"Crooks & Liars" Discovers Best Way to Defend Rep. Pete Stark

Lie.

Nutrooters Crooks and Liars discovers that if you can't possibly win an argument over the latest disgusting anti-military, anti-Bush remarks by a Democratic politician...
Then just lie about it.

This is how Crooks and Liars reported the remarks by Rep. Pete Stark said on the House Floor on Thursday:

“I’m just amazed that the Republicans are worried that we can’t pay for insuring an additional 10 million children. They sure don’t care about finding $200 billion to fight the illegal War in Iraq."

"President Bush’s statements about children’s health shouldn’t be taken any more seriously than his lies about the War in Iraq. The truth is that that Bush just likes to blow things up – in Iraq, in the United States, and in Congress."
And... Here is what Rep. Pete Stark actually said on the House Floor on Thursday that was so outrageous and offensive:

"They sure don't care about finding $200 billion to fight the illegal war in Iraq. Where are you going to get that money? Are you going to tell us lies like you're telling us today? Is that how you're going to fund the war? You don't have money to fund the war or children but you're going to spend it to blow up innocent people if we can get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for the President's amusement."
Got that?
In case you need further proof HERE is the video of Rep. Stark's outrageous attacks on the troops (blowing up innocent people), and on President Bush (get enough kids to grow old enough for you to send to Iraq to get their heads blown off for President's amusement):

Crooks and Liars decided that if they couldn't win the argument they could always just misreport what was said!
Brilliant but Dishonest
Brilliantly Dishonest...
Crooked Liars???

Oh, and it looks like the Kool Aid kids are with them...
In their poll on whether Rep. Pete Stark should apologize for bashing the troops and the president:

99% of the Nutroots say "No!"

UPDATE: Hah! The Crooks & Liars decided to post the full text to Stark's ugly rant later in the day. (That is why I posted the snapshot of their blog earlier.)
They said it was a "problem with coding."
Of course.

UPDATE 2: LGF reports that Crooks & Liars are deleting their comments now as fast as they're posted.

The Jawa Report has more.

Somebody needs to give Crazy Pete Stark a senility test.

Pete Stark voted "No" on the 1997 budget reconciliation bill that created SCHIP.

  4. Pete Stark should only apologize for misstating "for the presidents amusement". It should have read "for our amusement" otherwise what the hell would the dems have to be so ridicules over? Child health care? Civiifrsyl rights? Starvation in America? What the heck am I thinking. They are truly amusing just being themselves.

I prefer to hope that this is merely the most VERBAL part of the Democratic Party. Hopefully there is still a sane silent majority that won't be cowed by the virulent hate of the nutters.

Statements and antics like these have really lowered my already diminished impression of the US Congress. I fear that McCain-Feingold may have backed our political process up against the wall, forcing the politicians to become even more enslaved by the special interests.

When will the respect and civility return to this great institution of freedom?

They did offer a link to video of Stark. I wonder if Crooks and Liars has analyzed their database and found out that the loon left avoids watching actual primary source material (videos) and prefers their news bent?

That 99% are against apology indicates that either no one took time to watch old Piccolo Pete; or the loons are very poorly mannered.

    Or both.

There's a misunderstanding, because multiple (different) YouTube clips of Stark are floating around.

Gateway Pundit's clip is about 25 seconds. Crooks & Liars' clip is 2+ minutes ( see it here).

C&L quoted 2 paragraphs from Stark's speech, and GP quoted 1. You both seem to have quoted correctly. C&L's quote is merely missing two sets of ellipses.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Anonymous2:18 PM

There is no misunderstanding. The story is about specific and widely repeated quotes made by Stark. That C&L is ignoring the entire story and insterting its own, different quotes is irrelevant, and dishonest.

    cupples,

here's the headline at the C&L peice:

"Ring Wing goes bonkers over Rep. Pete Stark’s comments"

in order to avoid the charge of dishonesty, amato was obligated show those comments over which the "ring wing" went "bonkers".

instead, he chose to show some other comments made by stark which were not apparently obnoxious and malign, and over which the republicans consequently did not go "bonkers".

he made this choice deliberately in order to lie to his audience; to tell them that "ring wingers" are going "bonkers" over fairly standard anti-war rhetoric, when in fact, us on the "ring" take legitimate offence at starks imputation that president bush derives amusement and satisfaction from deaths in iraq, among other conceits.

the irony here is that of course this sort of rhetoric in which people who disagree with progressives are portrayed as monsters who enjoy suffering like they were vampires, or are nazis and such, is itself fairly standard anti-war rhetoric.

amato's commenting community is an orgy of such seething, irrational hatred of the political "other" and they are fed by john every quarter hour with red meat of precisely this sort of loaded, deceptive composition.

john amato lies, and you are acting here as his stooge.

