Swat is celebrated throughout the world as the holy land of Buddhist learning and piety. Swat is a place of Buddhist pilgrimage. There were more than 400 Buddhist sites covering and area of 160 Km in Swat valley- Not any more.
Islamists bombed the Buddhist statue again in Swat on Saturday night.
This time they blew it's head off.

Peshawar, Nov 6 : The historic statue of Buddha in the Jihan Abad area of Swat district in Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province (NWFP) has been blown up by unidentified militants.
The destruction of the historic monument took place on Saturday night, Muhammad Aqleem, Deputy Curator of Swat Museum, said.
"This is second attack on the seventh century statue of Buddha. The fresh attack caused irreparable loss to its head and also damaged its shoulders," he added.
Aqleem maintained that the statue belonged to seventh century A.D, and it was the most complete and inspiring symbol of Gandahara Art.
After the historic statues of Bamiyan in Afghanistan, which were destroyed by the Taliban, the Swat statue was the sole example of Buddhist cultural heritage.
"It was seven meters tall and 20 feet high from the land, showing Buddha in meditation. I don't know what they want to achieve by such actions," The News quoted Aqleem, as saying.
Aqleem said he had reported the incident to the local police but he did not think that the police would be able to protect Buddhist cultural sites in Swat, as they themselves were the victims of terrorist attacks. (ANI)

ReplyDeleteIt might be prudent for the Europeans to begin planning a way to ship the works of Western art out of the continent. Since they are offering no resistence to islamic conquest this kind of thing is to be expected there as well.
ReplyDeleteThey already have plans to do so. The Major museums in London and Paris worked out arrangements with museums in the US, Australia and Canada to house everything they can move. They did this about 5 years or so ago. I remember seeing it as a small article on the wire services at that time, it was one of those blink and you miss it things. I recall it because it was a very unusual thing to read of such an agreement, and the agreement was not just for limited items but whole collections. Despite the rather casual wording of the article it was fairly obvious that the governments of those countries knew deep down in their hearts that there was a very distinct possibility of their great collections of art, books and artifacts were in danger of being destroyed wholesale.
ReplyDeleteMoving these collections would take a great deal of planning and preparation if they need to be moved quickly. Containers need to be built for them, transport planned for and places equipped to store vast amounts of fragile and priceless objects be located and prepared.
What a shame -- these Islamists care little for anyone else's beliefs, or, anyone else's artistic prowess.

ReplyDeleteAre Muslims really so insecure in their religious beliefs that they cannot stand to debate them without violence or threat of violence?
ReplyDeleteYes. They are okay with growing and selling opium/heroin. They are okay with slavery and pedophilia. They are okay with beating, mutilating, and killing women and children--especially little girls who color their nails, woman doctors, rape victims, and women who talk back to their husbands. They are okay with desecrating corpses.
But don't let them catch you with a hint of any other religion or you're dead. Or a political cartoon of which they disapprove. Especially if they can shoot you from hiding, stab you in the back, or some other craven move.
I have the utmost contempt for these extremists. I wish the rest of Islam would wake up and smell the coffee, so to speak. Their silence means they approve of the violence!

I visited this Buddha in 2001 and was deeply impressed. Now I'm shocked at its destruction. It's such a waste.

"Everything that arises, ceases".
It shows how intolerant, to say the least, the Islam religion is. The world would be so much safer and peaceful without this religion. The reason for the large number of Islam in Asia and Africa is a brutal forced conversion that happened in those region over the years. The pacifist, intelligent and indepth faith like Buddhist has absolutely no chance of this inferior, stupid religion. Sure I am intolerant of Islam.
