holy muslim sands. Obama instead would've sang the sweet Muslim evening prayer that he enjoys so much and knows by heart. Then told the world we need to understand Osama. Given time and talks according to Obama, we could then all share with him the serenity of blowing up Bhuddist statues while citing Surahs and enjoying honor killings.

He has pushed for Europe, Asia, India, etc., to provide more aid, more training, more troops. Unlike Obama, he does not DEMONIZE people he disagrees with in public rants promising to "heal the planet" or "bring back troops" before finishing the job.
Today, France, England, Canada, Denmark, Germany, India, Australia, Singapore, Japan, Sweeden, Jordan, etc, are all contributing troops or cash, training, management, food supplies, contracting roadways, bridges, dams, etc., in helping rebuild a nation from scratch.
There are over 39 nations directly involved in Afghanistan with troops on the ground. There are many more nations helping with civilian organizations as well.

You do realize McCain pushed for funding the "freedom fighters" that eventually turned into the Taliban and that McCain poo-pooed Obama's statement after the Bhutto assassination that he'd airstrike Pakistan if he had actionable intelligence even if the Pakistan government was not cooperating. Meanwhile, you are aware that thanks to Bush's terrible "Arab coalition" approach (that includes state sponsor of terror Pakistan), the situation is not just bad for Pakistan but getting worse again for Afghanistan, that Pakistan Taliban formed a coalition last December, signed treaties with the government last month, and is now establishing Shariah in 7 states? Notice how Bush doesn't mention Pakistan and Saudi Arabia in their rants about state sponsors of terror? That's b/c we're aiding/abetting them. Sorry, we are.
