Buddhist Leader Dalai Lama Extends Support to Burmese Protesters... From Spain

He's certainly not the bravest Buddhist monk on the planet...

But it was nice of him to extend his words of encouragement:

I extend my support and solidarity with the recent peaceful movement for democracy in Burma. I fully support their call for freedom and democracy and take this opportunity to appeal to freedom-loving people all over the world to support such non-violent movements. Moreover, I wish to convey my sincere appreciation and admiration to the large number of fellow Buddhists monks for advocating democracy and freedom in Burma.

As a Buddhist monk, I am appealing to the members of the military regime who believe in Buddhism to act in accordance with the sacred dharma in the spirit of compassion and non-violence.

I pray for the success of this peaceful movement and the early release of fellow Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.

The due is older than dirt. What do you expect him to do?

  2. I am just glad he supports the protesters even if it is from afar. From what I have read of his opinion on the Iraq issue he often values the peace - even the vicious, murderous peace of a tyrant like Saddam - more than freedom and justice. He reminds me of the Buddhists who sat down and were peacefully slaughtered rather than defend their homes against the holy warriors. Their land is now part of the Muslim world. Buddhists in other parts of Asia reconciled their belief with the need to protect themselves, their communities and families. These lands are still predominantly Buddhist.

  3. I have never understood how the Dalai Llama could leave his people (both the monks and innocent civilians) to be slaughtered by the Chinese in Tibet. And then from the safety of India, he proclaimed that "Communism could be a useful thing" especially as a weapon against the evils of Western Capitalism.

Now the Dalai Lama is meeting with Bush. Why on earth would the Dalai Lama, who is widely acclaimed as a man of peace, lower himself by shaking hands with the world’s biggest warmonger, war criminal, the Butcher of Baghdad and Fallujah, George W. Bush? I just lost any shred of respect I had for the Dalai Lama.
