Junk Science Outrage!... Polar Bears Put On Threatened List

Despite a massive boom in polar bear numbers, the US Department of the Interior put polar bears on the Threatened Species List today.

Here's a graphic from Kate:

Polar bear numbers in Canada have increased in 11 of 13 regions in recent years.

The decision today was made due to junk science projections--
Not because of actual numbers.

In reality, polar bear populations are booming, not declining.
There are 5 times as many polar bears today as there were 50 years ago:

A cull would make more sense.

Oh, and... Ice between Greenland and Canada is at its highest level in 15 years.

The US listed polar bears on the threatened species list today due to manmade global warming projections.

Hugh Hewitt offers analysis.
Powerline has more.

  1. Polar bears are endangered - at least in the United States; I am sure Canada will be more than happy to bring up the States quota for polar bears - gladly! Gee, I'm sure the States could probably use some grizzlies, black bears, and cougars to boot.

Technically they were put on the 'threatened' list NOT the endangered species list

Powerline and Hugh Hewitt examine the far reaching impacts of even this listing.

I am really pleased that they did not make the endangered list. That would have been a tragedy as the endangered protections are so unreasonable that the human cost of enforcing them vis a vis the polar bears would have damaged our economy for a long time.

It would have tied our hands when we need them to be unshackled to allow for market forces to respond to the energy problems we face.

What about Bipolar Bears? Are they half as rare or twice as likely to be enangered?

  9. I'd like one of the supporters of this measure explain to me what way, in principle, this is different from wanting Intelligent Design taught in Biology classes? "Science be damned!! It's my feelings/belief system that matters"?

  10. Color me stupid, but.... isn't that part of Alaska where the polar bear[s] roam located in ANWAR?

This is another example of why the Republican brand is so degraded. Let me point out the obvious. This absurd action, a cave-in to junk science propagated by the left, occurred in the administration of George W Bush, a Republican.

There is NO general outcry to "save the polar bear". NO political pressure to speak of. This is simply pure and simple capitulation to the left's agenda of controlling and destroying the economic engine of this great country -- furthered by a Republican Administration.

Until the party is prepared to fight back instead of float downstream you can bet we will lose power...

  12. "The Interior Department has scheduled a news conference for Wednesday to announce a decision on whether to list the polar bear as threatened and in need of protection under the Endangered Species Act." from link

Seems to me by this quote that if they determine the polar bear is threatened, it will be protected under the Endangered Species Act.

The bears are eating well in Canada, which is good news for Canadians as long as they aren't secretly eating Eskimos - French Canadians are fair game though.

Considering that about half of all "species" on the "endangered list" are volves, it'a about time that they found something with a "little sex appeal" to replace the bald eagle.

Oh .. did they ever get around to reauthorizing the "Endangered Species Act" when it ran out 2 or 3 years ago ? I think not.

  15. Polar Bear populations have been increasing steadily since the mid 1970's when hunting of bears (previously an unrestricted practice that led to dangerously low population levels)was banned. The current global population has been relatively stable for the last decade, not increasing as you suggest. Polar Bear populations in Alaska have been steadily losing body mass and declining in population over the last few years, its estimated that this population will be effectively extinct within 15 years.
Talk about 'junk science' - you should check your statistics before you make 'outraged' claims like these.

Thank you, governer. Government at all levels have run amok with junk science forecasts. My COUNTY is preparing to go to state legislators to get them to repeal an E-10 law(10% alcohol in auto gasoline to reduce oil consumption). It seems that adding 10% alcohol to fuel reduces mileage by about 8%. In other words, there is virtually no reduction in oil useage. I wish that more Oregon voters would ask what their legislators are doing in Salem. I wish, but am not hopeful.