    Hi Tom B,

I see what you're saying. The only way around it would have been for C&L (and Gateway Pundit) to quote ALL paragraphs. What C&L did print was pretty inflamatory, so I doubt C&L was trying to soften anything.

Most people don't quote whole speeches: I DON'T think Gateway Pundit lied when printing only one paragraph, and I don't think C&L lied when printing two different ones.

I may have misunderstood, but in the longer YouTube clip, Stark says something to the effect that Bush wants to send innocent Americans (when they're old enough)to war to get their heads blown off. He also said that innocent Iraqis have been killed.

The longer YouTube might be worth another listen.

You guys are getting all worked up over a fake blog. Crooks & Liars is what's known as a left gatekeeper blog; their job is to pretend to be leftist (earning their "credibility" with plenty of Bush-bashing) and then use that "credibility" to manage discourse, diverting discussion away from areas most harmful to the regime. They will take things right up to the edge but they know how much they can say and what they can't say. On the most important issues they are obfuscators and distractors, discourse channelers, not genuine leftists. Just like Daily Kos, Huffington Post, MyDD, Democratic Underground, Moxie Grrrl, Educational Whisper, The American Prospect, Mother Jones, Salon, The Nation, Sadly No!, My Left Wing, etc. These kind of sites, though appearing to foam at the mouth with vitriol against the right wingers, are actually doing the regime a favor by limiting discussion on matters to keep it within parameters safe for the regime. If you don't believe me, try posting something on for example Crooks & Liars that says: People in the reality-based community should have no problem whatsoever in realizing that the uppermost portion of a skyscraper is not going to be able to "fall" into and THROUGH the remaining vast majority of solid building as quickly, meaning as effortlessly as falling through air without something else (i.e. explosives) reducing said majority of building to such a state of offering no more resistance than air. Can we all agree on that? Sounds pretty straightforward; solid things offer vastly more resistance than air. Anyone who graduated elementary school SHOULD be able to grasp this, and SHOULD be able to therefore grasp that the Twin Towers and WTC # 7 building had to have been controlled demolitions. It is literally COMMON SENSE.

See what happens. I'll tell you what happens: Anyone posting on Crooks & Liars who says anything that in any way questions the impossible official myth of 9/11 gets banned from commenting.

Want to see how Markos Moulitsas of Daily Kos fame has ties to the C.I.A.? Read here:

    http://wagnews.blogspot.com/2005/07/daily-kos-outs-itself-as-controlled.html

So you conservatives should be glad. The establishment doesn't NEED to create phony gatekeeper blogs for you guys, since you are ALREADY spouting the establishment's talking points. They've already got you; it's only on the liberal side of the aisle where they practice discourse control, so enjoy your free speech conservatives. You guys are free to say whatever you want; us on the Left have to contend with not only you asshats but the establishment's gatekeepers planted in our midst to keep the discussions from veering into dangerous territory. So just be glad you aren't able to think for yourselves.

We've heard it over and over and over. Your continued baying at the moon only provides further evidence that you're paranoid idiots. The whole world is not against you. It's just that, after reviewing the SAME evidence ourselves and, having rational, sound, and logical minds, (something you quite obviously lack) we've come to realize that all of you are completely nuts.

Because of your continued yapping, literally everyone is now convinced that you all have mental and emotional issues. You've gone far beyond being clowns to being real pains in the ass. It's called schiz·o·phre·ni·a - which is: "Any of a group of psychotic disorders usually characterized by withdrawal from reality, illogical patterns of thinking, delusions, and hallucinations, and accompanied in varying degrees by other emotional, behavioral, or intellectual disturbances."

This definition fits each of you to a tee. It fits every cockamamie theory your delusional minds have come up with. You are heroes and saviors of the world only in your soggy and limped dreams. You are sorry, sad fools to the rest of the world.

Please take your lithium or whatever it is that your doctor prescribed. If you don't' have a shrink, find one. They can help you lead a normal, happy life.

