GRIM MILESTONE Reached Before Release of Patraeus Report

Just as the General David Patraeus gets ready to release his Iraq Report to Congress on 9-11, we have already heard about:

** The negative GAO Congressional report released by the media last week,
** The revised and still negative GAO Congressional report released by the media this week,
** The negative retired military officer report on Iraqi forces released by the media today
** The negative CRS, Congress' research and analysis arm, report released by the media today

And, now there is this:
US military losses in the Iraq War today passed the HALFWAY MARK of US military losses during the Clinton years.

Via Iraq Casualty Counts and Murdoc.

** It's been nearly four and a half years since the US "invaded" Iraq and today the US losses are half of what the US military lost during the Clinton years.

These other stats won't make any headlines this week either:
The US and Al Qaeda monthly losses in Iraq.

Fewer soldiers are killing themselves.

Via the CRS report to Congress.
More here.

This table is total garrbage. Just read the labelon the table: "Iraq War vs. Clinton years"

In other words, the table compared ONLY the deaths caused by combat during the Iraq war to ALL deaths, from any cause, in a 1.6 million member active and reserve military. So you are missing two things:

    1) A very similar number of military members died of non-combat related reasons during both the Bush and Clinton years. But way more members of the military (more than 3000) died of combat related reasons during the Bush years.

    2) The vast majority of military members who died during the Clinton years died of non-combat causes, as did a majority, (but not a vast majority) during the Bush years.

All the above info is in the CRS Report for Congress in Table 4. This is the report cited as the source for the chart. See the report for yourself, And think!

compare apples to apples. bush has over 8000 casualties over 6 years while Clinton had 7500 in 8 years, per the CRS report. Though 7500 is more than most people would think Clinton had. Also, 7 of the 8 years Clinton was president, suicide rates declined in the military. For most of Bush's years, they have gone up, per your cited CRS reports. President's don't operate in a vacuum and somethings carry over from their predecessors and what is already established in the military. There were more (albeit only 15) military suicides in 2006 than 2001 while there were almost 100 less suicides in 2000 than 1993.
