House Democrats passed legislation today to sue OPEC to bring down gas prices.
Brilliant-- A law suit against OPEC.
The Arab leaders ought to get a good belly laugh out of that.
Why is this not surprising?
Reuters reported:
The House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved legislation on Tuesday allowing the Justice Department to sue OPEC members for limiting oil supplies and working together to set crude prices, but the White House threatened to veto the measure.It should be noted: When 103 Republicans agree with Democrats that suing OPEC is the right way to tackle the energy crisis, you know Republicans have a problem.
The bill would subject OPEC oil producers, including Saudi Arabia, Iran and Venezuela, to the same antitrust laws that U.S. companies must follow.
The measure passed in a 324-84 vote (Roll Call Here), a big enough margin to override a presidential veto.
The legislation also creates a Justice Department task force to aggressively investigate gasoline price gouging and energy market manipulation.
"This bill guarantees that oil prices will reflect supply and demand economic rules, instead of wildly speculative and perhaps illegal activities," said Democratic Rep. Steve Kagen of Wisconsin, who sponsored the legislation.
The lawmaker said Americans "are at the mercy" of OPEC for how much they pay for gasoline, which this week hit a record average of $3.79 a gallon.
The White House opposes the bill, saying that targeting OPEC investment in the United States as a source for damage awards "would likely spur retaliatory action against American interests in those countries and lead to a reduction in oil available to U.S. refiners."
Meanwhile off the coast of Florida, China and Cuba are drilling for gas:
Democrats like to attack evil American oil companies and block them from drilling off our coasts. It doesn't seem to bother them when China starts drilling for oil in these same areas 50 miles from Key West.

ReplyDeleteI think it is about time Texas slapped a dollar per gallon export fee to all petroleum products produced here. Why should Texas petroleum go to fuel those pigs in Boston, Washington, New, York, Chicago, Philadelphia etc. when we could use it here to lower the prices here.
ReplyDeleteThink that is far fetched? You shouldn't. Those "states in the middle" as the Obama campaign is fond of calling them are getting pretty sick and tired of the morons on both coasts who have no concept of reality.
I can see those "Let the Yankee Bastards Freeze in the Dark" bumper stickers becoming popular again.
I'd sure like to see how they handled the jurisdiction. "OPEC" Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, is an association of sovereign countries, kinda like NATO.

the best way to lower oil is to make the futeres traders have to put up 50% or more on there traeds and it would drop back to $60 a barel

I see how people are cutting back even now and with each personal cut back every factory every small business feels it. All 3 potential presidents left in the race each one has no idea how to fix this. Sad to say but once we reach 5 + a gal its not a recession it will be a depression.
