Iraqi photographer Wissam al-Okaili captured this miraculous picture from Sadr City.
Well, it wasn't the first time that Wissam al-Okali pulled off this stunt.
He also did it in November 2006.

ReplyDeleteFire burns where there is oxygen, that is on the outside and the edges of the book. Inside the book, assuming it is closed, there is very little oxygen. So this may be true, but its not a miracle in the sense that it is protrayed to be.
ReplyDeleteSetting a book, or tightly packed paper files, afire is not an easy thing. During WWII the Allies set out to nail a Gestapo HQ in, as I recall, Holland, where the target was their files on the Resistance. They had to work out many details in order to assure that they would burn, and it took a number of bombers to be sure of it. One blast (and any resulting flames on the interior of a vehicle) is unlikely to have much effect on a book except for its margin, any more than that it would have effect on a 2x4 beyond burning the edges.
