John Edwards: "We Can't Build Enough Prisons" -For Black Men (Video)

At the MTV/MySpace debate in Durham, New Hampshire.
John Edwards let this slip out during his not so "presidential dialogue":

Question: What would you do to help eliminate inner city kids from partaking in violence?"

John Edwards: That's a good question.

...I don't think their's a silver bullet to this. We start with the president of the United States saying to America, "We cannot build enough prisons to solve this problem."

And, the idea that we are going to just keep incarcerating and incarcerating, soon we're not going to have a young African-American male population in America. They're all going to be in prison or dead.
Unreal!

Here's the video (43 seconds):

HERE is the full clip.

Could you imagine a Republican saying something so false and racist?
...And, not have this on every wire service by now?

I pity the fool Republican who would ever say anything so insulting.
Where's the outrage???
Hat Tip Sean Hannity

HotAir has more on this gross display of racism.

switch to Independent or adopt Republican values.. anything, just get out of the Dems grasp, stop living off their promises & get a life of your own.. all they do is keep the bait fresh on the hook when fishing for your votes!!

  3. Your point about how a Republican would be portrayed after such a gaff is legitimate but I think he was simply trying to say that waiting until kids get involved in crime and imprisoning them is not the solution (implying that a nice big government funded program staffed by middle class bureaucrats designed to fix the problem is superior). He was not trying to say that blacks a naturally inclined to crime, it is just what the logic of his position assumes. So in fairness to Edwards he was not trying to say something racist, he just accidentally exposed the underlying racism in his belief system.

If one really wanted to solve the problem of inner city kids partaking of violence one might look at families who raised kids in the inner city who did not indulge in violence and who attained middle and upper class status (there are a lot of them). I am willing to bet that practices like maintaining strong, loving families where education achievement and personal development are seen as a priority are uncommonly high in the success stories than in the others. Whenever you hear someone give a speech where they describe a rags to riches story it always follows the general theme of "our family did not have a lot but we always knew we were loved and we were expected to strive for a better life."

Funny how that works. My story is similar. I could make a lot of excuses for myself but when I look back on my life I see opportunities - some I made the most of and some I wasted - but I do not see my obstacles as defining me. It is just how I was raised. There are people who were far better off than me growing up who feel that if only their parents had had more money or if they had gotten a scholarship or blah blah blah. What kids really need is character. You do not need money or a government program to get that.

nice post.. but i'd bet you anything that had a Republican stated what Edwards did.. not only would it be the scandal de jour, but you would think the gates of hell opened up..

I think he was trying to say most blacks will end up as criminals unless put on the dole. But then, what would you expect from a leftist. He also believes the brown people of Iraq aren't capable of forming a democracy.

He's a leftist = racist = bigot, notwithstanding the fact some of his best friends, or aquaintances, or people he's seen on the street, are black.

Really, I don't see what the big deal is about this. It's disturbing and certainly revealing, but not shocking.

Everyone knows that liberals don't consider anyone except college-educated whites to be in controll of their own lives. (And, for some, only liberal-arts educated whites with the appropriate political perspective.)

As for his actual point: how do we know we can't build enough prisons until we, you know, build some prisons?

    that's it in a nutshell..

    i agree..

at any rate, the big deal is the fact that it's not a big deal because a progressive said it..

however, it would be quite the opposite had a conservative said it..

it's the progressives (leftist liberals) blatant discrimination double standard tactic that has been hiding in plain sight for quite some time now..

  8. Ever notice how Drug Prohibition works like Alcohol Prohibition in financing criminals?

We get an added bonus these days.

    It finances terrorists.
