Obama's VP Vetter Eric Holder Tied To Marc Rich Pardon Scandal

Obama Vetter Eric Holder Might Want to Prepare For Toss Under the Bus

RedState says Holder is "awash in cronyism, skirts ethics laws, had horrible judgement, and is simply incompetent."

The Obama Campaign has another problem that needs vetting.
The Washington Times reported:

Republicans, smelling the success of knocking out the head of Sen. Barack Obama's vice-presidential search committee Wednesday, renewed efforts to ensnare another top adviser to the Democratic presidential candidate with the exploits of his Washington-insider past.

The criticism Thursday centered on Obama adviser Eric H. Holder Jr., who is scrutinizing candidates to be the Democratic presumptive presidential nominee's running mate. As deputy attorney general under President Clinton, Mr. Holder reviewed the last-minute pardon of fugitive financier Marc Rich.

Charged with 51 counts of fraud, tax evasion and illegally trading with Iran, Mr. Rich fled to Switzerland in 1983 but won a pardon from Mr. Clinton in 2001. The decision prompted a congressional investigation because Mr. Rich's wife was a major Democratic donor and prosecutors said they were never consulted.

Indicted by then-U.S. Attorney Rudolph W. Giuliani, Mr. Rich failed to return to the U.S. following the indictment and was on the FBI's Most Wanted list for several years. Mr. Holder had given a "neutral, leaning towards favorable" opinion of the pardon that led directly to the pardoning of Mr. Rich on Mr. Clinton's last day in office.

"I think it is a matter of record that Mr. Holder recommended the pardoning of Mr. Rich," Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, told reporters Thursday.

"And all those things will be taken into consideration by the media and the American people, especially when you are entrusting individuals with one of the most important decisions that a presidential candidate can make before that individual is elected and that is who the running mate is," he said.

The Republican outcry over Mr. Holder came a day after Obama adviser Jim Johnson, who was leading the vice-presidential search team, resigned amid questions about his Wall Street dealings, including ties to subprime lender Countrywide Financial Corp.

Eric H. Holder Jr., who reviewed the pardon of financier Marc Rich as deputy attorney general under President Clinton, is scrutinizing running mates for Sen. Barack Obama.
Dick Morris says that Eric Holder was no innocent bystander in the Marc Rich pardon scandal.
He was interviewed about Holder at World Net Daily:

Morris explained the link between Holder and Rich in more detail.

"Rich wanted a pardon, and he retained Jack Quinn, former counsel to the president, to lobby his old boss. It was Holder who had originally recommended Quinn to one of Rich's advisers, although he claims that he did not know the identity of the client," Morris wrote. "And he gave substantive advice to Quinn along the way. According to Quinn's notes that were produced to Congress, Holder told Quinn to take the pardon application 'straight to the White House' because 'the timing is good.'"

"And once the pardon was granted, Holder sent his congratulations to Quinn," Morris wrote.

"If ever there was a person who did not deserve a presidential pardon, it's Marc Rich," Morris wrote.

"In 2002, a congressional committee reported that Holder was a 'willing participant in the plan to keep the Justice Department from knowing about and opposing' the Rich pardon," he said. "It is one thing to reach back to Obama's pastor to raise doubts about his values. But it is quite another to scrutinize the record of his first appointee.

"It couldn’t be a bigger mistake."
This looks like another case where Obama should have vetted his vetters before they were publicly vetted.

Ed Morrissey has more on what the media is reporting on Holder.

  1. The Hacks Behind Barack Obama

They have succeeded in presenting the picture (the image, if you will) that Obama is totally in charge of everything that happens. He's in charge of everybody that gets hired. He's in charge of writing every speech. He is the brilliant strategerist and tactician. I mean, there's no question, and I've said, "This can't be. This guy just does not have enough experience to be pulling all this off the way he is and writing these speeches and so forth."

