"Sunni Tribal leaders from Dhi-Qar province distance themselves from Takfiries and pledge their support to the political process and elected government"Haider Ajina comments:
The governor of Iraq’s Dhi-Qar province Aziz Khadum Alwan received a delegation of Sunni tribal leaders of the Dhi-Qar who are member of the Dhi-Qar tribal chamber. The delegation handed the governor a copy of a speech given by the Chair of the delegation Sheik Ahmed AbdulRazaq after Friday prayer. The speech he delivered made very clear the mission of the Tribal Chamber which guides its actions. Sheik AbdulRazaq acknowledged the danger of the Takfiri fatwas and its deviation from Islam and the importance of combating and fighting the Takfiries and their deviant ideas. He also called for the support of the government and its local administrative and security representatives.
Dhi-Qar province is a mostly Muslim Shiite province with some Mandaeans (followers of John the Baptist). Sunni Tribal leaders in Dhi-Qar province are speaking out loudly against Takfiries and against those trying to disrupt the political process in Iraq. Since the Alqida Takfiries are Sunnis, the Sunnis in Dhi-Qar are speaking out to disassociate themselves from these Takfiries as well as call for fighting these Takfiries. They also denounce the Takfiri deviant ideology and calling it non Muslim. These are all positive steps towards a united Iraq against the terrorists and for a representative government. While Iraq, as any free society, will never be fully united behind any political cause (nor should they) they are however uniting against the Takfiries and intolerance and they are uniting to protect their minorities.Regards,
Haider Ajina
MORE... Michael Yon agrees- Al Qaeda is beaten in Iraq. (Via Instapundit)
...And, give credit to Michael Yon for being one of the first to report it.
But Al-Qaeda can still count on the MSM, thankfully.
That alliance is still unshakable.
Say Anything has more on the confusion in the media today.
Bob Calvert of TalkingWithHeroes.com has his latest video from Iraq reporting on the political progress in Baghdad:
Alphabet City has much more from Bob Calvert.
And... Jeff Emanuel posted a moving story of heroism and courage from inside Iraq- with some amazing photos.
With the boogie men taken care of, can we start heading our boys home now? I bet there will be another "reason" to keep them in Iraq. It's almost like THE mission is just to keep folks killing in Iraq. It is the ONE thing this administration has been able to do consistently.
ReplyDeleteIf I recall correctly, al Qaeda was found, by Military Intelligence reports last July, to constitute between 6 and 10% of the "insurgents" in Iraq. The remainder being Shia ans Sunni militias and the Kurdish PKK.
ReplyDeleteSo, to "vanquish" al Qaeda in Iraq (but not Afghanistan and Pakistan, its original and primary home) we are now arming and training BOTH sides in the Iraqi civil war.
Al Qaeda in Iraq was never the main problem--it has always been the civil war between Shia and Sunni, and within those broad categories, conflicts among various tribes and clans. If AQI has been rejected/defeated by Sunnis, who are their more natural possible allies (since Osama Bin Laden and AQ are Sunnis), doesn't this undercut the administrations rationale for staying in Iraq? We're told we must avoid a "failed state" in which AQ could create a stronghold, as they did when the Taliban ran Afghanistan. But even in the midst of sectarian strife, this isn't happening, and there's no reason to believe it would after we left, and the resources of the insurgents could all be devoted to fighting them, not us.
ReplyDeleteAlso, while the addition of 30,000 more troops seems to have lowered the death toll among both Iraqis and our troops, it hasn't done a thing to enhance political progress.
Time to declare victory and go home.
Dear trey, philadelphia steve, and anonymous,
ReplyDeleteImportant safety tip: ditch the half-assed assertions, parlor leftist dialectic, demonstrably incorrect "facts," and Party-approved talking points. They're sooooooooooo 2006.
As for anonymous's flippant assertion that "Al Qaeda was never the main problem," he (or she) had better go back and review Al Qaeda's own public pronouncements over the past several years: It clearly viewed itself as "the main problem" for the Coalition and loudly proclaimed this on a regular basis. Indeed, AQI took every opportunity to back up its words with assorted massacres, homicide bombings, chemical bomb attacks, online decapitations, and other depredations too numerous to easily count.
But then, you'd already know this if you were a regular Michael Yon reader, wouldn't you?
Re: "Time to declare victory and go home."
ReplyDeleteActually that is exactly what is happening. However its form is not what you think.
The "Declare victory and go home" will take place when George W. Bush runs out the clock to January 2009, declares "we were winning the war in Iraq while I was President", then goes home to Crawford, Texas, boasting all the way.
Someone else will have to clean up his mess, and many more will have to die, all so that the fragile ego of one man is not harmed.
And every single Conservative in America will repeat George W. Bush's chant, because they are more loyal to him than they are to the United States.
Re: "As for anonymous's flippant assertion that "Al Qaeda was never the main problem," he (or she) had better go back and review Al Qaeda's own public pronouncements over the past several years: It clearly viewed itself as "the main problem" for the Coalition and loudly proclaimed this on a regular basis."
ReplyDeleteUnlike Conservatives who "Create their own reality" (a Quote from the White House), reality has a say in this.
Al Qaeda can issue all the press releases it wants. However the facts are otherwise.
If a press release was as much "reality" as Conservatives want to believe, then everyone would have believed "Major combat operations are over in Iraq", or "Iraqi oil money will pay for the occupation", or "The insurgency is on its last legs".
However wishful thinking appears to be reality for Conservatives, so they 100% believe all of the Bush Administration press releases... Blind, unthinking obedience and belief from "The Decider" appears to be the hallmark of an American Conservative.
George Orwell would recognize it immediately.

