Israel may be the first country to congratulate the Pakistani Leader on his win.
The Daily Times reported:
Israeli President Shimon Peres on Monday congratulated Gen Pervez Musharraf on his yet unofficial re-election as president of Pakistan.Musharraf is also the first Pakistani leader to meet with the American Jewish Congress and accepted Israeli aid after the devastating earthquakes in 2005. Musharraf also helped push rape law reform in Pakistan.
“Although we do not have formal relations, I would like to convey my best wishes on your election as president of Pakistan for a second term,” Peres wrote in a letter made public on Monday. “You have shown responsibility and strength in preventing the spread of violence and terrorism on many occasions and I carry in my heart your support for peace in the Middle East which I heard directly from you.” Israel and Pakistan, the world’s second-most populous Muslim country, have no official relations.
However, President Pervez Musharraf and the now coma-stricken former Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon shook hands on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in September 2005. Two weeks earlier, the foreign ministers from the two countries had met in the first such high-level encounter aimed to help normalise relations. afp
He may not be the perfect president but Pervez Musharraf has a few fans in Israel, anyway.
He may not be the perfect but he's closer to it than his opposition.
ReplyDeleteEven without the jihadists hot after Musharraf's head, Peres may as well have offered to paint an even bigger target on his chest. Musharraf thanking Israel would be like Hillary thanking bin laden for his endorsement of her candidacy.
ReplyDeleteThis is just another example of the weakness of the current, butt-kissing Israeli government. Peres puts on a tough show when talking about Iran, but only cause he knows every other government is angry with Tehran too.
