Al Qaeda Threatens American Poodle... Libyan leader Gadhafi(?)

Al Qaeda lost in Iraq... Now they've lost their minds.

This image from video released by IntelCenter on Saturday, Nov. 3, 2007 shows a photo of Ayman al-Zawahri as part of an audiotaped speech harshly criticizing Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi in a new audio tape Saturday, accusing him of being an enemy of Islam and threatening a wave of attacks against the North African country because it improved relations with the United States. A new Al-Qaeda tape lashes out at American lackey Moammar Gadhafi.
The AP reported:

CAIRO, Egypt - Al-Qaida's No. 2 figure harshly criticized Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi in a new audio tape Saturday, accusing him of being an enemy of Islam and threatening a wave of attacks against the North African country because it improved relations with the U.S.

In the 28-minute audio tape called "Unity of the Ranks," Ayman al-Zawahri also announced that the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group was joining ranks with al-Qaida.

"The Islamic nation is witnessing a blessed step ... The brothers are escalating the confrontation against the enemies of Islam: Gadhafi and his masters, the Washington crusaders," al-Zawahri said in the audio tape. The recording could not be independently verified, but it appeared on a Web site commonly used by insurgents and carried the logo of al-Qaida's media production house, as-Sahab.

The recording also carried a message from Abu Laith al-Libi, a Libyan al-Qaida commander in Afghanistan who accused Gadhafi of decades of tyranny.

"He is the tyranny of Libya and is dragging the country to the swamp," al-Libi said in the recording that also featured old video footage of him walking with other masked gunmen.

"After long years, he (Gadhafi) discovered suddenly that America is not an enemy ... and is turning Libya into another crusader base," said al-Libi, who has appeared in several recent al-Qaida videos.
Al Zawahiri must have owed this guy Abu Laith al-Libi or lost a bet or something.
Al Qaeda is really slipping since Osama admitted defeat in Iraq.

  2. If I remember correctly Gadaffi (or however it is spelled at the moment) has been a target of Zawahiri's ire since the late 1970's. In an effort to curb Muslim Brotherhood influence in Libya, Gadaffi decided to set up his *own* world-wide Muslim organization that, of course, was obedient to him. Well the clerics, scholars and radicals in MB would not sanction that! Zawahiri has always had a gripe against Gadaffi, to the point that Gadaffi has been in the 'Top 5 al Qaeda Hate List' since Zawahiri and bin Laden formed al Qaeda, usually coming in fourth after the US, Israel and the Saudi Royal Family.

Way out at the extreme fringes of al Qaeda's network, there are a very few operatives that will have some association with Gadaffi's brand of global Islam, but its for the money and supplies, not the teachings.

It is very telling that Zawahiri would decide that now is a good time to re-emphasize #4 on the list... almost like going after #1-3 isn't working out too well...

As a member of the U.S. Navy who took part in actions against Libyan assets in 1986, I never thought I would hear the phrase "American Poodle" in reference to Gadhafi.

  5. Be a damn shame if a Libyan-backed agent assassinated al-Zawahiri.

al qaida's admission that they have to threaten still another of their supporters is most telling. The pattern of desperate moves continues apace. Good news for us all. Bad news for iran and syria.

UN Security Council leader "vanishes" from Darfur quagmire...

    Libya’s Gadhafi squanders diplomatic opportunity
    http://www.kansascity.com/news/world/story/344771.html

On his biggest stage in years — launching new peace talks for Sudan’s Darfur region in his home city of Sirte, Libya — Gadhafi delivered a meandering and often insulting monologue, declaring the negotiations a lost cause and assailing Western countries for meddling in African affairs.

I always say: Leave these problems to their own people,” Gadhafi said. He later added: “I feel this conference of ours should stop at this point.”

After the speech, he vanished, leaving the work of solving one of the world’s deadliest and most intractable conflicts to the U.N. and African envoys he had just criticized.

The diplomatic effort has indeed stalled, crippled less by the former revolutionary’s dismissive rhetoric than by the decision of key rebel leaders to boycott the talks. But the entire episode left Darfur rebels scratching their heads, diplomats muttering “no comment” and one message above all: Gadhafi isn’t ready for prime time.

It was about the most astonishing statement I’ve ever heard a head of state make,” a veteran Western observer said.