TAMIMI, JIBOURI TRIBES UPHOLD RECONCILIATION IN DIYALA
excerpts:
[The top three Shia sheiks of the Tamimi tribe and the top two Sunni sheiks of the Jibouri tribe attended the meeting, which was hosted by Diyala’s governor, Ra'ad Hameed al-Mula Jowad al-Tamimi. Six additional prominent sheiks from throughout the province were in attendance as well to discuss how reconciliation has improved their tribal areas.]
[“All we can do is worry about and take care of the living.
We do this as a weapon to stand against al-Qaeda.”
“We cannot clap with one hand,” Aeman continued. “These
two great tribes will act as one – one person, one tribe.”
“And when Jibouri and Tamimi clap, the world will hear. All
terrorists and all militias will be like insects caught between
our hands,” he said.
“They will be crushed – crushed between
the two hands of Jibouri and Tamimi.”]

How many times have we heard, "we are turning the corner in Iraq" before?
ReplyDeleteI no longer beleive the mouthpieces of the Bush Administration, or its sycophant posters here and elsewhere.
The only real "turn" will come when the most incompetent president in US history has completed running out the clock to January 2009 and someone else has to clean up his mess.
And ther is not one single Conservative who will dare to disagree with the Party Line enough to admit how badly The Bush Administration has botched the occupation of Iraq, and mush lives and treasure have been wasted by that incompetence.
Conservatives are tooloyal to George W. Bush to ever say anything approaching that.
needing to believe in your fantasy so badly that your citing al Qaeda... anything else they have to say that turns your wheels?

He described another nearby area, Sadiyah, as probably “the toughest that is out there now.”]

Great Progress On Iraqi Economic Front
excerpt:
[Almaliki then addressed the economy by saying. "On the economic front we have much to be proud of, unemployment has declined from 50% to 20% and inflation has gone down from 60% to 16%, these are tremendous achievements. Almaliki then went on to speak about developments in national reconciliation. He said that reconciliation does not mean dividing the country like a piece of pie or giving position to the nonqualified. Reconciliation is built on national sublime foundations. He warned that not all who fly the reconciliation banner want reconciliation. Some still have the mentality of tribalism and totalitarianism and want to turn the clocks back, while they appear in the media calling for reconciliation. Of those we need to be careful. Reconciliation
is in the hands of those who want to see prosperity for Iraq.]

