IRAQ WAR DESERTERS Deported From Canada & Jailed
Welcome Home Boys!
Deserters deserted and jailed in the US.

Deserter Robin Long said he had been trying to gain refugee status in Canada because he believed he would suffer harm if he were to be sent back to the U.S.
Canada disagreed and deported him this week. Robin was welcomed to his new home in a Washington jail this week. (CBC)
One US Iraq War deserter was deported and jailed this week.
Another US Iraq War deserter was jailed for 9 months and stripped of his benefits.
The Star reported:
An American army deserter who took refuge in Canada before returning to the U.S. voluntarily was given a dishonourable discharge yesterday and sentenced to nine months in jail, a close supporter said.Previously:James Burmeister, 22, (on left) was sentenced by a military judge in Fort Knox, Ky., after a four-hour court martial hearing, said Carol Rawert-Trainer, of the American non-profit group Vietnam Veterans Against the War.
"It's quite a shock to everybody," said Rawert-Trainer from Louisville, Ky. "We all thought they were going to take it easy on him because he turned himself in, but it doesn't look that way."
Originally from Eugene, Ore., Burmeister went to Ottawa in May 2007 after he was injured in Iraq when he was thrown from his military vehicle by the force of a roadside bomb earlier that year.
...Yesterday's ruling will likely stand up as a felony conviction, meaning Burmeister won't be allowed back into Canada, and will likely lose his right to veterans' benefits, Zaslofsky told the Star last night.
"In that case, his post-traumatic stress disorder and some of the other problems that he has won't be dealt with properly," he noted. "I just hope this isn't an ill omen for some of the other (resisters)."
One of those other resisters is 25-year-old Robin Long.
Long became the first American war resister deported from Canada Tuesday, and could also potentially face a court martial.
Yesterday, Long was transferred from Whatcom County Jail in Bellingham, Wash., to the nearby Fort Lewis military base.
Welcome Home!... US War Deserter Kick-Canned From Canada
UPDATE: Burmeister was not only antiwar- He was giving interviews to Arab language news organizations.
The News-Enterprise has more:
Burmeister fled to Canada in May 2007, while on leave from Iraq, and turned himself in at Fort Knox in March. During his absence from his unit, the soldier was interviewed by PBS and other media outlets in the United States and Canada. His statements also appeared in an Arabic language newspaper and on an anti-war Web site that prosecutors said advocates soldiers to go AWOL.
Burmeister spoke against the use of “bait-and-kill” teams. Such teams placed objects, such as bomb components, onto the ground and then shot Iraqis who sought to recover them. Critics have said the tactic could constitute a war crime.
“This is a case of doing the wrong thing for the right reason,” argued Burmeister’s military-appointed defense attorney Capt. Tyson McDonald. “Iraq is difficult (for soldiers)… it’s worse when you see things as legally and morally wrong.”
One of Burmeister’s commanders testified on behalf of the government, saying Burmeister’s platoon did not focus on such missions.

Coward. Where are all his liberal buddies now? That's funny.
Welcome home, baby! You've come a long way!
These guys are cowards and thieves. They joined the military for the bennies but didn't want to do the job. Because they deserted, somebody else had to go in their place. They weren't drafted, they voluntarily joined, which is probably why even the Canadians had no sympathy for them.
Enjoy your stay in Leavenworth, losers.
I'm shocked and horrified by the treatment these guys are receiving.
Desertion during time of war used to be dealt with by firing squad. We ought to revive the practice.
too bad they won't hang these bastards
"In that case, his post-traumatic stress disorder and some of the other problems that he has won't be dealt with properly," he noted. "I just hope this isn't an ill omen for some of the other (resisters)."
It's not. It's a *good* omen.
"We all thought they were going to take it easy on him because he turned himself in, but it doesn't look that way."
Good God, you addle-pated cow!! They *did* "take it easy on him." Given the charges, do you have any idea what he could have been given had he been tried and convicted?
More proof (if it were actually needed) that the number one prerequisite for being a Lefty is a total inability to use reason to interact with reality.
They joined the military... the VOLUNTEER military! What did they expect when they got home... a parade? God bless our military men and women fighting to defend our freedom!
Oh, I doubt they need to worry much. If Obama is elected he'll probably pardon them the way Carter did the Vietnam deserters.
Of course, if McCain is elected they'll probably rot. Not that that's a bad thing.
Dave,
this is the "I'm not responsible," generation raised to be feral by Baby Boomers. Their infantile minds refuse to deal with personal responsibility. It doesn't mean anything that they signed a three or four year contract to serve in the military. If you don't feel like it, just walk away.
And BTW, even though they didn't desert "in the face of the enemy", I thought desertion in a time of war bought you 20 to life breaking rocks at Leavenworth. But then, what do I know?
Burmeister...was thrown from his military vehicle by the force of a roadside bomb...
Was he tested for possible TBI - traumatic brain injury? It can be difficult to detect and cause personality changes. If he was so injured he shouldn't be prosecuted.
If no such injuries then go ahead and throw the book at him.

Did these clowns think they were joining something as useless as the Peace Corp?
Best thing would have simply been not to let them back into the U.S. What fun they'd have trying to get work permits with no professional qualifications. Maybe Iran would take them, but that un-Islamic haircut would have to go.
Padre Steve, obviously these deserters joined the all-volunteer force for the perks, not God, duty, country. Their only duty is to themselves.
The hardest part for them is the possibility of not seeing Canada again. It's like a tard paradise.
Just to provide a geographical clarification Ft Lewis is 150+- miles south of Bellingham.
Theres another reason that these things joined the military and John Kerry was just 1 of their precursors. I sincerly doubt they joined for the "beneies" or the chance to wear those Uniforms. I believe they joined as anti-war plants. I'll leave it to the reader to theorize who it might have been that put these fools up to the task. I wouldn't want the lives these guys are going to lead for the next 20 to life
Burmeister ... will likely lose his right to veterans' benefits, Zaslofsky told the Star last night.
*****
Dear Mr. Zaslofsky:
A dishonorable discharge means no veterans' benefits.
Burmeister made some stupid decisions. Now he will reap the consequences of the decisions for the rest of his life.
