Have I missed any positions? Can he take on any more positions on this issue?
It takes quite a bit of chutzpah to cynically lurch to the middle with blatant reversals on positions and then claim you have been consistent the whole time.

Maliki does not have the power to ask for a US pullout on his own. He's running for re-election and like many politicians, he's going to advocate the popular, not particularly the prudent.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I am all for giving the Iraqis a timetable if they so desire. And I am also watching carefully the security agreement before the Iraqi parliament. They want to subject American troops to Iraqi law and jurisdiction.

This is to send a message to the region that the Iraqi military and the U.S. military are one, and this victory was achieved by both countries working together.
Maliki must prove to his countrymen that he's no puppet. This is a life-or-death proposition in that part of the world, so he's saying the things most Arabs want to hear, while the American and Iraqi militaries are signaling what has already happened: The U.S. and Iraq are now allies, and woe betide anybody who bothers Iraq from now on.
Even if Obama wins--and he won't--he won't withdraw all the troops. It's no longer an option, thank God.

Hindsight is 20/20. But what if McCain would've been President? I think he would've surged troops earlier and faster along with changes to defense leadership.
War is messy, uncontrollable with a brutal enemy murdering innocents all around with insurgencies like this. Its easy to second-guess. But we cannot doubt that McCain did not panic, nor did he pander while at war with troops on the ground and 25 million lives at stake.
Obama is a puppet created by a bunch of Marxist puppet Meisters and the actual public support of radical terrorist organizations and tyrants.
Axelrod, Ayers, the Communist New Party supported his political rise, along with Hamas supporters, Hezbollah, Iran, Fidel, Raul, Syria, and every other nutjob radical enemy of America that now supports him.

ReplyDeleteThe reason the GOP got spanked in 2006 was because they started acting like Democrats re: earmarks and lobbyists ... and the Dem leadership was able to hide itself behind some Blue Dogs in critical races, only to come out in full moonbat mode after the election. Disillusioned, the GOP base stayed home ... the Dems got some independents ... and now we have a Congress with SINGLE-DIGIT approval ratings to go with those $4+ gas prices.
Worse. Than. Bush.
It is the Big 0 who has been wrong all along ... for had we not taken the course advocated by both our generals and Sen. McCain, al-Maliki would probably not be in a position to assert himself this way ... or for that matter, be in any position of power at all ... that is, if he remained alive after we left, with AQI and al-Sadr both trying to grab his power.
And if you dig a little deeper, the timetable we are talking about here is NOT for total withdrawal from Iraq, anyway ... just a pullback from the cities to bases in the countryside.
Just like we've always planned ... for this is the basis of Sen. McCain's "100 Years" comment people like you love to misquote. We will support Iraq, the same way we have supported Germany, Japan, and South Korea.
Still, publishing a timetable is IMPRUDENT, for it gives the enemy a measure of your resolve.
But, let us let the political battle go on between the Coalition and Iraq ... for it is a political battle, something that is a vast improvement over the status quo circa 2002/2003. Actually, it is a sign of PROGRESS.
And something far beyond the simplistic -- not simple, simplistic -- analysis you have offered of American and Iraqi public opinion.

I would think that since the surge is indeed working this would comport well well BHO’s original position of immediately pulling out of Iraq - our presence is not needed. While I don't know what the phrase "unemployment is rinsing" means it is quite ironic that all the things he complains about have occurred, not coincidentally, at exactly the same time as the democrats took over the house and senate. Yet its the minority republicans fault.