ReplyDeletePromise and prediction.
ReplyDeleteI will apologized and agree about the "great and glorious progress we are making in Iraq" if we are not hearing about the "great and glorious progress we are making in Iraq" a year from now.
We have been hearing about "the great and glorious progress we are making in Iraq" since June of 2003.
A challenge to Conservatives;
If we are still hearing about "the great and glorious progress we are making in Iraq", but actual conditions on the ground are no different than today (or 2006 or 2005 or 2004), other than the civil war battles have moved from one neighborhood to another, will even a single Conservative admit we have been hoodwinked by the Bush White House, again?
We already know the answer is, "no". That there is absolutely no end to the slogans that Conservatives are eprepared to accept from the president they all equate with Abraham Lincoln.
By the way. Some of my phrasings above are somewhat akward. i was typing quickly. However I can predict that some Conservative will selectively cut and paste some comments as a means of "proving" that "we are making great and glorious progress in Iraq", based solely on the way the words can be strung together.
That is because, to a Conservative, a cutely parsed comment is the same as physical accomplishments.
BG, outside of you and me, this thread is full of clowns and jokers. Not to mention they appear to be blind, deaf and seriously Dumb.

Iraqi Islamic Party says, “Al Qaeda is Defeated.”
excerpts:
[“Al Qaeda in Iraq is defeated,” according to Sheik Omar Jabouri, spokesman for the Iraqi Islamic Party and a member of the widespread and influential Jabouri Tribe. Speaking through an interpreter at a 31 October meeting at the Iraqi Islamic Party headquarters in downtown Baghdad, Sheik Omar said that al Qaeda had been “defeated mentally, and therefore is defeated physically,” referring to how clear it has become that the terrorist group’s tactics have backfired. Operatives who could once disappear back into the crowd after committing an increasingly atrocious attack no longer find safe haven among the Iraqis who live in the southern part of Baghdad. They are being hunted down and killed. Or, if they are lucky, captured by Americans.]
[During the meeting, another member of the Iraqi Islamic Party said that al Qaeda has changed its strategy now that fomenting civil war between Sunni and Shia has backfired. Al Qaeda has shifted targets, now trying to generate friction between tribes. This time, however, the tribes are onto the game early, and they are not playing.
Sheik Omar, who has gained the respect of American combat leaders for his intelligence and organizational skills, said the tough line against al Qaeda is also enforced at the tribal level. According to Sheik Omar, the Jabouri tribe, too, is actively committed to destroying al Qaeda. So much so, that Jabouri tribal leaders have decided they would “kill their own sons” if any aided al Qaeda.]
[Omar’s influence extends beyond tribal and party levels, to include important channels within the Iraqi government and the US military in Baghdad, as evidenced by the agenda of the hours-long meeting. But for the talk about al Qaeda, the focus was mostly on other topics, such as returning displaced persons to their homes, efficiently delivering basic services and jumpstarting the economy. In fact, more and more meetings in Iraq are turning to day-to-day business, and less time is required on military and security topics like targeting and addressing intelligence-type matters, which until recently monopolized most meetings across Iraq.]