Michael J. Mathias: Innocent people have died at the hands of US troops. This is true. It was also true during WWII. Does that mean that US troops fought WWII just so FDR could get off on watching his soldiers die? No. Similarly, saying that innocent people have died in Iraq ignores two things: (1) many, many more innocent Iraqis have died at the hands of the insurgents; and (2) just because innocent people have died in Iraq doesn't mean we're there only to kill innocent people.

bill w: The difference is, C&L portrayed the Republicans as being upset over a comment they're not actually upset about. Then they include the whole clip. Nevertheless, they are focusing on some of Stark's less objectionable comments and saying the right-wing bloggers are going nuts over it, when right-wing bloggers are actually going nuts over his most objectionable comment, the one quoted here. C&L didn't lie about what he said, they lied about what we're angry about.

Mr. Controlled Demolitions: If you want to tell me how the heck they would cover up all the effort required to set up a controlled demolition in what was one of the most crowded places in the world (actually, two of the most crowded buildings of the world), then tell me how an exploding plane doesn't exert enough force to cause building collapse, go on ahead. Till then, I'll assume you're a moron like all the other conspiracy theorists.

And if you spout theories like this at those lefty blogs, including the one that they're just stooges for Bush pretending to hate him, somehow I'm not surprised you get banned. Your "tests" are self-fulfilling prophecy: "Look! I got a comment deleted for saying something that's obviously not true! Therefore the whole blog is set up to keep me from exercising my freedom of speech! And therefore ALL the left-wing blogs are doing this! Because there's no way at all that I could SET UP MY OWN BLOG, which isn't dominated by the mean tyrannical government, to spout my conspiracy theories! Aren't I smart!"

  51. anonymous @ 8:53 PM asked: "juandos: I heard it at something like 72% (of children who would have private insurance without the SCHIP expansion), but I can't find the source"...

Hey A, I assume you looked at the supposedly non-partisan CBO report and the way its worded leaves more questions than answers...

Cheryl Smith and Robert E. Moffit, Ph.D. of the Heritage Foundation penned the following (August 1, 2007) you might find interesting: The House SCHIP Bill: Cutting Medicare, Undercutting Private Coverage, and Expanding Dependency
Expands Government Health Coverage to Middle-Income Adults and Fosters Greater Dependency on Government. The authors of the House bill repudiate the original intent of the program: SCHIP is no longer limited to low-income persons or to children. House sponsors achieve this expansion by simply redefining both "low-income" and "children." Under the bill, eligibility for government coverage would be extended to families with incomes up to 400 percent above the federal poverty level (FPL)—$82,600 for a family of four—hardly considered low-income by any reasonable standard.[5] The House policy is transparently absurd: 89 percent of all children between 300 percent and 400 percent of the FPL are enrolled in private health insurance; 77 percent of all children between 200 percent and 300 percent of the FPL are enrolled in private health insurance; and 50 percent of all children between 100 percent and 200 percent of the FPL are enrolled in private health insurance.[6]

What's thoroughly hysterical about the S-CHIP scam is that according to a note to Rep. Charlie Rangel from the CBO a large portion of the funding depends on people using tabacco products and considering how the libtards are pushing non-smoking laws all over the country, I see a problem developing that can only mean it will be solved by higher taxes somewhere else...

S-CHIP expansion is not about 'the children'
A Heritage Foundation study found that a leading S-CHIP expansion proposal would actually give "free" (taxpayer-funded) coverage to some families considered so wealthy they will have to pay the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT). Levied on high-income households, the AMT was created to block "the rich" from avoiding their fair share of taxes.

Just because there's video that shows the best and worst (mostly worst) of what Stark actually said doesn't mean that using sanitized quotes in a post about Republicans getting angry about Stark's worst lines isn't wrong. If they want issues, I'll give 'em issues:
    1. Most wars have been "illegal", strictly speaking. Hell, Clinton fought one or two of 'em.
    2. Saying that we're spending $200 billion on Iraq but not $35 billion on healthcare ignores the fact that the $200 billion is already committed, unless we want to pull out - and why pull out when we're starting to win? (Of course, they still think it's hopeless, that our only choice is to pull out, etc etc etc...and then they say that we don't understand the horrors of war because we want to stay and fight. Go figure.) When you fight, other bits of the budget necessarily get squeezed - why expand the program now, when we're fighting?
    3. Well, Stark makes no real point about SCHIP (just "OMG 10 MILLION CHILDREN"), so I don't feel all that obliged to answer him there. Except his point that SCHIP would work through private insurance companies, which could retain free-market pressures or could lead to a Lockheed-type situation, and I don't know enough to dispute that point. And there's other reasons why I'd vote against SCHIP if I could, like the whole "we'll pay for it with cigarettes" issue.

Of course, what I've written would probably still be deleted, given their attitude towards the rest of what I said.