So I said, "There gotta be somebody." Not an Oz. I don't mean in a conspiratorial way. I don't mean some Oz behind a curtain yanking the strings, but somebody, some pro, some hack that has made a strategeric decision that Obama is the perfect front man for the leftists and the radicals to take over the party -- and, lo and behold, from Thomas Lifson, who runs the American Thinker blog: Soren Dayton of RedState, also one of our favorite blogs here, "Notices that Barack Obama's choice of Jim Johnson to make vice presidential choices is worse than previously understood." You've heard about this Johnson guy. He's got ties to Countrywide, the home lender; very close ties to Angelo Mozilo, the guy that ran it. He's a Democrat Party hack, a lobbyist and all this -- the exact opposite of what Obama claims his campaign is all about. However, according to RedState, there is more on Johnson.

"In 2001, he joined Perseus, LLC, as vice-chairman. Perseus has a number of funds. Among them are the Perseus Soros Biopharmaceutical Fund LP, which Perseus co-manages. It was formed in 2000 with capital commitments totaling $449 million to make investments in life science companies." So Perseus -- it might be Perseus, I'm not sure. I've never heard it pronounced. It's P-e-r-s-e-u-s. "Perseus is a business partner with George Soros; and Johnson, one of Obama's vice presidential vetters, is the vice-chairman. Incidentally, the Say Anything blog notes that Perseus also seems to own the publisher of the Scott McClellan book." So George Soros' business partner is helping select Obama's veep. How interesting that Obama just keeps coming up with friends and appointees with very dubious associations, who are no more than Democrat Party hacks. Some change, eh?

The usual suspects on the left are doing ahead of time damage control on him already and putting out their look for the smear thats coming talking points.

The trouble is that they don't recognize the difference between facts and a smear.

Johnson had the Soros issues that nobody wanted to give air about on the left and put it all being about the loans.

Holder has all focused on Mark Rich, but seem to just forget all his involvement in WACO and the Illian Gonzalez issue where the weakened Reno was just jumping to Clinton's tune and so busy with other issues she farmed these things out to him and was just a mouthpiece of the 'packaged story'.

Obama's in a real bind. It is truly almost impossible for him to find a democrat that isn't tainted by something. Conservatives have known this all along. Now they're being outed to the rest of the population.

Obama has been shouting about how he was not taking money from lobbyists or big companies, but all that has been bypassed by people working at those places doing it individually.

He screams at large drug companies as being so bad and evil and the main lobby organization for them has Holder as one of their lawyers.

  6. That ain't all that Hot Air is reporting by the way:

    http://hotair.com/archives/2008/06/13/think-that-the-florida-issue-is-over/

Not only is Obama now moving DNC ops to Chicago, now he is replacing already "designated" delegates in Florida with those of his own choosing? Does Hillary know this? One of his advisors really used choice language when emailing about Bill Nelson too!

Is this sounding to anyone else like an Obama takeover of the entire party? WTH is going on here?

  7. Is this sounding to anyone else like an Obama takeover of the entire party?

The party is now owned by moveon.org. The people who own moveon.org are George Soros, Teresa Heinz-Kerry, Wesley Boyd, Peter Lewis and Stephen Bing.

Obama is just the empty suit the owners of the Democratic party are trying to push on us.

    WTH is going on here?

As I have said before this election is no longer about who gets the nomination for the Democratic party. It is all about who controls the party.

Right now the moveon.org people do but they have one teeny-weenie problem. The Democratic party base (with the exception of the blacks and the moonbats) and the Clinton's are not lying down before their new masters and obeying like they have been ordered to.

The moveon.org people think that if they just pimp slap the base enough and punish all within the party that oppose them that the Democrats will all go goose stepping along behind their Hungarian and Portuguese masters.

That is why they are moving the DNC to Chicago. I can assure you that any Clinton supporters or "JFK/FDR old school Democrats" within the DNC will be "reassigned" or "laid off" due to this move.

You know who else supported the Rich pardon? Cheney's former chief of staff, and convicted perjurer, Scooter Libby.