To you delirious trolls....52% of actual Americans now see the necessity of, and agree with the notion of, taking out (that's bombing, to you lefties) iran's nuclear program. Once the Iraq front in the WOT is secured by the Iraqi government, we'll be free to engage the NEXT member of the Axis of Evil. Islamo-fascism is manifested world-wide, partly due to the head-in-the-sand approach of the Clintons. As such, it must be defeated in detail, just as it has been in Iraq. Syria knows we are coming, and thought they could get nukes before we got around to them. Guess THEY found out! Every terrorist-supporting country in the world (ie: everyone buying Russian air "defense" systems....LOL) is rethinking their position. Your fixation on the War in Iraq, without the least thought to the actual scope and threat of islamo-fascist activities, and the tactics and time required to eliminate them, is delusional, infantile, and filled with you own hopes for the defeat of our military, including your arch-enemy, American Patriots. Too bad for you. Adults are in charge. As for your collective nonsense and whining, boo-hoo. Tell your incompetent, democrat "leadership" to simply defund the War. Until they do, just sit back and watch victory happen. And try not to choke on your own bile, as our country kills al qaida (aka your best friends).
ReplyDelete"Once the Iraq front in the WOT is secured by the Iraqi government, we'll be free to engage the NEXT member of the Axis of Evil. "
ReplyDeleteBut, according to you Conservatives, that will not happen for another forty years, right?
"Tell your incompetent, democrat "leadership" to simply defund the War. "
ReplyDeleteThey won't do that.
While Conservatives are very willing to allow troops to die for lack of funding or equipment (such as in the pre-press revelations VA, or when our troops did not have sufficient body armor because the Loyal Bushies were handing out billion dollar contracts to their cronies), the Demodcrats consider it more important that the troops have sufficient funds for the equipment.
That is the difference between Democrats and Republicans. Demcorats will compromise and allow the "other team" to win, rather than risk loss of life or support of the troops.
Republicans would not be bothered in the least at how many of our soldiers died, if it meant that they could score political points through it (for example the way Republicans are now working as hard as they can to help George W. Bush run out the clock to January 2009 without his ever having to even once admit that HE made even one single mistake in his occupation of Iraq).
Democrats put their loyalty to their country above that of their party. For Republicans it is the other way around.
Well, philly steve, you seem to have forgotten the election of '06. and its aftermath, when your "leaders" promised to end the war based on the election "mandate." Your babbling is a poor disguise for democrat incompetence and lack of patriotism. Perhaps you missed Rep. Obey's promise to starve the troops by denying them supplies? Why are Move-on.org and the Daily Kos so vitriolic towards the pelosi/reid maroons if your statements are credible? Sorry, but I've lost interest in your nonsense. Go tell it to OBL.

this is an amzing display of the delusion of the extreme far right. if you do not agree with them and their faulty analogies, and hyperbole, and straw man arguments then you are un-patriotic, dumb, clowns, or jokers. especially this latest childish rhyme by bg...funny. meanwhile in the real world we see memos from rummy talking about ratcheting up fear to muster support for a failing policy. this latest memo dump provides yet another window into a civilian leadership that is anti-democratic, closed minded, and most importantly extremely manipulative. while the far right, exemplified by folks on this thread, accuse others of not thinking it is clear that it is they who have been manipulated by this administrations fear-mongering. perhaps they should stop and think.
ReplyDeleteRe: "Well, philly steve, you seem to have forgotten the election of '06. and its aftermath, when your "leaders" promised to end the war based on the election "mandate."

Ramadi: Building on Success
excerpts:
[What a difference a year makes.
From 200 local citizens joining the Iraqi Police forces in 2006, there are now in excess of 8,000 trained Police in Ramadi today. There is more electricity in Ramadi than any other city in the country, normally including Baghdad. Schools have re-opened throughout the city; the two grade schools once guarded by Alpha Co. 1/6 today have 2,000+ students studying daily. They ran a 5K race through the center of the city in September, as a way of announcing to the world that "Ramadi has survived." Essential services such as sewers are being repaired, and water treatment and sewage plant was rebuilt also – much to the relief of the local citizens.]
[Lead by a troop of Ramadi Boy Scouts, and followed by a new unit of Ramadi Girl Scouts, approximately 2,000 Iraqi Police and Iraqi Army marched through the streets of Ramadi in the Al Anbar Unity Parade which was held in honor of Sheikh Sattar Abu Risha. More that 300 sheikhs and dignitaries attended the parade which was planned and executed by provincial and tribal leadership. The event was covered on Iraqi television, and in the Iraqi news, as some twenty Arab media attended to cover the event.
The western mainstream media, unfortunately, missed covering it, as well as the significance that in no other city in Iraq can such a parade be safely held. And while an AP article of 28 October mentioned disapprovingly that 135 Army and Marines have died in Anbar Province this year, a interesting comparison is that these 135 deaths are less than half the 2007 murder rate in Philadelphia – it's measurably safer to live in Ramadi than Philadelphia today.]
[There is an economic boom taking place: there are rebuilding projects; the porcelain factory is being re-opening next month, shops are re-opening, and better-quality food and goods are for sale in the markets - and salaries have risen 20 % in the last six months. For as Mayor Latif Obaid said to me in April when I attended his 3rd Economic Development Conference," Ramadi is open for business – come visit us!"]

