Subject: Brownback, Sebelius and Howard Dean

Friends,

I have received inquiries from several of you about a conversation which
is purported to have taken place between Kansas Governor Kathleen
Sebelius and Senator Brownback, in which Governor Sebelius is alleged to
have admitted that her recent comments about the national guard were
politically motivated, and furthermore made at the instigation of Howard
Dean.

While we cannot speak to the substance of or motivation behind these
comments, we can definitively say that the portions of the story which
relate to the purported conversation with Senator Brownback are *false*.
No such conversation, nor any like it, ever took place between Governor
Sebelius and Senator Brownback.

As always, if you have any further questions or concerns, please pass
them along.

I'm not surprised that the people of Greensburg and the neighboring towns got things done. They are used to that. Whether it is fixing things after an ice storm, or pitching in after a tornado, that is what people in "Red" states do for each other. People like Howard Dean don't understand this.

My favorite moment of this manufactured controversy was when NBC News quoted the governor saying she didn't have any Humvees or flatbed trucks while the video showed a Humvee and a flatbed truck driving through what used to be Greensburg, Kansas.

Wichita and Sedgwick County crews were already on standby because of the storms sweeping the state, and were in Greensburg within two hours. It's a hundred miles away. Do the math.

Acquaintances on one of those first teams told me that when they got there, the highway in had already been cleared and locals with chainsaws and pick-ups were well into clearing the streets so that rescue vehicles could go anywhere. By dawn heavy equipment from the region was already pouring in, and they had to start cordoning off the town because there were too many volunteers there with equipment. By Sunday when Sebelius made her insulting remarks, there were traffic jams on the highway from utility crews piled up, coming in to "safe" the gas and electric.

If no agency at all above county level had showed up, Greensburg rescue and recovery would still have been in full swing at dawn Saturday. And it would all still get done, at about the same pace.

Nice to have the KNG to stop looting and contribute muscle and supplies, and FEMA to pay bills. Nice, but not necessary. We take care of our own.

Time was when people saw their neighbor had no roof, they pitched in and helped, not waiting for the government to do it for them. I applaud Kansas spirit and their willingness to help those who have been made homeless and help themselves. If there is one single thing that should have been learned from Katrina it's that.

That there are Democrats thinking that they can exploit every disaster is nothing new...but absolutely disgusting all the same.

By the way, I heard the Kansas City Royals are building a new baseball field for the high school. That's great, but I think they'd better rebuild the high school first. It does prove that their heart is in the right place though and it gives me ideas.

I may just have to see what I can do about donating some tools and materials to this effort. Home Depot shopping spree, anyone?

What's really striking is how people from neighboring towns came over to help and there was a minimal amount of looting, etc going on (as least as far as I've read). Once again, Neal Stephenson proves prophetic (See Diamond Age)