ReplyDeleteKidnapped Sheiks Tell Of Their Daring Rescue
excerpts:
[BAGHDAD – It had to be done quickly. Rogue Shiite militiamen were holding hostage a group of Sunni and Shiite tribal sheiks who had joined a revolt against al-Qaeda in Iraq. For the Iraqi government and its U.S. backers, the seven men represented a rare symbol of national unity.
A daring rescue operation secured their freedom.
A meeting yesterday between most of the former captives and military officials, including the Iraqi commander of the rescue operation, offered the first detailed picture of the tense and fast-moving events: the kidnapping, the slaying of one captive and the rescue mission Monday.
The sheiks, recounting their 30-hour ordeal, said they were tortured and humiliated. At least three sheiks were visibly bruised. One man's left eye was red and swollen. The two others had bruises on their backs, arms and legs.
Haroon al-Mohammedawi, the leader of the group from Khalis, where al-Qaeda in Iraq has a heavy presence, said: “We already forgot the pain and the wounds from our ordeal. We pledge to you, the people and leadership of Iraq, that we will stay the course.”]
[Sunni and Shia sheiks were meeting to work and find a way to be cooperative in the fight against the insurgency.
Of course that begs the question still of who makes up the insurgency. Although the bulk of the fighters have always been Iraqis, the leadership, organization, and/or logistical support is almost all foreign at this point.
Al Qaeda in Iraq is quickly receding into past tense. Although they initially attracted Iraqi foot soldiers, their leadership, funding, and organization was always foreign led.]
[This meeting is another example of the complexity of Iraq and dispels in part the myth that Sunnis and Shias cannot work together.
Another note from this story is how it was an Iraqi Security Forces operation. I am sure the rest of the Coalition helped out, but ISF troops are doing more and more of the heavy lifting each day.]
btw: anyone else noted that the Iraqis who have switched allegiance (well the ones we're fortunate enough to hear from anyways) sound more like team GWB.. and the enemy, AQ et al, sound just like team Dhimmicrats..

ReplyDeletere: Anbar leaders stress on partnership with the United States
excerpts:
[Leaders of Anbar province reiterated in their meeting with President George W. Bush the strong partnership with the US forces in Iraq. The Iraqi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Rafeh Al-Issawi told KUNA that the Anbar delegation stressed in the meeting with Bush on the necessity of a neutral government that represents all Iraqis and that Bush showed special interest in knowing about the negative role of Iran in Iraq.]
["The Iraqi army is still fragile to protect the country from external influence", he added.
After slipping into the hands of Al-Qaeda in Iraq with a tragic rate of violence, leaders from Anbar started in the last quarter of 2006 a reconciliation process with the Iraqi central government and with coalition forces in Iraq to counter the influence of Al-Qaeda and restore security and stability to their area. President Bush, in return, declared the troops surge in Iraq last January deploying 4,000 US marines in Anbar.
Sheikh Ahmdad argued that "when the Iraqi army becomes national and complete not based on sectarianism then the US army would subsequently withdraw" from Iraq and affirmed "we are not bothered" by the presence of the coalitions forces.
He expressed opposition to "anyone carrying weapons in a non legal manner", noting that he supports Bush position on Iranian influence that is backing up "some political groups in Iraq".
Anbar Governor Maamoun Sami Rashid Al-Awani said that a US withdrawal from Iraq is "against the interests of Iraqis and Americans", disclosing that Anbar province meet on a monthly basis with coalition forces to assess the readiness of local police to assume responsibility.]
[Chairman of Anbar Provincial Council Abdul-Salam Abdullah stressed on the importance of the existence of "a neutral government, that does not support any party, under a unified Iraq" and warned from any plans to divide Iraq on sectarian basis since this could endanger "peace and security in Iraq and the world".]
